In today's video, we have a competition between 4 of my small top handle vintage chainsaws. The saws in the contest are:
vintage Frontier F35 chainsaw
vintage Stihl 020 AV Super chainsaw
vintage John Deere 40V chainsaw
vintage McCulloch Mini Mac 35 chainsaw
It was a fun video to do with a surprising winner and a surprising loser. I also show a little bit of fixing a chain for on one of the chainsaws and talked about the oils that I use to keep my saws running their best.

Back in the '90s my parents ran a small firewood business. Dad had a Pro Mac 610 with a 20 inch bar (which I still use) and even mom got into it using the Mini Mac you are using here. Just the unique sound of the Mini Mac alone brings back so many good memories. Thank you for sharing!

The Frontier saws became very popular as arborist saws in their heyday, because of the light weight and good power.

The rakers are too low, .030", instead of .025, making the chain too aggressive. Will wear in with use. Even so, the little Mac has plenty of power to cut with it.

Interesting video. Like your humor :) I like that Mini Mac. My hubby is saying no to me having a chain saw :( He mentioned "kick back". I don't know. But just once in my life I'd like to run a chain saw. They sure seem to need a lot of mechanical upkeep. My stepson has 3 or 4 chain saws and none of them work. I'll recommend he watch your videos.

Chainsaws can be dangerous, but with some common sense, and watching how to video's, they can be used safely. One thing I rant about, and don't like, are safety chains. These prevent kick back in most cases, and for a first timer, would be a good idea. I don't like them as they don't cut fast like I like. I have used chainsaws since 1980, with no problems or close calls as to being injured. I have never had anyone show me how to operate one either. I have watched tree cutting video's put out by forestry services and others on proper chainsaw use, and they are excellent. The owners manuals have a lot of info in them also. Gasolene powered chainsaws require technical expertise to keep them in good running and safe operation. I would suggest using a battery powered chainsaw. They come with safety chains on them, and require virtually no maintenence. It is very satisfying cutting wood, especially if you heat with wood.

I like the little old saws a lot myself although I own some big saws also. Ironically the mini Mac is my favorite. I have an almost nos mint one with the form shaped case, sales and warranty paperwork and polished stainless 14 in bar, my favorite is my fully ported, zama carbureted mini mac, talk about loud.... It will pull a 16in low pro half chisel thru hardwood faster than my big saws. I have enough parts to build 5 saws. Love em

Mr. Poo most likely would win a competition between these saws, as it is performing pretty good with the mods done to it. It also has a 20 to 25 percent advantage in displacement.@@timothybyrom5560

You can forget about that Red Armorhype about being stabilized for two years. I tried to crank up my Poulan Super25, today and must have pulled it over 100 times - nuthin, nop pop, fizzle or anything but me dripping sweat on the saw. Finally, I wised up and dumped the Red Armor which had been in it about a year. I filled it with 50:1 Echo Power Blend Gold, also an FD oil.it popped on the second pull and cranked up in a couple more. I let it runfor 15 minutes and put it in storage condition, since I-rarely use it. My MAC 32-16with the same vintage Red Armor did crank up and runOK, but not the Poulan.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 Жыл бұрын
I am unfamiliar with the claim about the oil and gas being stabilized for two years The saws I have been using the Red Armor in are never not used for more than a couple of months, and I have had no issues related to the oil. I was at an Echo dealer recently and asked what the difference between the Red Armor and the Power blend gold was, and he said the only difference is the additive used in the Red Armor to remove carbon. Don't know if that is true, but that is what I was told.

@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 I will say my MAC 32-16 cranked OK and it was originally filled with RA at the same time. I checked my records and both were initially filled with RA on 14 Gfeb 21 and both were last run on 10 Sep 21, until today. On both occasions, they had been run 15 minutes and topped off with new fuel. I did notice the gas in the Poulan was a brown color, indicating to me it was bad. Both RA and PBG are FD oils. 50:1 PBG is my current operational gas. I put that damn MS 251 to bed for the winter today, with PBG. I will wake it up next spring and see how it behaves, then. My new Stihl saws like it. My Poulan ran it, fine, too. I am going to switch every saw I have over to PBG.. those I do not put to bed for the winter.

I was going say that McCulloch chain sure is hungry. I was hoping the Frontier would win. ;) those ex Pioneer engineers really knew what they were doing. As for being finicky have you pulled the spark plug on it and reused it? If you did maybe the plug isn’t sealing. If you pressure test an engine with a plug that’s been removed and replaced 9 times out of ten they leak and you’ll see bubbles at the sealing surface of the plug. That’s with the washer style plugs. I still haven’t got my Husky 35 going yet but I’ll get it going for this years firewood.

The Frontier is an interesting little saw. The times I have run it so far, the weather has been hot, and it has a bit of a problem with vapor lock. Now that the weather is cooling down I will be doing more cutting with it. I had put a new plug in it as part of the repairs to get it going, so that should be fine. The Stihl 020 and the Frontier were the two saws that were the most finicky in the hot weather. Both run hotter than the other saws did.

The Red Armor oil works great. The saws that I use for tree and brush work, never sit for more than a couple of months, and I only use non ethanol fuel. I don't have to do nearly as much fuel related repairs on my equipment as a result. Thanks for watching.
