I have been bowling 4 step all my life and was recently at a 2-hour event that featured Parker Bone. He demonstrated 4 and 6 step and he made them both look easy, of course it is Parker Bone. But after that I was toying with going to 5 steps and wasn't pretty, I feel like it's foreign to me. So, thanks for this video, I will be sticking with 4 steps and keep doing the drills he taught us.

Thanks for the video. Interestingly, when I look at Danielle McEwan's approach, she seems to be doing more like 3 steps with the 1st step being a momentum step. So, it probably depends on how a particular person is "wired".

Thanks for saying both are okay. Taken to an absurd extreme, adding 20 steps, a twirl, and a jump may add momentum, but there is a point of diminishing returns where the complexity doesn’t justify the mental gymnastics required and sacrifices repeatability. Also, there is only so much approach space, and for me the extra step boxes me in too much.

For me, I think of it as an algebraic equation - whatever you do on the left, you do on the right. It is a matter of balance. With the four step, I have the same number of foot movements on the left as I do on the right and it helps me to be in a neutral position when I release the ball, and I get more control.

I actually used to be able to switch between 4, 5 or 6 step approaches (or 3 step if I need to get in front of the ball return) depending on the given situation. But I actually not stick to 6 steps, unless I need to get I front of the ball return... I went through a period of switching between 5 and 6 steps and something about 5 steps was just putting me off when getting the ball into my swing, so stuck to 6 steps and never looked back, a week later I finished 18th in the all-events of the European Youth Championships, that was in 2009 and I still have no reason to change

I've been bowling for several years and have always had this question you guys might be able to help me with. My slide foot always finishes a good one to two feet behind the foul line. As far as I can tell, it hasn't hindered my game (I have really long arms). Watching pros though, they always finish at the foul line. What are the advantages of finishing at the foul line? Is it simply just about eliminating as much time the ball spends on the lane or ensuring the ball has as much rotational energy at the break point?
@JoeyBagODonuts18
@JoeyBagODonuts18 4 жыл бұрын
If anything finishing a foot behind the line might make the ball grab the lane a bit sooner, but not by much.
@travishanson166
@travishanson166 2 жыл бұрын
I have this same problem. It does affect targeting. My ball lays down about 4-5 feet past the foul line, but if I dont slide and step far enough left to square up on my target line, I will either miss far left (brain steps in at the bottom of the swing) or I miss right, thinking I threw a good shot I move back right and then over hook. Perception of the lane changes significantly at the foul line vs 2 feet back. The arrows and boards become bigger, target lines easier to see, lane looks wider, etc. Today i worked on getting closer to the line. I think i cut the distance in half and i became more consistent.. i was even able to send it up the 5 board, out to the 1 board multiple times without fearing the ditch. Normally that shot would be impossible for me 2 ft back from the line. Hopefully in the next few weeks i will get to the line fully. It's weird too because it doesnt matter where i am on the approach, i can take 5 steps in front of the ball return and still end up 2 feet back. Lol

I three step, I can four step but I prefer three. There are no rules or limitations really apart from momentum would allow you to generate more power? I sometime four step for this reason just to get more momentum. I believe the best speed to be hitting the pocket at is from 16-18mph (don't quote me on that) so if you can still generate that speed without forcing it then you're fine ☺️ do whatever feels more comfortable. Try out the different approachs and see how you feel

Hey, how are you getting on? I currently still do a three step because I just prefer it and I've never seen anyone else do it 😂 so nice to meet you my fellow three stepper! What I done to learn the four step is I played a few practice games every week for maybe three weeks using the new approach 4/5 step and regardless of the painful scores I stuck to it until I could do it without hesitating or tripping over myself through over-thinking... I naturally bowl quite fast so slowing down was a struggle but it really helped to flow through the steps. I sometimes go to a four if I'm not getting the power I need and find myself going back down to a three after a few shots.

And then there's the method where you completely ignore your steps and just try to get rid of the ball before you hit the lane. Often accompanied by "I suck" and not "What am I doing wrong?" When you try to help, they make it seem like any pointers would ruin their fun of saying how much they suck. This was random, but it's a pet peeve of mine.
