1. Mucous Membrane
Check the color and general condition of the mucous membrane. If it's wet and pink, everything is fine. But if the mucous membrane is dry, red, dark red, blue, or white, something is off and you should see your vet right away.
2. Pulse
A normal canine heart rate is 120 beats per minute or two beats per second. To check the pulse, place two fingers on the left side of the chest, under the elbow, and apply gentle pressure to the ribs.
Alternatively, you can check the pulse by feeling the femoral artery in the thigh.
3. Body Temperature
The normal body temperature in dogs is between 100 and 102.5°F. The best way to measure a dog's temperature is with a digital rectal thermometer. Before inserting the thermometer, make sure to first lubricate it with oil, petroleum jelly, or a water-based medical lubricant.
4. Breathing
Count the number of times the chest rises and falls in a 10 second interval and multiply this number by 6. The regular respiratory rate is 10 to 35 breaths per minute.

My dog just died and I feel like I didn't take care of him well I feel so depressed and I can't get him off my head i just hope he's good now and happier I feel so bad I just didnt have enough money to take care of him I should of saved up and bought him all the things he needed he passed away yesterday and it just hurts so bad knowing that I can't pet him and see him anymore so plz guys take really good care of your dogs it doesn't feel good when you loose someone you love I feel so bad for not taking care of him more than what I did Rest in peace OSO

I request to everyone never own the dog if u can't give him time, if you can't fulfill his needs, if you can't give him good care. For the breathing part, I'd count for the whole minute. You can do that multiplying thing with heartbeat though, since it's a more regular thing, but breath can be quite irregular so you might come up with a number either too high or too low. Just go for the whole minute.

I'm here because I just lost my dog today... lost another one over a month ago, I gutted! The one is sick too but it's still eating and energitic. I never noticed they were sick until I noticed their stomachs were enlarged and their back bone a bit elevated. I called a vet and he said they had worms, so we dewormed them but to no avail, their stomachs were still protruded. The other one had developed a limp but we thought it was an injury because she loves to play with rocks.... The eyes were swollen and red, the one that died used to be playful but had just kind of become inactive. I thought it was depression from losing their other friend a month ago. My dogs are a mix between roties and German sherpard. 3 days ago the one that died today just became really weak and wasn't eating. So I called in the vet who came in the next day and he said they had biliary fever and that it causes kidney damage, water in the stomach, swollen legs. So he put a needle in its stomach to drain some water and release pressure and only a bit came out and it was yellowish in colour.... then he gave it 4 injections. Asked that we give it milk and buy livers for it to replenish it's red blood cells. It was so weak. Tried giving it milk yesterday and it threw it all up. Tried giving it today but it would not eat. Someone lifted it up today to move it.... and an hour later it was dead. It went and hid itself behind the house and died there😢. Maybe when they were lifting it up they crushed it's liver or something because it's death ws so sudden. I'm still in tears over this. I'm hoping the other one recovers because it too was injected. Was it really biliary fever. Was googling the symptoms and haven't come across where it talks about swollen stomach. I need closure, what's killing my dogs 😢😢😢

I have been reading alot of these comments. Many people on here are confused about why their dog just died. If you have a dog that is still alive but not eating, vomiting, constipated, has diarrhea, lethargic, urinating alot, has unusual growths on skin, etc, take your dog to the vet to get xrayed and blood work done. You will find out what the problem is. My 14 yr old mini schnauzer has high levels of liver enzymes and cancer. She is on medication. I know she probably wont make it to next summer but I am happy to make her as comfortable as possible before she passes. When I was a child, we didn't take our dogs to the vet. They never got shots or check ups. When they died, we just cried and buried them in the backyard. Now that I am an adult, I am more responsible than I was raised to be. If you can afford it, take your dog to the vet. If you can't afford it, rethink pet ownership.

My dog looks just like the one in the video and he’s been having serious ear problems. He has a yeast infection and his ears are red and smelly. Some days, unlike usual, he just sits in his crate sleeping and doesn’t come when we call him. Thank you, now I can know if he’s okay when he’s asleep like this and hope he gets better!

It is pity that vets generally don’t permit payment arrangements. Pet insurance is only a reimbursement plan for expenses already paid up front. More charitable/donor organizations require a great deal of time to get approval and receive funds. To get the funds, some money must already be spent since getting approved involves at least a prior vet visit and diagnosis and often a prognosis. It’s easy to say “take your dog to the vet.” Easier said than done.

You are absolutely right. Vets today don’t even want to give a diagnosis or offer the animal any treatment before they first take a scan and/or do a complete blood work (CBC). The vet I’ve gone to charges $250 for a scan and $250 for CBC. $75 office visit cost. So just to get a diagnosis can cost almost $600. Back when I was a child, we used to take our animals to the vet and get treatments for them without scans and bloodwork. But not so today. Vets expect you to pay with credit cards or get reimbursed through pet insurance. Sadly, many pets suffer who belong to people who do not have $500+ just to receive a diagnosis.

My dog is currently on the way to the hospital with some terrifying symptoms like difficulty breathing and barely able to walk. Man... What a terrible experience for anyone to go through. My love and empathy to anyone else in my shoes in the future. I wish dogs never had to die.

