Been hiking and camping for 60 years. Got my sleep system down pretty good and it works for me. Like the synthetics because I can throw them in the washing machine and hang them to dry and they are ready to go. My sleep system is an R5 pad, bivy, 40-degree bag, 20-degree bag, ( together they are good for zero degrees F ), and a poncho liner. I like rectangular bags with side zippers. I usually zip them a 3rd of the way and use them as a quilt. No hood. I bunch the poncho liner around my head and use it as a hood and block any air from coming into the top of the bag. Take the bivy when hammock or tarp camping. When I can't find a place to hang the hammock I use the tarp as a shelter with the bivy. I am a side sleeper and like to have room to move around in my bag and curl up if I want to. Have a mummy bag I used on two trips brought it home and hung it on the wall where it has been for 20 years. Figure that goose is dead by now. Used this system for several years now and it has kept me dry and warm. In the winter I have room to put my boots in a dry bag and in the toe box so I don't have frozen boots in the morning.

Hi dan I have just purchased a nature hike large mummy sleeping bag with plenty of room to turn around in and side sleep it's 400g goose down fill cost me 120 pound looks big and puffs up good when laid out but compacts very small when in stuff sack with compression straps..it's rated at minus 4 for comfortable temperature and minus 14 for extreme..I will do a garden camp next weekend so I'm hoping it measures up👍

I have a Ray Mears branded Nanok sleeping bag that is marked as 3 season but is easily the warmest bag I have. I’ve used it in winter and been warm. Lots of room and centre zip, too. I don’t use a hammock and wouldn’t be going out if when it’s too cold, but am looking at a 4 season as I have rheumatoid arthritis, and find cold can affect my joints. So thanks for this comparison - very useful.

I prefer a wider bag as I'm a right fidget so the more room the better, most times when I'm out I don't zip my bags up to the top anyway as I ten to feel claustrophobic.

Those bags dwarf my Vango Starlite 250! I sleep quite warm so I'd need to be heading out somewhere really cold to need something that good. As I am not all that tall, 5'6", I don't really have problems with bags being too restricting, but I can definitely see how a center zip would be easier in a hammock.

Cheers for the review. I like the centre zip. I'd say its good for hammock and tent. Don't have to twist to the side trying to get zip up. Have you ever considered the down quilts? They seem to get good reviews especially for people who move a lot in their sleep.

Everyone seems to love a larger sleeping bag, but the benefit of that is much more than just having more room to wriggle. It’s not simply the insulation that keeps you warm it’s the trapped air inside the bag that has been heated up by your body, so actually the higher volume of air you can trap in, then the warmer you’ll be.

Centre zip for me. So much easier to get in and out of, no matter what you are sleeping on or in. They are no colder than an equivalent side zipped bag, due to the baffles. I don’t know why most other brands don’t offer a centre zip. It’s a pity that Outdoor Vitals don’t have a UK agent that stocks them. Ie No postage, duty and taxes. Ps I still wouldn’t slate the OEX. Not at that price.

@@pops6638 you would be looking at 20 % VAT on straight away and then some import tax and the courier surcharge to handle the VAT and import tax they take to give to the UK government so I work that about 55 quid on top for the bag Woodsman as got so at 250 quid.
