Hi, first of thanks so much for the video - so helpful! I know you've said in other comments that you were planning on making videos about how to solve mac gamma shift on export, are you still thinking of doing these?

I am very new to learning color management and this really saved months of figuring out what to do. I cant thank you enough Cullen for being so detailed and thorough in explaining things. The project settings explained initially really helped in seeing how LUTs can pop up an image. I was doing it wrong the whole time and wondering why LUTs are not having any impact as my project setting was not right.

This is my first time coming across Cullen. I got his name from another colorist on KZfaq. Cullen is phenomenal. He seems to understand how the basic colorist thinks and is able to translate how you should think before approaching a project rather than what to do. Does he have a masterclass?

I love seeing the progression of the darker videos to this very nicely lit and graded uploaded video. Not that it really mattered based on the content (which is incredible) but I just like that the "set" has evolved over time. Cheers.

Hai Cullen, appreciate all your videos. But maybe this question little bit noob question. What happen if the CST In and Out placed on Timeline not group? is it the same method? Are the CST In always in Group level, or we can do in Timeline level? Thanks Cullen.

So if Im understanding Cullen correctly, you should set your ISO to native and then change the lights with keys/fills? And second, increasing ISO in a camera introduces noise, whereas changing the shutter speed will not do so? I had no idea about that last point

I don't know if I've been using it wrong but when I do HSV Saturation on some footage it brings out a lot of noise. It doesn't do it all the time tho.

Thanks for the video! Only question is - why not use the "CST Out" node in the "Group Post-Clip" tab vs. the "Timeline" tab as shown in the video? Since using the "CST Out" on the entire timeline would then affect the whole project vs. affecting only the assigned group clips we need, right?

I apologize for being off topic, but looking at the wall behind Cullen; why is there so much banding on that? Even when I watch at 2160, there is a ton of banding. Is this a KZfaq issue? I dont think Ive ever seen that.

This is so weird! You've posted 4 videos in the last month and I haven't seen any of them pop up on my feed. I even have the "Personalized" alerts turned on for your channel. I was wondering the other day why I haven't seen any new material aside from your email on the "Sweetspot" LUT. Are you going to do a separate video on the Sweetspot lut? I've already uploaded it to one of my Reds but I don't understand how to use it with the SmallHD monitor=/ Also, thank you for always posting so much great information!!! I just re-subscribed to Lowepost for your new video on film looks!

How does this work if you have images and motion graphics in your timeline? Won't the input colour space effect the way those things look too?
@wraithdreams
@wraithdreams 5 күн бұрын
You don't need an out converter, just select the timeline in WG/intermediate color space and gamma, then set up the right CST for the clip so it appears correctly on your screen. You can start grading. The Out node mathematically is not necessary. You just select the desired color space TAG on the Delivery page.

Does it affect how the curves or the gamma or the HDR knobs affect the picture? or is it the same values both ways. I get all confused on this color stuff.

A little tip when changing project settings and you want to see the result without closing the settings panel (like in the situation in the video comparing P3 to 709) - hold option when you press save and the panel will stay instead of closing. Its a small thing I make use of a LOT. -Hook

Hello Cullen! thanks for all the very informative videos. I am trying to apply this CST workflow to footage shot Prores RAW that was then converted to cDNG. How should I be interpreting the cDNG files? Ultimately I would prefer to have my cDNG transcoded to DNxHR with logC3, and then work with that. However I can't seem to understand how I just get the cDNG files looking correct in the first place. cheers!

RGB Mixer in LAB w/ preserves luminance unchecked. It has an interesting way to forcing complementary colors in a subtle way. Making sure that each channel equals one. I usually try .3/.7 & .7/.3 combinations. Also, within the same LAB node, I do highlights and shadows on opposite directions. Shadows: -25 & Highlights: 25 for example. It creates color separation and helps me to balance in another node. I think it creates a stronger line across complementary colors on the vectorscope. I’ve also started using an Overlay node next to my HSV Sat node. I think it helps darken parts of the image in an pleasing way.

As I mentioned in the chat - a long time ago I kind of got burned doing that and the LAB node didn't transform to a lut - so best to test that and make sure that it does, just in case that comes up.

Hi, cullen. What makes your grades look crispy and like mirror, what I mean , it looks shinny, clean and you can reflect yourself through your grades which is amaizing. Is it because of color density? Or what's the secret behind? Thanks.

Cullen, just wondering why you placed the output CST for the Log-C group in the timeline instead of the one for end of the group? With different media types that are not using Log-C would that not adversely affect them?

Hi Cullen, just when i thought i had an OK workflow ,I find your stuff! Definitely next level. Question if I may, If following your workflow I wanted to use a REC 709 Lut and not a DWG Lut as you used, would I need to do a convert DWG to 709 infront of the 709 LUT ? thats what makes sense as the LUT expects rec 709? When I convert DWG to 709 The image changes significantly (no Lut Yet) I would have thought DWG to 709 wouldn't change the image as the overall output was 709 anyway? Or does putting a 709 lut in the project level of the clip on its own apply the lut after the 709 set output anyway? Cant get my head around this and before I buy your luts and change my workflow I want to understand how to use my rec 709 luts Thanks.
