I just got awarded 50% for sleep apnea. because of PTSD. A sleep study was performed and I had 10 apneas per hour with 3 obstructive events. I'm not obese. The CPAP machine is working great I'm still getting used to it though. The weird headcrab and HR Giger dreams are strange though.

I have done the research and got to 90% with in the first 4 years, on my own. This last 10% has been killin me. I have had no way to prove, until talking to my doc from afghanistan. After over 42 years since my discharge in 1979 I finally read my military medical records and found that I had untreated hypertension. I linked ED WITH deformity with lack of erectile power and sleep apnea secondary to hypertension and was awarded within a month. I was denied for my knee injuries multiple times for 38 years before I was awarded 1O% but with sleep apnea I had hundreds of private medical records and sleep studies. I was awarded 50% disability for OSA.

Any remaining benefits my husband had have been taken away. The Federal Government States he doesn't qualify for any of the benefits he worked for. However, he has a lovely (sarcasm) letter that has the written intent to take my husband's life.. It say's... Remarks: Date of death/Source Of Notification/Updated date and time.. Pretty straight forward as to intent of his demise. We've been physically blocked by 5 police officers from entering a Surgeons Office my husband had an appointment with in the United States. We've been held at gun point & threatened to be shot by police in the United States and in the same area where an Australian citizen was murdered by police in the United States. Those two incidents occurred in less than one month just in the past year. Now we don't even have $50 to our name. We were in a Federal Office & asked what were supposed to do. A...hole suggestion was that maybe the state could help.!!! The State?¿? We have documents that States VICTIM ASSISTANCE TREASURY DEPARTMENT!!! I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, after I got out of the military. Tried numerous times to get compensation for it and was denied every time. My local military advisor told me not to file again, because they could take money away from me. I'm 60 percent service connected disability, without the sleep apnea. I would like to get my sleep apnea rated even though I didn't claim it while I was in the service, Thank you.

Served in the Army from 1978 to 1986; developed asthma in mid 1980s and just got out of the Army at the end of that hitch. Upon leaving service I got 10% (and later 30%) VA Disab for asthma and have been continually treated since. I later developed bad sleep asthma (diagnosed and tested by VA) and have been using a VA-issued Bi-Pap machine for several years. I have had MULTIPLE sleep studies (all VA). I was told that in my case, sleep apnea is considered secondary to my service-connected asthma and so I put in a claim for it. DENIED. Appealed, then again denied. I just knew my case was a slam-dunk, but the board said it was not service related. I am considering taking another run at it...

I got a sleep study while in the Army and was diagnosed with sleep apnea. The doctor stated in my notes that the likely reason was obesity. I looked at my claim which was prepared by a rep before I even ETS'd and she literally didnt even try to make a case for me. She just put "training" in every column that read "reason for injury." So I knew I wouldn't get anything for sleep apnea...but then BOOM! Got my results and I got 50%. Not sure why? Maybe it's because my neck is so thin. Its 16 inches and it says my neck size on my sleep study. Either way I'm not questioning fate. Ironic that the thing that made passing tape so hard for me is what most likely helped me get a sleep apnea claim (thin neck). On a side note, I was expecting to get a percent for hypertension as I have been measured with a bottom number larger than 110 (bottom number) multiple times in my record. Yet once on medication it came down. Do they go by your current medicated result or your past results before the medication? I got 0%

My civilian primary care physician had a home sleep study done on me because I couldn't sleep for more than 3 or 4 hours per night. The results showed I had stopped breathing for 10 seconds or longer for an average of 46 times per hour during the study. Then I was sent to a hospital for a much more comprehensive overnight sleep study. It showed nearly the same results, but in greater detail. I've now been wearing a CPAP for 18 months, and still struggling with the CPAP mask and machine. It is somewhat better now than at the beginning, but I still have far too many problems sleeping with the CPAP mask and machine. I have 60% disability for Ischemic heart disease (agent orange), 30% for hearing loss (loading guns), and 10% for tinnitus. It sounds like my service connected heart disease probably is causing my sleep apnea.

For many years I had sleeping problems including insomnia, depression, anxiety and tinnitus. My wife got really concern and told me that stated that I was struggling at night when I went to bed. I had a bad episode one night and she took me to see my doctor. She explain what was going on during my sleep with the dry mouth, morning headaches, anxiety attacks, insomnia and the gasping for air. My doctor diagnose me with the possibility of having Sleep Apnea. He gave me a referral for a sleep study at a sleep study clinic. I did my first sleep study and I was diagnose with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. I was call back to the sleep study clinic because they believed that I had other problem. I had to take an EKO on my heart, did the second sleep study and I was diagnose with complex sleep apnea. I provided the VA with the diagnose from my doctor, 2 nexus letters, both sleep studies and the request for a BIPAP machine that must use for the rest of my life. I also sent new evidence of two studies that stated that Tinnitus does cause sleep apnea. My claim was denied because my 2 nexus letters were not good enough. I went back to my doctor and ask him he could write a nexus letter for me. He did and I am waiting on results. This process has sent my never to the 10th power. It seems to me that veterans must die from sleep apnea for them to get the message.

