My exact sentiments. Despite its popularity, it still feels like a niche franchise, somehow. Like everyone knows about Mass Effect, but most haven't played Mass Effect, or get Mass Effect. And don't get me started on the ending, I could do freakin 20-hour stream on it; I'm somewhere in the middle: I see the value of it, I get what they were going for, but I also see some flaws, some of which the Extended Edition just made worse. As for the Paragon/Renegade system, it's sad to me that people (especially Andromeda fans) were quick to dismiss it as shallow, or meaningless, because it goes a long way towards fleshing out the roleplaying experience and encouraging replayability, like you said. I think it should've been iterated on, instead of discarded. Anyway, here's hoping Dragon Age 4 won't be a train wreck. The latest news is somewhat promising. P.S. Lemme know if your buddy ends up trying the series.

Game's partly a Captain Kirk power fantasy - it's part of the experience. Sadly, no game escapes the censorship brigade, nowadays. RIP, Ass Effect.

I might give The Expanse a try, then. Fun fact: one of the actresses, in that show, also voices one of the characters in Mass Effect.

Yes, I'm something of a scientist, myself. Congrats on starting your first playthrough! I'll just say this: if you feel like it drags, or like you're not terribly into it, step away, for a bit. Don't force it. I think small chunks are better than long binges, in this case. And this last bit is peculiar, and it's probably a 'me' thing, so feel free to ignore it: I warmly recommend you avoid making a custom face that looks like your face (the way most people do), for 2 reasons: 1. Nothing you make will look better than the default faces (I assume you're playing the remastered version); 2. I think inputting your own face gets in the way of connecting with Shepard, as a character. Even though you play *as* Shepard, you're not meant to *be* Shepard; you're just meant to direct them and develop his/her character. Ok, 'fussy mom' moment over. GL HF.

I'd wait for optimal hardware. At the end of the day, the whole point of the remaster is to make the game look better, so might as well get access to the best possible settings, graphics support etc. It's a purchase for the next 10-20 years, after all. Plus, might catch a discount on the game, in a few months.

Honestly, I would wait, were I in your shoes. Get the hardware first, then enjoy it the way it's meant to be. Might even get the game slightly discounted by then.

Well, it's like asking "Can I just watch season 3 of Game of Thrones, and understand the whole story?". Obviously not. But you could always, for instance, watch part 1 on Gamer's Little Playground or something, and play part 2. I've recommended that, in the past, because ME1 tends to be a bit clunky, compared to the other 2, but the Remaster seems to have fixed that, and put everything in one menu, so it's like one continuous game, instead of 3 parts.

Don't waste time and take your time. What I mean, by that, is don't waste too much time with custom character creation (no custom face will come close to the detail level of the default models), overthinking every line of dialog, in every single conversation, or forcing yourself to read the entire codex, to make sure you understand everything - you'll get it as you go along - so get some mileage in, early, to avoid 'intro fatigue' syndrome, or 'starting-for-the-5th-time-but-properly-this time' syndrome. But also take your time with it, as in, if you're not feeling it or it seems slow, at any point, just take a break; don't force it. If you want to be very efficient, it's most productive to pick a persuasion path (Paragon or Renegade) and more or less stick to it, although it's not a must and you'll have a good experience, regardless. I remember being thoroughly disappointed by the fact that there was only one (straight) romance option in Cyberpunk 2077; then I though of ME2 and realized that Bioware spoiled me, in that department, and in many others. So yeah, Mass Effect, Jade Empire, Neverwinter Nights - you don't see games like these anymore (with the possible exception of Divinity and Baldur's Gate 3 - need to try those).

Bioware's RPGs made the cut (note, ME trilogy (looking forward to 4, did not care for Andromeda), Dragon Age series, Jade Empire, SWKOTOR. Outside of that, The Witcher, Vampire TM Bloodlines, and Drakensaang. Also a Halo guy. But yeah, Bioware, when they are on their game...
