Great tips! If you want to hide the adjustment layer to skip easily between clips, but keep the look on, you can enable the timeline in the color page, and Alt-click the track number. In Cullens case, track 2.

I always use groups and, doing my color management in nodes, I have the IDT in my pre clip, and all of my look + ODT on the post clip level. I usally group per camera, but I might try adjustement layers for "sub looks" if needed for some specific scenes that need more or different treatement than the overall look in place :)

2:05 I would like to correct you, Cullen - there is a way to sidestep look if it is placed on timeline level. It is possible to use keyframes to do just that. They also help to tune the strength of the look during certain scenes. It is a useful feature if you work with a short music video, for example.

You’re 100% right Fedor, but this is a technique I’d definitely advise against…too easy to make a mistake, or to have to redo if there’s any kind of edit or conform change

@@CullenKelly That is why it is only really useful with short form content. Another way to sidestep timeline-level adjustments is to enable Flat Pass for the clip. The con is that all color changes do not have any effect, but it can help with graphic clips here and there. I'm more of a group user myself, but there are options and it is great :)

Another way I found is to put the entire timeline as a clip into a new timeline, and add the graphics there. This is very easy and especially useful for things like KZfaq Intros, Logo Overlay and Outro.

When using the adjustment layer, I wouldn't move the clip you don't want to affect to another track (editors layer things a certain way for a good reason: organisation is paramount). Just create a new track at the top, put your adjustment layer in it, then cut a hole in the adjustment layer where you don't want it to apply.

Only downside about the adjustment clip method is that the color page will always default to the adjustment clip. So you'll be editing a clip, and when you advance to the next one, it will default to the adjustment clip in the bin. Hard to explain, but if you try this method often, it will be apparent.

Hey Cullen, don't really know where to write this but could you do a video on how to use/read the information about the curve of real film print (like you can find on the site of Kodak) for recreating them in resolve (in the hope of approaching something similar visually) please ?

Thanks for sharing these workflows! Been looking for an alternative to adjustment layers because when you're comparing clips in the split screen view, you won't see the effects of the adjustment layer on your clips which I find makes it hard to match shots.

Great video Cullen! I wonder if you run a few tests on where exactly the Adj Layer is placed in your Node Tree Path. Because if it's not after the Timeline level then it's a no Go as it will be applying the Look even before you create your IDT. That's my only worry with the Adjustment Layer, it would be great to know if you somehow checked that it is actually after Timeline level. Thanks!

Great Thank you for the impeccable tips when working with color at the macro level. I refreshed my memory of the method with a common node. I like the group method, with the possibility of isolating unsuitable frames by location.

This is great from a look perspective, but If only there was a way to pull in images and graphics without having them affected by the color managed workflow on the project level you taught me. I just wanted one image and now my project wont allow it. Do I need to do CST on every clip now instead?! I'd like to see a video on this topic.

One additional issue with the Adjustment Layer approach - some OFX effects do not work correctly on an Adjustment Layer - I wonder if things like Halation fall into this category? No idea. I do wonder if BMD could address this issue by design as each of these techniques appears to have a shortcoming. Having said that, I appreciate this video tutorial, Cullen, as it certainly arms us with a variety of approaches to suit our particular needs. Cheers.

I'm using Groups and CST IN/OUT at the timeline level - and the Voyager Pro Pac. I have Exposure, Ratio, Balance, Power Windows, followed by LUT's. The question is - does it make more sense to move your LUTs to the Post Clip tab or leave them on the clip level. (managing many camera inputs). thanks

Thanks for sharing. I wish Blackmagic would implement a image pipeline mechanism, like the one we all know from audio. In default we would have the same as we know now wirh pre-, clip , post- and timeline but we also could create more bus channels for more advanced stuff. This would be so much better than the adjustment clip workaround. @cullen, maybe you could suggest that to BMD. I would love such an enhancement 🥰
@GabrielPassarelliG
@GabrielPassarelliG 11 ай бұрын
We don't need more busses. But being able to bypass timeline grade would be awesome. You can do it with Color Management, why not Timeline Grade?
@franzmathauser
@franzmathauser 11 ай бұрын
@@GabrielPassarelliG i still think to have the flexibility to create additional branches for the color pipeline would be beneficial. They should be an advanced feature, like in Fairlight, if you need to have a more complex type of routing for audio.

I have one question. If working in a color managed workflow (input color space: Arri LOGC3, timeline color space: Davinci wg intermediate, output color space: Rec709 scene), is there a way to still use the internal film look luts? And if yes what should the setting of the cst node be?

In practice I often use many different looks, ex. for day and nigh, interiors and exteriors but even per scene(s). The way I do it is by making lots of groups: Say, Look 1 - Camera 1, Look 2 - Camera 1 etc. A bit fuzzy but not too much. The Adjustment layer and the keyframed look at timeline level are good solutions but they open you up to mistakes with last second edits, so in this sense they work against Resolves philosophy of flexibility. Personally I have been waiting for subgroups for ages... Last but not least, lets not downplay the time tested "just include the look in every node and in case of adjustment copy manually" method, that I believe most people end up using. Its not such a big trouble in practice.

With a fixed node tree and some smart filters, you can copy your adjustments to the relevant clips pretty quickly
@GabrielPassarelliG
@GabrielPassarelliG 11 ай бұрын
Subgroups may be unnecessary if you can mix Shared Nodes with your groups. Copy the relevant Shared Nodes to the Post Clip node trees from more specific groups and you can simply keep it organized. And also, you can implement things that are especific for that group. Also, if you keep your timeline free of any graphics and use timeline grading, you have another layer of macro adjustment in the timeline node tree. You can nest that timeline inside another and paste the timeline look as the clip look of that nested timeline. Many options, none of them very obvious, and most a little finnicky.

Couldn't you create a look with multiple Nodes, create a Compound Node and just make that Compound Node a Shared Node? Or will it then not update if you go and make changes inside the Compound Node?

Also, if you want to avoid moving clips from track to track, I guess another solution would be to simply cut the adjustement clip and trim it so it doesn't affect the unwanted clips :)
@hethfilms
@hethfilms 11 ай бұрын
True, but it defeats the purpose of having the show look on a single adjustment clip for easy modifications. Each time you cut you have another copy of the adjustment clip which then has to be treated separately when you want to change something in the show look.
