Is there a way to find a good dentist-gentle and pleasant?

When I went to the dentist after YEARS of not going and really bad oral hygiene, had to go due to a bad cavity, I was terrified. When I went in I said I had really bad anxiety and I was so scared but knew I needed help. They were absolutely flipping amazing. I ended up having a lot of cavities and my second appointment to fill one I had an anxiety attack. They gave me time, coached me through it, saying I will be better in a minute once the numbing solution settles, since I was terrified the numbing solution hiked my anxiety, after a minute I felt completely fine and they even gave me an adorable shark stress toy. They had no clue I love sharks and it helped immensely. I am more relaxed when my hygienist is chatting during my teeth cleaning, helps me feel like it’s just a regular normal thing she’s doing and it’s not a big deal, also helps me feel even more taken care of

My dental anxiety is a result of not having the best experiences early on as a kid, it was traumatizing to say the least. So anytime I would think about having to go to the dentist it would be a nerveracking experience. But I think it all boils down to having the right dentist that works best for you. Now that I have I actually feel much better when going to the dentist.

I have the same exact problem. A dentist yelled at me when I was a kid and made me point to foods I eat on a food pyramid. Then he took my mom and me into his office and yelled at her. I’ve been scared of the dentist ever since. The last time I had a cleaning I got the laughing gas which made things so much better. These days I am scared to go because I don’t have dental insurance and I definitely don’t have dentist money 😂

Honestly I think it goes both ways. I had a mean, rude, aggressive dentist growing up that was rough on any dental care I did. I would hold back tears so I wouldn't get it anymore harsh treatments. Then as a teenager, I met a great dentist that was calm, attentive, and she was very knowledgeable. I loved getting my teeth worked on by her. As an adult, I met another awesome dentist. She was a mom just like me and she made me feel comfortable every time I went. So I didn't discriminate against all dentist. I knew I needed work done on my teeth and just put faith in whoever I went too. Just like rude patients dentist have to face, they will also face the genuine ones with concerns. So take a chance on your dentist and don't be afraid to ask questions on gaining healthy tips for a healthier smile. They want to help 😊

I have a very similar experience as you. For several years of my childhood, I had a dentist who was also aggressive and rough and didn’t actually care that I was in pain. It was like my whole mouth was numb to the point that I couldn’t swallow my own saliva, and yet I felt all the pain the drill would give me had I not been numb. I always cried even at cleanings, I was petrified and always in pain. Then when I was older I went to a new dentist after I moved and my anxiety has slowly gotten better, because I finally have a dentist that makes me feel comfortable and safe and is there to get me out of pain, not put me in it. He has a more modern approach and always stops if he sees I’m in pain or discomfort. Even the injection is totally painless, because he shakes my cheek as a distraction. Even the assistants make me feel amazing. One assistant in particular always makes genuine conversation and it takes my mind off of my worries. The dentist you have can make all the difference and it’s extremely important that the dentist and their assistants make you feel safe, comfortable and cared for. My anxiety isn’t totally gone, I’m kind of a hypochondriac when it comes to my teeth, so whenever something feels slightly off, I freak out. But it’s not going to go away overnight, it will probably still linger. But my dentist has made all the difference and procedures that were once so scary and painful are now such a breeze.

It is, indeed, less scary when you know exactly what's going on in your mouth. I have been battling dental anxiety ever since I was a child, mostly because of the horror stories I've heard from other people sharing their bad experiences at the dentist. I sometimes even have dental nightmares because of that. But I've been following your channel for quite some time now, and all the information you've been sharing here has helped me a lot. Not only that I've learned a lot of stuff about teeth but also these videos have given me a much better understanding of all the dental procedures, which does help relieve some of this anxiety. And in general it's interesting to watch and learn about what's happening "on the other side of the chair". So thank you so much for everything you're doing, Whitney, and keep up the amazing work!

I do go into my own world while my teeth are worked on, but I'm not necessarily meditating. Meditation requires sitting upright and focusing on breath, and the chair does get me in an unfocused state

My dentist's office had a few books that were catered to relaxation and anxiety, which I thought was cool. One was a mindfulness meditation book called "30 Days to Reduce Anxiety" by Harper Daniels, which I read while waiting and there was nice music playing in the office. It helped and made me realize it's important to probably practice meditation before stressful situations, like going to the dentist.

I wish I saw this video when I was 11 years old back in the early 90s I had my first dentist appointment at age 12 my parents waited so long because I had high anxiety issues and I struggle with nausea caused by trauma but my parents were very abusive and neglectful, I was a very difficult patient my first time but not because I was being a bad kid but because I kept crying and I couldn't sit still I kept trembling and shaking and crying I couldn't do x-rays the staff was pretty mean also but what made it worse they were mean to me in front of my dad and he didn't care He was mad at me because I was embarrassing him for crying , And then when I tried to apologize to him because I wasn't able to cooperate he physically pushed me away ,, so because of my high anxiety I didn't go to the dentist for many years I also needed braces but my parents couldn't afford them and they said that's it's not their problem that I should deal my crooked teeth when I'm an adult Well as an adult I couldn't afford braces either so I have very crooked teeth and gum disease but last year I knew that I needed to get over my fear of the dentist so I started going I managed to get over my fear and gagging problem with doing x-rays Because the dentist I found the staff is very nice and cooperative and they take time and they're patient with me Cutting my parents out of my life has also helped but this video would have helped me a lot if I was to watch it when I was a kid but KZfaq wasn't around back then

