Have you priced a thru-axel lately? You will if you damage one.
@mrmcdermo
@mrmcdermo Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the use of the thru axle feels like a “break in case of emergency” type of hack Same with the double hex key hack. Probably a very easy way to round out a bolt and make a bad situation worse. But sometimes you do what you have to do

Holy shit, DO NOT use your axel as a cheater bar. You could bend it and you'd be hooped

@@rupedog I'd consider carrying a spare axel and using that as a cheater bar, but absolutely not the axel you need to get you home

also my first thought. if the wheels still roll you can always push it, but bend that axle and you're carrying the bike

The thing I don't understand is why would you ever depersatly need to remove your pedal on the side of a trail with a multitool? Tighten it if it comes loose sure but loosen it idk why? Just use the proper tools at home to take your pedals off.

The hack with the valve core is genius. Not really a hack, but you can replace most of the screws on the bike to have less different hex sizes. Then you can choose a simpler multi tool. I find that the hex keys on the fully equipped versions are often very short and for example you can‘t reach the screw that holds the shifter on Shimano.

I think you could probably use the chain tool as a valve core wrench

you forgot to mention that most of those multi tools come apart and you can mix and match to include only the ones you need for your particular bike. The disappointing part about this is that most of them include the same exact tools, so you really have to hunt for one that includes any tools that you don't have. also your limited on the size of it so if you need fewer tools than it comes with originally, you're stuck with having the pad out the extra space; or more tools than it has room for, you need to decide which ones not to bring or carry two. I like the concept of the bar-end style multi-tool. in theory that should let you have a longer handle, although none of the ones I've seen showcased ever do. you also have to consider balancing both bar ends if you're going to store things in them... especially if you're going to do any sui-no-handers

By the way, the logs of the Topeak PT30 chaintool are spaced perfectly to act as a presta valve core tool. It's not documented, but it actually works better than the dedicated presta tool on my Lezyne RAP II 25.

I take my multi tool out with me more so than my rucksack, as not like 20 years ago when you needed your backpack just to hold miscellaneous & loose individual tools as multi tools back then would only have a few hex keys built in so you would have to take your toolbox out with you which was a pain in the arse, great invention, although i would like one with a mini torque wrench on, that would be ace.
@rupedog

To peak do one with torque bits, or u can buy the bits separately... But very very expensive
@better.better
@better.better Жыл бұрын
yes! a torque wrench! been thinking about the set that Topeak sells. other than that I would want to add sizes that none of them include, because in my experience, every bike I've ever owned needs at least one or two hex or torx sizes that are never included on multi tool sets... then I can get rid of the stupid bottle opener and put a real tool in it's place (actually I use it to clear the mud/snow/and_once,_dogshit from my cleats). also I'd like to be able to replace the stupid chain breaker press-pin when it catches the edge of the inner plate and bends.

Hey! Yeah, multi-tools have come a long way in the last 20 years. They are way more compact and sleek. Topeak are one of our channel sponsors on GMBN Tech, and they make a ratchet tool which you can buy with small torque bits. It all can fit in your pocket in a minimalistic pouch. Hope this helps! www.topeak.com/global/en/product/1158-RATCHET-ROCKET-LITE-NTX+

How to break a thru axle to remove a pedal in the forest. Whaaat😂
@evanshireman5644
@evanshireman5644 Жыл бұрын
A pedal should not be torqued tight enough to break or bend your axle if you’re only using it as a leverage device.
@gmbntech
@gmbntech Жыл бұрын
Hey! It really depends on how much torque you need to use. We wouldn't suggest hanging off the axle to try and get your pedals loose, but it's a handy hack you can try when you need a little bit more torque. 👍

If your multi tool doesn’t have an 8mm, or you would simply need a longer one, just add a regular or longer 8mm to the kit. If the added weight of one Allen key is going to make that big of a difference in your ride, you’re in a race and your crew will be carrying the tools and spares 🤦🏻
