Our youngest daughter was out your way T a public school communicators conference in Seattle. Seattle has the sorriest airport that I have seen for a big city - only one main runway. Atlanta has four main runways. She said everything is very pricey, too. It doesn’t matter her school system paid for it!

Washinton state has a lot of infrastructure problems due to the stupidity of the government run by left wing loonies. Our roads are terrible, as most of the gas tax money ends up in the general fund and is spent on really stupid projects that the left wing loonies see as priorities. Due to over taxation and really stupid regulations, many of the major corporations have left our state. Boeing has most of it's production done in other states and overseas, Kenworth (Paccar) does most of it's manufacturing in other states and Mexico, and the list goes on and on. Washington has one of the highest tax rates in the country, but has little to show for all that misspent money.

When those came out there were a lot of complaints of excessive compression. Stihl put out a service bulletin for putting a cylinder gasket on 'em, from the factory they were assembled w/o 1. Those were considered 'hot rod' saws.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 4 күн бұрын
The Stihl 034 is Wierdball saw, as it has some features of a pro saw and many cheapo substandard features as well. It was sold as a pro saw and many of the comments I received about this saw said that in pro use in certain circumstances they gave good service, but disliked because of the hard starting and common failures like the starter and clutch bearing. I doubt that a cylinder gasket would drop the compression much. This saw should have had a decomp valve and a purge valve for the fuel system, which would have made for a very good saw. This saw doesn't like hard cutting and the chain stall easily, but for branching, brushing and small diameter wood, it is indeed a HOT ROD ! I am on the lookout for an 034 Super, as it has a decomp valve and a bit more displacement, and hopefully some torque. Time will tell.

@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 The 034S was the 036 in theory. Those had 2 starter pawls but the starter pulley ratio was still wrong. Our shop overstocked on the starter pawls & pulleys in those days. Stihl would sometimes have 3 variations of the same model with different cylinder sizes, it made things interesting! The 038, for instance, had 3 variations, 61cc, 67cc & 72cc. My recollection of the 034 was 034S, 036, 360, 361, etc. Some were redesigns that were better but cheaper made, it's all about $.

You are spot on about Stihl making small running changes on parts, and in many cases not interchangeable, how dumb. From the comments I have received the 034S became the 036. Some have mentioned that not all 036's had decomp valves, how strange ! Most comments say the 034S and the 036 had some torque, which the 034 lacks. I am spoiled ,as my first saw was a McCulloch, and is still in service after 40 plus years of use, and is easy to start, super reliable and needs only regular maintenance. I have had newer Husky's and Stihls, but they always had glitches and eventually complete failures when they weren't that old. The parts prices were stupid also. All my McCulloch's are still on the job and have never suffered any major failures. The Stihl's that I have in my collection were all donations from kind and generous people. Working on them gives one insight as to the engineering, both good and bad. Keeps me sharp as a mechanic !

Mrs. O is doing well in her recovery, but it will be at least several months before she will be able to walk again. I don't do restoration videos as it takes a lot of time to compile the video clips, organize them, edit them and eventually post them. Mrs. O has always done the camera work, compiling, editing and posting, and she will only be able to do a very limited amount of this for the foreseeable future. I am planning on a video on Aug.. 6th, as I can get some of my family to do some camera work etc. on a limited basis. Unfortunately I don't have the time to do an extended resto video, and will only be doing our once a week short videos as things normalize again. Thanks for commenting and watching.

My neighbor gave me his 025, he was gonna throw it out becuase it was too hard to start. It does take a bit to get going, may have to try these mods. My 041 farmboss is the main firewood producer, but a little heavy for some of the lighter work.

My 025 was given to me because it was hard to start, had poor performance and was unreliable. The mods I did made the saw easy starting, much more powerful and reliable. It is now a very useful little saw and is great for firewood work.

I found an old 034 from 1985. Same chassis as the 036. Same era as the 064. Since my 034 was blown up I put an 036 piston and cylinder on it. I’ve got an 18” and a 25” bar for it and it pulls a 25” reasonable. Not like my 064 but it does alright. Has a small spline on it so it takes the same rim as a stihl 026. And not all 036 saws had decomps on them, the 036 saws I’ve seen didn’t have them but the 036 pros did

The last of the 034's, the 034 Super had a decomp valve and 61.5 cc's displacement. It was a much better saw than the standard 034. I have not ever had or run an 036, so I don't know much about them.

I don't use injector 2 stroke oil. For years I have used the 40 weight based 2 stroke oils, mostly Bardahl VBA, which is no longer available. I have started using Echo Red Armor oil in some of my newer, but still vintage saws and equipment. This oil has a very high film strength and has been a good replacement for most of my applications. I still have a small stash of Bardahl and some really old Castrol oils that I use in my oldest equipment and antique outboard motors. I have never experienced a lubricating engine failure when using these oils. The only lubricating failures I have experienced were a few of my chainsaws, using Stihl and Husky oils.

Castor based oils have a tendency to separate from the gas in certain circumstances. The main reason I don't use castor based oils is that they don't burn clean and if stored for long times, leave deposits in the carb and fuel system.

The old saws are better made and easier to repair and maintain in most cases for sure. The new homeowner/light use farm saws are very cheaply made, and the carbs are crappy. The EPA has messed up a lot of good equipment.

I was surprised that powersharp was reintroduced again after many years of being off the market. I watched some videos on the PowerSharp. The chain looks to be the same as the old one. The kit comes with a special bar, chain and sharpening attachment. Makes sharpening the chain a quick and easy job. It looks like it doesn't cut as fast as a sharp standard chain and when sharpening the chain, a lot of sparks shoot out, which might be bad in a really dry area with a lot of dry weeds etc. around. The set up is definately for the casual user with no chainsaw chain sharpening skills.