I need help on my sleep apnea claim....I filed it in 2013 and all I am told is that they have not scheduled a hearing yet. I was working at a VA Hospital as a employee, I had my sleep study done there....I was diagnosed as having severe sleep apnea...I was issued and have been using my CPAP machine since then. I have answered every question that they have asked me....each time I tell them what is needed for them to approve my claim, but they still are stalling...they ask, why did I wait until now to complain about sleep apnea and not when I was in the Navy...I explained to them that I had the same severe sleeping and breathing problems then, but in 1986 to 1992 no one know that it was sleep apnea. You could not just go to sick call and say I am having trouble sleeping, or snoring.

I did 2 tours in Iraq, Feb-Aug 03 when the Iraq invasion kicked off, then again May 04-Mar 05. I was discharged for PTSD and rated at 30%. I had other disabilities totaling 80% disability for compensation. I told my counselors I couldn't sleep, snored, twitched, kicked, etc and they diagnosed it as PTSD symptoms. I got out in Feb 07. Last year I finally got sent in for a Sleep Study, twice actually. I was diagnosed with Severe Sleep Apnea and put on a Bi-Pap, not a C-Pap. Even with my machine I don't rest very well. I'm late for work...a LOT. I KNOW that I have PTSD and I KNOW my Sleep Apnea was related to military service (Army). My pulmonologist is a little Arab guy. Upon first visit he said he thinks I developed Sleep Apnea because I'm obese. I gained some weight since Active Duty, sure...about 30lbs. However, when I was still enlisted I was truly in the best physical shape of my life. I'm 5' 11.5" and 220lbs. Active duty I was 192. I was scoring above 290 out of 300 consistently on my APFT's. I was actually tasked to be the Remedial Fitness instructor because of my performance. So this little Arab guy labels me as obese and automatically assumes that's the reason for my Sleep Apnea?!?! I need help. I didn't ride sick call. I haven't even claimed tinnitus and I served in Field Artillery for 4 years of my military service! I'm afraid for my job, between me being late and my PTSD attitude. I don't have lawyer money. I'm sorry to have written my life history. Thank you for your time.

damnedtexan1976 MLRS, Camp Rhino, Kuwait side by any chance? Anyway, 30lbs extra may lead to an obstructed upper airway but not necessarily. Severe sleep apnea is a big deal.The only way to find out is to lose the weight. However, sleep apnea is also common in regular and under weight people. I've been on CPAP for 10 yrs and always within my weight range. I wasnt given a reason for my apnea but can feel my soft tissue in the back of my throat sag and have to consciously open it up when awake. Interesting story, I went on a trip through a Vet program with 10 other random veterans from different states a few years ago. It turned out that 9 of us had been diagnosed with apnea . That makes me wonder about all the random shots I received while in service. Anyway, did your VA Dr. mention anything to you about having central sleep apnea (especially with you having PTSD)? If you're on BiPAP there's a possibility you might have it. CPAP does not help central apnea, but BiPAP MAY, not saying that it will. If you're still tired either the pressure is inadequate (too high or too low) or its not serving you well because of a central apnea component (meaning neurological, considering you have PTSD). If central apnea is the issue the next step up from BiPAP is an ASV. Same size machine just handles the breathing through different algorithms. The point for using the device is to help us begin the day rested and bring our life expectancy to normal. I hope you can work it out with your doc. Keep us updated

It used to be 3 months of continuous duty but I believe it is now 2 months. After that you will be rated 100%. Do not forget to apply for ‘Housebound, A&A’ for residuals after treatment. I received a 100% P&T but the VA deferred my sleep apnea, it looks like, because my sleep study was 2 years ago. I got a permanent profile about 2 years before I came off of active duty. My VSO told me not to appeal because I received 100%. I just received my decision letter a week ago and I still see the "pending" in my eBenefits to add documents. Is it worth it to get a new sleep study to get this service-connected? All of my time is active. I did a BDD claim before I retired. I use my CPAP every night and it does help. I am not at all overweight and I still have the issues. I had to get on BP meds because it was so high. I read the connections to cardiac and neurological issues like dementia and Alzheimers.

