I love watching videos where we learn how to create our own surfaces! I keep looking for videos on making our own pastels as well! I do not care so much for the music, I would rather listen to you expand on your techniques or just about your daily life rather than a music choice. Lovely painting Susan keep them coming! Thanks.

I'm so grateful for you and how much of your knowledge you share. I can't afford Pastelmat but coming from a watercolour background I have a lot of spare paper. I'm currently waiting for my clear gesso to dry on some lovely bright backgrounds. Cant wait for them to dry so i can try them out. ❤❤

Hi Susan, I’m in Western Australia and have just discovered soft pastels. Right now - mid 2023 - inflation in high and my mortgage is through the roof. And getting a few things to start off in this medium are expensive, especially here in Australia due to availability of local supplies and shipping of anything else. Guess I just wanted to say that I appreciate your generosity in the teaching you are sharing. I’ve looked around online at pastel lessons and many are just not affordable for me at the moment, though I feel being creative while things are hard is even more important than when things are going easier. So thank you! I’m learning heaps from your videos and I’m hooked!

Hello Susan! I took your advice and visited Rita Kirkman... Wow!!!! I was amazed how she looks, so much like the girl who beat me up in third grade; OMG... just because she was hoarding all the beautiful colors. I sure learned a life's lesson about girls that day. At age 14 she began to run after me and I've never understood why. Oh well... She is a well trained artist'. I watched all her moves as she follows an algorithm in creating her madness. I knew from the very first painting of a Bull, that she was a portrait artist'. Always placing the eyes about 2/3rds up the page. Also, her camera angles show how the Greeks used this method of creating this 'convexity' (#) of the camera lens; as your eyes move downwards pass the upper third to the middle, we began to look at the top of thing's like the feet, top of the knee, or the hips. Her under painting hue, is a middle value; from there she lays in her deepest darks; pushing the model forward, while placing lighter, to lights, placing everything in the background. One last thing... You recall the rule of reflected light..? Where, morning light is high blue, so the shadows must be warm. She keeps her warm orange as shadows muting any colors on top. I think I said that right lol Thanks again ;)

OH Ha Ha Brother! That is so funny about Rita reminded you of your third grade bully!! LOL! I guess I might have been a bully in first grade. A certain boy kept playing with my hair in class, saying he was going to marry me. I don't remember doing it, but my mom said I hit his head into a pine tree at P.E. I got in trouble of course, but the boy never bothered me again... HA HA HA! Wow, I need to take notes on your amazing comments regarding Rita's work... and here I was thinking she just painted "pretty cows"! Seriously, I love your artistic knowledge. I am trying to learn more technical principals as I continue in my art career.

@@monetcafe it's the best video on making pastel surfaces coz in india, pastel paper is rare nd one has to get it ordered from abroad nd then do a great amount of custom paperwork So u gave us a great hack I'd love to say Pls do more experiments I just love em

Marbledust is the substance that you use to make homemade gesso. If you want to know how to make your own gesso you can find the recipe in pink poodle crafts. She makes a lot of homemade stuff... Congratulations on your 30k subscribers...

Too long video to find out a gesso recipe: 1 cup of PVA glue 1/4 cup of water 4 tablespoons of calcium carbonate or marble dust (the only difference is color)

I would say a "medium" touch. Basically just getting a uniform application over the entire surface ;)

Hi Susan, Have you ever experimented with mixing in pumice with the clear gesso? From my understanding the pumice is a little grittier than the marble dust and I wondered what kind of surface that would create or if it would just give it too much tooth (like the course modeling paste in your other surfaces video). I’d try it myself, but I don’t have any pumice yet!

Yes, I did try the pumice with gesso prior to buying the marble dust, and just as you suspected it was a bit too coarse. I was able to sand it down (once dry) with some very fine sandpaper to make it work though. In my own experience the marble dust was a bit less textured. :)

Thank you so much for posting your videos. I am learning and learning. Its really difficulr but something draws me to pastels so much ( even though my oil paintings are much better). I teied clear gesso few times now like you. First time the 2 layers were super coarse and uneven. The underpainting was too much visible it was disturbin the eye. Now I did just one layer diluted 50/50 with water (its easier to spread for people like me who get stressed by quick drying). Its still quite coarse. I was practicing on sanding paper 600 and I liked it. Any tips? On material or technique.

I like your idea of thinning the gesso a bit with water. Also, I've actually taken a piece of REALLY fine sandpaper and lightly sanded the surface once the clear gesso dries. It seemed to knock off some of the inconsistencies. I actually have just been experimenting with painting on the material used to make brown paper bags! I was pleasantly surprised at the results. I did this on just the surface alone and then I also used the same recipe I share in the video here to apply and let dry. I really liked it and I'm going to be sharing a video on this process hopefully by next week :) Keep having fun! That's the key and I know what you mean about being drawn to pastels.... something so earthy about them with gorgeous color.

what brand of mat board do you use> your board does not look like it warps when applying water.

I actually can't remember the brand. I've had it for a long time in a large quantity from a past framing project. It does warp a bit, but not too bad.

Hi Susan. Have you tried baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) instead of marble dust (calcium carbonate) for adding grit to your pastel surface? Thanks in advance for your response.

@@monetcafe Baking soda adds grit to the gesso (I mixed it with regular white gesso and a little water, tinted the mix with gouache, then applied 2 thin layers to watercolour paper using a foam brush) but I don't know how this prepared surface compares to commercial sanded papers because I've never used sanded papers (I can't afford them). I'd appreciate it very much if you could develop a recipe using baking soda that replicates sanded surfaces like Uart and Pastelmat. Again, thank you for your videos - they're extremely helpful.

Sorry Ladies but baking soda dissolves in water so may not work or may not be durable or painting may noy hold up in damp climates??? I have not tried it but I use mostly diy salt, baking soda,alcohol and vinegar as cleaning products in my home so that is where this advice comes from...

Yes, I have used pumice powder to make my own pastel surface. You may want to practice first and play around with the proportions. Have fun!

I absolutely love this... SALT..! Is a component. A constituent of something greater; a composition serving a cause. A taste that says; more. A thirst to be satisfied. This is how a true Christian, that never hides their love; fueled by all that is good; who shines into the world; an attraction for the preaching of the gospel. To avoid that lids dry out on you, put vaseline on them. So the lid always open very smooth..

Those are great options but I try to avoid Gesso because it is not vegan. Is there any alternative? Thanks!

Gesso recipe from pink poodle crafts: 1 cup of PVA glue 1/4 cup of water 4 tablespoons (which is about 1/4 of a cup?) of calcium carbonate or marble dust (the only difference is color) I wonder if anyone tried starch instead of marble dust. Which one is better?