@@universalallrounder He was just fine it seemed like, and then he all of a sudden laid on the floor and started breathing really heavy, his legs were sprawled all over in a strange way, and when he got up he stumbled and walked like he was drunk. So we took him to the emergency vet at about 11pm last Wednesday thinking they would be able to fix whatever was wrong with just some pills maybe... Turns out he had some kind of liquid around his heart in a sack. Inoperable, and if they tried to operate he would most likely die anyway, and even if the surgery was a success it would come right back in a few days, weeks, or a month. So the merciful - albeit incredibly difficult - thing to do was to end his suffering. Put him out of his misery. He was a very handsome Maltese named Oscar with the spunkiest personality you can imagine. We called him the canine cartoon because of how many different unique noises he made, and how he always was so willing to play and do something to make you laugh. I'll never stop missing him or remembering him, but eventually the pain will lessen. It's been a week, so the worst of the grief is probably behind me. Moral of the story, appreciate every little moment you have with your loved ones - pets and people alike - you never know when the big guy upstairs will decide to call them home. Or to call you home even. Pardon the long message.

@@imover9999 I pray you and your family gather courage to mourn for your loss. It's very difficult to say goodbye to animals I know because I lost my dog one a half years ago. And now my new dog hasn't been eating too much for the past 4 days. And from yesterday she has repeated vomiting and diarrhea. I am really scared. As soon as morning arrives, I will take her to the vet .

I lost my lab due to heart attack . At first he was just coughing , we thought it's an infection took him to doctor. It was lil better but after some days it got worsen , he started coughing a lot , breathing problems wasn't even able to lay down because then it was impossible for him to breath , he was quitting eating drinking water we gave him glocuse through siringe, his stomach bloated the worst part , his treatment was getting started in few days , but in between he went to the balcony alone his tongue became blue and vomitted blood and my baby died . I wish doctor removed the water from his stomach because that was putting pressure on organs.

My neighbors dog likes to hang out in my garden. I too like petting her as she takes a nap. But I don't know what has happened to her today. She would wiggle her tail every time she saw me. But today she just lies there with no reaction. It just broke my heart... My neighbors are completely careless towards her. I tried to feed her some food but nothing seems to help. Other signs that something is wrong. Lack of usual energy. Tail stops wagging. their coat looses it's shine, poor appetite, inconsistent poop. Its great to know how to check vitals, but most dogs will show at least 2 outward signs of illness long before you or a vet checks their vitals.

My dog has thrown up at least 10 times throughout the whole day and has been slow and mopey. I think it’s because she ate something she shouldn’t have yesterday (it was Easter) I’m not sure but she is sleeping on my bed right now and I have a bucket if she throws up and I have a fan on her ❤️ I know she will be better and back to normal tomorrow

Better not to have any pet dogs coz it hurts u so much if it's sick or if its not as usual.. my pup is 10 months old bfr before 4 months it had parvo and I was very depressed tat time fortunately he recovers.. but often he become sick weak sometimes with unknown reasons and it hurts me alot .. if I leave him home n went out for days i always think of him and it reflects in my work..

My dog is breathing 90 in 1 minute and also her mouth is swollen (inside her mouth is white/grey)and it just happened rn. I’m not sure what’s wrong!!! But tomorrow I hope she gets better or else I’m gonna take her to the vet to get checked up.

My boys' respiratory rate is 62 breaths per minute, with lots of coughing..... his mucous membranes are dry, yet he ate lunch and drank water. His respirations have been high like this for at least 24 hours. His temp is 100.3 by rectal thermometer. I gave him doxycycline from the vet and some prednisone. He tested negative for heart worms, yet this condition persists, with shallow breathing and coughing. When I dose him with honey and cough drops, the cough subsides but the heavy breathing continues. He is an 11 year old Havanese/Coton.

He actually was diagnosed with enlarged heart and is now taking Vetmedin, Salic and another end twice a day.

I don't know how to respond because my dog is havanese bichon, and 3 years old having same problems. Also when i try to feel her heartbeat, in every 5 seconds beats slower or faster with stops, like she has some condition idk what to think. And she has 50 breaths per min. with shallow breathing, i can hear her air flows whining.. Also blood worm test negative, and she has a persistent cough when excited or if running a lot. Stupid vet said it's all normal, maybe i should change a vet..

I just lost my puppy a few minutes ago...atleast he knows how much I love him.. it's just heartbreaking that he was not going to sleep unless I caress him yesterday night..and a while ago before I run some errands he was able to move his body he can even run(he doesn't eat)(so he got thinner)..when I came back he just couldn't move his body ...and he can't open his mouth and it's dry .. My grandma told me to do something and when I went back and checked his eyes are just steady,I can't feel or see(through the stomach) his pulse..and I just held his tiny head up my arms and cried while holding him...it's just like-😫😭😭😭 My crazy 'uncle' must've done something

Please if anyone can read this and tell me there opinion on the matter I will be grateful. As my dogs life could be in danger. I went away from my dog for 4 days. My brother was taking care of her, she escaped for 24 hours before the found her. When I get back from vacations she is usually insane! She runs around wags her tail and rubs up against my leg. When I got back this time she just waged her tail as she was laying in her bed. I didn't think much of it, but she seemed to have a lot less energy and didn't want to play or go on walks. She has had terrible diarrhea currently but is eating and drinking fine. But she barley gets up anymore and seems a lot more calm. Sometimes dosent even flinch when I say "wanna go for a walk." When before she used to bark and jump up when I said that. What we think it may be is that she ate something really bad when she escaped for the 24 hours and it is still in her stomach. Please if someone can give me advice I don't want my dog to die. I love her too fucking much for that.

Bruh Lit this disease eats up ur dogs stomach they have zero energy and are calm bc they can barely move. Take her to the vet to get tested the survival rate is low so u have to go to a vet that has high survival rates.
