While traveling in India we noticed 4 variations of the Indian head nod. By the end of the trip we were also head nodding!

I love the head bobble ❤ I was a nanny for an Indian family. Their grandparents came to visit and the baby was almost a year old and she started to bobble her head like her grandpa. It was the cutest thing I've ever seen. The older boy, he was 3, he would walk with his hands clasped behind his back like his grandma. It just tickled me to see them picking up on what the grown ups did ❤❤

I was a statistics tutor here in America for years, and it took me an embarassingly long time to realize that my Indian students were following what I was saying, because I thought they were shaking their head "no" at me for so long. With my nonconfrontational tutoring style, this would result in me rephrasing things several times, then the student would eventually be like" yes, I get it." Lol!

WHEN A STREET VENDOR repaired the shoes of my friend, he made a “gesture payment” as he didn’t know what to pay. The “gesture payment” was above average for the street vendor and he was very pleased and shook his head. My inexperienced friend thought he hadn’t paid enough, and the cycle of payments and head nods continued, until someone explained to my friend the local custom of the head nod 🙂‍↕️ 🤣

@@har132 It’s true! Another funny thing happened a few days ago. I’m Australian living in the Philippines. I was saying at a hotel in Sorsogon. The hotel is called “Dineros Hotel”. The way I remembered it was “Robert DeNero”. Anyhow, after dinner I needed to get a local tricycle back to my hotel, so I said, “Deniros Hotel”. The guy misunderstood me and pointed to a hotel across the road and said, “De nearest hotel is dat one, sir … and dat other one is near too” pointing to another hotel.

My Country Sri Lanka is just 12km away from India (but it is an Island) but the nodding is different from India, here we wave two side to say No, and we nod up to down to say yes, and down to up is to say what do you prefer? (what do you want?) Or to say "what?"., Welcome to Sri Lanka. 🇱🇰

I mean if you're going to do a head nod it might as well be this honestly. Forward nod just feels so stiff and professional. Like it's approving but like an inkstamp on an application approving. They're doing the jazz hands with their heads, you can actually feel happiness and approval in that.

Indian head bobbles are ADORABLE and so endearing. When I was a kid I had a very good friend down the street who was Indian and I’ll never forget how adorable I found her head bobs. She brought me to her house for dinner quite a few times and her whole family was so sweet, always smiling, made delicious food, was very welcoming and sweet- and they all did it. I found it to be the cutest thing ever. Then I noticed it’s a country- and culture- wide habit and it is SO CUTE.

But previously, most people would’ve been unaware of it bc I doubt it made it into printed travel books or longer travel vlogs? They also have the typical nod and shake (yes/no) gestures. They just have more. So they might be limiting the head movements to whatever the destination understands. Generally speaking Indians are usually easy going and good with blending in with locals.

@@Yeeha494I was really fortunate to start my career in the trades in an apartment complex that primarily had Indian immigrants and workers as tenants. Being with these people on a daily basis really opened my eyes to the culture, the values, and the body language. It got to a point where I would have people who didn’t speak much English (mostly grandparents that came in to help with the little ones) but I could kind of vaguely communicate with body language, and they would do the same back. Also, the FOOD!! Oh my god, as someone who loves spicy, fragrant, and delicious food, one thing that I learned is Indians LOVE TO COOK FOR GUESTS AND NEIGHBORS. My wife and I lived in the complex, and when we got sick with COVID the grandma across the hall found out and left food at our door. No idea what it really was, but I swear the spicy food made me regain my sense of smell and taste.