Hello I've been fighting with the VA to get diagnosed with sleep apnea for the last 3 to 4 years. It's such a depressing thing to do when fighting with the VA. I'm diagnosed with PTSD, bad knees, ankles, and so on. So with ptsd I go through these spells of eating and I fell like a bottomless pit. With that I also can't sleep, whether its do to nightmares, night sweats, or just insomnia. I'm You sleeping most days 4 hours and I have these migraine headaches for half of the day. You mentioned sleep apnea is correlated to PTSD, so they continue to fight with me on my sleep apnea and insomnia. I'm so tired, agitated, irritatable, and everything after that. I'm loke a ticking time bomb. How can I get the VA to rate me for my issue and can you represent me. It's frustrating and it's affecting my family life and social life.

I have these chills and I have had to quit three jobs for sleep deprivation. I got Graves Disease in the military and my heart would hurt occasionally then but nothing was found. This week I have an echocardiogram scheduled. I am so mad because they could have corrected this before I got to this point with a device. A cpap or something like that. God damn I am doing research on it as I am watching this. I weight 160 lbs I am 5'6'' no offense to anyone but I am not fat, very well in shape and currently I have not been sleeping, I am married and I truly don't care for that anymore, I never stop thinking of the days from training. Down to the days where I was on missions outside the wire I can't focus on work most of the time from thinking and trying to relate regular life to different jobs as I do them 24/7 and this goes for everything, I don't relate to my family they don't even speak to me. My brother who has been behind bars most of "his" life said that I was out of my mind and told my mother to cut me off.... WTF is that? Most of my military buddies said I needed to talk to someone and I needed counseling, I think and know all they are probably going to just explain is how to UN-fuck myself without knowing an inch of what the hell is swimming around in my dome you know! . Am I wrong? I served in Panjwai, Afghanistan 2012 OEF on a combat deployment I am an Infantrymen from the US Army and very proud and honored to have served among the side of the kind of guys the US would probably never know nothing about besides what the media thinks they know. I went to the VA and was told that they were just going to put down that I was just there considering Afghanistan. My fucking back aches like crazy every fucking day. I really was not taken seriously is there anywhere I can go to get real help? As I type this I have not slept for two freaking days truly if god exists he is a witness. And this is off and on, through out the year. Or how about those times where everything seems like its going 1000 MPH and have to take the deepest breaths possible to where it feels like you can't breath until everything slows back down. Or am I the only one experiencing this? Again, am I wrong? I'm not trying to nagg or boast but I reaching out to see who knows where I can go for real help and someone that takes me seriously you know. And me explain somewhat of what I have to go through so someone that got help and knows who can help to let me know. Preferably another Blue Cord brother that understands and works in the VA you know. Thank you to who understand and helps me out!

MM12312 Get to a doctor fast. Preferable a VA doctor but any doctor will do. Get your conditions documented and explain when you believe they started. Don't wait or ignore it bcuz delay in reporting them will hurt your chances of service connection.

Great info. I just submitted my sleep apnea claim due to deviated septum or obstructed airway.. but after seeing your video I realized I could have connected my 70% PTSD and my Back 40% along with knee and 30 plus lbs weight gain since leaving the military in 2012 and cant work out like before to my sleep apnea. my question is if I have to appeal does it hurt me that I didn't make the connection the first time. or do you think the VA will make the connection for me?

I know this extra late....but I'm just now watching this video you commented on. you can service connect injury or physical ailment to sleep apnea. if you've suffered weight gain due to the inability to be as active prior to the onset of your current service connected item, SA may be granted as secondary. I'm sure you've gotten your answer by now, best wishes nonetheless.

If you had your sleep study while active duty and were prescribed a CPAP then is that automatically considered service connected?
@TicklerDude
@TicklerDude 8 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea while on active duty (before retirement). It was determined to be service connected. I got a CPAP machine after visiting a sleep disorders clinic. I just received my VA compensation letter and was told that I will receive a 0% rating because the VA claims examiner determined that the CPAP machine was optional and not a "required" treatment. Now I have to go back to the sleep clinic to get them to document that the CPAP is a requirement, then I have to go through the VA appeals process. What a pain in the ass!

AK 49er .CPAP IS FOR LIFE if you don't want to develop issues that result DIRECTLY FROM untreated sleep apnea such as cardiac, pulmonary, blood, mood, and metabolic etc. That's without mentioning how all those problems will affect you financially and in your relationships. I would resubmit the claim.

Orlando Rivas I had another sleep study done and the doctor wrote a letter explaining that my sleep apnea REQUIRED the use of a CPAP machine. After resubmitting documents and requesting the VA to perform a "reconsideration" of the original ruling, I was amazed that the VA ruled in my favor. I was given retroactive/backpay and my new overall VA rating is now at 70%. My specific VA compensation experience is a good news story that persistence sometimes pays off.