@@Teal_Blastoise thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️ yes definitely finding the right dentist who is gentle and patient helps a lot but I had to work on myself as well to get over the fear the high anxiety and the gagging problem , it took so many years that's what I regret so many years I missed out on getting good dental maintenance did I could have prevented teeth problems , I always took good care of my teeth are brushed and flossed everyday I eat healthy but I used to brush so aggressively and floss very harsh that also led to my receding gums This dentist taught me how to properly floss and brush to not irritate my gum, I used to brush and floss so aggressively because I thought since I'm not going to the dentist I have to brush my teeth very hard to clean them as best I can but I didn't know I was only doing more harm than good but it's going to take time for my gums to feel a little better and I have to keep up with my periodontal cleaning every 3 months 🙏🏻

All of this! As a dental hugienist i say there is no judgement in my chair. My goal is to help you get healthy teeth and gums. 🩷 and that is done by both of us working together. I am going to tell you exactly what is going on in your mouth, areas to floss more, brush more, things to improve on. But i also realize that not everyone is equipped or ready to work on things to improve their health. So we can take as many baby steps as it takes to do that improving. 🩷 Also. For my anxiety patients i can empathize. 😐 i have a highly irrational fear of bugs, especially ones that fly and sting. Like...a wasp flies at my face and i have a full blown meltdown with a panic attack. I usually share the story of when one was on my car door in the petco parking lot....and i was running and screaming through the lot, hysterically crying GO AWAY GO AWAY GO AWAY while people were walking by me. At one point i went full fetal on the ground 🫠 Fear makes you do stupid irrational things....and i joke my fear is rational but my response is not. And when that fight or flight kicks in...you best know im not acting rational, im likely just straight to tears. Which....for those patients i try to give them as much control as i can. I have a stress ball in my room they can squeeze, they are allowed to hold my suction and use it as often as they need to. And then share a bug story or two of my hysterics. 😂😅 i feel like sharing my own irrational reactions to something that doesnt warrant the reaction puts them at ease because we get it. Its mortifying and we do not enjoy the fear or behavior that comes from the fear. And there is minimal control over those fearful reactions. And i think saying i get it in a truly true way helps immensely. And if you dont have an irrational response to something you really dont get it. When i tell the stories it gets laughs and you can feel the tension ease. But in those moments for me they are truly horrific and im certain im going to die. Am i? No. No im not. But the sheer panic and anxiety paired with some of the worst panic attacks ive ever had say other wise. And i think that is something we can both relate to. 🩷😊

Hey Whitney. I have been to my dentist's office, and I had wonderful experiences when i went in. The dental hygienists were lovely and easy to talk with. They couldn't judge me because I have great nice teeth from what they both told me. Not to mention, a wonderful personality. One hygienist even told me mine were better than her husbands lol. We even got to talk about teeth and other stuff for some time. I plan to stay at this office to just talk with them and have them adore my fresh mouth. If they did judge me, should I make them take me out to dinner to forgive? I even gave them a magazine with me on the cover.

Unfortunately I've had such a bad gag reflex,it caused me to stay away from the dentist for years. I've spent 12,000 in Texas undergoing surgery for almost a new set of brand new top teeth. I was under anesthesia for 6 hours. From 6am to noon. The very fronts are temporary and I wish I could've gotten it done in one visit since I was out for 6 hours. Unfortunately I had a dentist judge me and tell me that since I have too much of a gag reflex, he can't see me anymore and not to come back. He told me that he can't see my kind. Not sure exactly what he meant by that. But I had to learn to forgive and I've been living in pain for a very long time.

So I went to the dentist last week after having not gone for well over 10 years. I thought I was going to be judged, and have a mouth full of cavities, and need tons of work. Thankfully, I only have essentially 1 cavity in need of a refilling, but I need a root canal done on a tooth that lost a filling. I'm definitely nervous about that, as being completely blind makes going to the general dentist nerveracking enough. Now, I have to add a second clinic into the mix, on top of a procedure that has a reputation for being painful.

Lots of pain afterwards. They gave me a prescription for Tylenol . Should have gotten it filled.

My childhood dentist definitely was judging me, and maybe even hated me. The only time he was friendly to me was when I lost my first two teeth (they were pulled in his office due to the adult teeth pushing the baby teeth out). Every other time I can remember he would yell at me for not brushing often enough, or correctly. He made me sit on my hands and would yank on my lips (in his defense I was very tight lipped when I was younger). He branded his practice as a "family dentist," but in my opinion he really shouldn't have seen children. It wasn't until I saw another dentist for the first time after I got married that I realized that going to the dentist doesn't have to be so scary. I still have a lot of trauma and probably even a full fledged phobia of the dentist, but my current dentist and his hygienists are awesome. They're very accommodating of my fears. I'm happy to say that I've almost finished working through the bulk of the trauma too. I'll probably never LOVE going to the dentist, but I've come a long way. I'm also super fortunate that my teeth are pretty healthy.
