4 Ways to Add DEPTH to Your Drawings (with examples)

Peter Draws

Күн бұрын

Drawing is easy, but drawing things you are satisfied with isn't always. That's why it helps to helps to find something about the process you enjoy, so you don't get discouraged when you keep turning out results that aren't satisfactory to you.
Today we're going to look at four easy ways to add depth to your art. These are just four examples that I noticed I was using in my own art, and are by no means the only or best ways. I want to encourage you to just play around with art, and not expect yourself to get it right immediately, or ever, in fact. I definitely haven't figured it all out yet, and I don't know what I would do if I did.

It's like Einstein once said after staring at an equation for 31 days straight, "It's all sticks and noodles and sometimes they overlap". Great guy that Einstein, I've heard he was pretty smart and it's clear Peter has studied him closely. I actually really like hearing your method and the reasons you do things because it's handy to think about art differently to yourself sometimes.

I've been trying my hand at doing some abstract drawings like yours the last couple weeks and it's crazy just how easy you make it look. The one thing I've noticed is how much a tiny little detail can add to the overall depth and texture to the piece, and how even focusing on just form and contrast will come out with some interesting compositions. They're very minimal despite how minimalist they appear when they're finished. Anyway trying to draw in this style has been incredibly relaxing and fun, I just wanted to say how inspiring your work and videos have been to me. I find myself wanting to pick up my sketchbook and start doing one of these drawings instead of just vegging out online these days. It's almost meditative and has been really helpful for my mental health lately, so thanks for existing Peter!

I’m retired now and finally I have time to do what I’ve always dreamt about doing. I really enjoy your videos and your calming voice relaxes me. It helps me to take in what you’re saying without all the unnecessary background noise. I hope that makes sense. Anyway, thank you. I can’t believe I just discovered your videos a few weeks ago, also I bought a fountain pen and I haven’t used one since I was in high school a long time ago. Thanks for that too, I’m really enjoying it.

Or even just videos where you talk about what you're thinking while drawing. That's actually what inspired me to try drawing. You were explaining that you just make lines and see what happens and how it doesn't matter if they're good lines. Fix them if you need to or just add more that you do like. Some how those things had never occurred to me.

Went to the MC Escher museum in the Hague (the Netherlands) yesterday. He plays around with perspectives. Using bird's-eye view for example, where you look down on something creates depth as well. The man is a genius and looking at his art can give you a lot of pointers. I'm not a drawer myself but an art enthousiast and learned a great deal about techniques by just looking and try to figure out how artists work. Loved this video Peter because the process of making art is equally exciting if not more than the art work itself. (But that is just my humble opinion)

Great tutorial, but what i love the most about it are the little comments such as "You don't have to do it exactly like that" "No need to rush" and "No need to be perfect". Litterally the opposite of what most of my art teachers used to say. It had to be their way, with those colours, with those supplies, not with such harsh lines, yadda yadda. It made the only thing i enjoy nightmare and a chore. As a person with anxiety and authority issues this was soo soothing and relaxing to watch, love it so soo much

Another good technique is a repeating shape or pattern that is a larger scale in the foreground and smaller the further into the background. The brain reads it as depth.

First time watching one of your videos for a while and I didn't realize how much I missed your voice. Mostly been on your Instagram, but your videos have never failed to inspire me to draw, even during the most difficult art block. Love you man, keep up the great work ❤
