I have a game changer for you. Inject BT into the stem, above any wholes you find in the stem. Every 2 weeks till you stop seeing the adult moth flying around. I didnt loose one plant last year and I usually loose them all. And you only inject a tiny tiny bit. No other bugs/ insects are affected. Everybody stays safe!

That's interesting. I always worry about the dust and potentially forgetting to rinse it off next morning. I buried my main stem by mounding soil over it and let it root along the way. It had no problems.

@@rebeccabier8978 Bacillus Thuringiensis a natural bacteria that only affects insects eating your plants. It won't hurt pollinators.

We've had excellent results wrapping the lower 6-8 inches of our squash with medical gauze held in place by a small piece of tape. Field tested aluminum foil wrap versus gauze last season and lost a few plants wrapped in foil. Had crops decimated in the past and have seen vine borers so I know they're present in my area. IMO, I'd skip neem and other spray treatments for a physical barrier.

I picked off between 100-200 vine borer moth eggs yesterday from my zucchini plants. Every single one (not a single exception) was on leaf stems. Some toward the leaf, some toward the vine but all on the leaf stems. Have not found a single egg actually on a leaf (top or bottom.) These things are TINY and flat like a corpuscle. They are not big and shiny and round and in batches. They are single dots that you have to get right down under the plant and look for. Found one entry hole with frass so far despite my efforts. Started spraying with Bt last week and neem oil to come. Wrapped the stems with foil when they were little. Poked a large needle into stem near the hole to try killing the larvae.

BT is good for caterpillars, but it isn’t very broad spectrum. You may want to consider switching to spinosad. Spinosad will kill both the borer and the adult moth, and it if you spray after sunset, the chances of impacting pollinators is low. Spinosad has a mild toxicity to bees. It isn’t a severe toxicity, so spraying after sunset is a good way to ensure their activity is low, and by the time they come back the next morning, any residue shouldn’t harm them anymore.

I use a syringe w/ large gauge needle to inject Bt into the hollow of the leaf stems. It runs down the stems, contacts larvae, and then pools at the base.

@@TheMillennialGardener Excellent advice. I read in here from a couple people who have had luck with BT spray in controlling this pest. I did know it was mostly used for caterpillars such as on brassicas etc but I’ll try anything. I will search out some Spinosad and try that too. I am getting a nice zucchini harvest right now but the borers are trying to take a foothold.

I've had all my early zucchini plants killed one year, then replanted in July and had NO problems here in Michigan. I think for our area at least, the vine borer moth has a limited time when they are laying eggs, maybe late June-mid July?

Sadly here in MN the weather was so warm we have the eggs now but my plants are barely out of the ground. Just have first set of true leaves. I have not seen one adult. Hundreds of eggs tho...on about 10 plants. They even laid on top of the leaves. But mostly on the stems right at the base... dirt line. Our season is so short I wonder if a second crop would make it to fruit stage. Very sad.

If you don't want to use an oil due to fear of burning your plant, then get AzaSol. It is the same thing but in a powder/water soluble form. It is a bit expensive but well worth it. I also will use Bt and I inject using a syringe into the base of the plant or where ever you see vine borer damage. I have also heard of using athletic tape and wrap it around the base to keep out the vine borer.

I just heard of the BT syringe and it has me rethinking growing any type of squash. I quit several years ago because the only thing that worked for me was complete coverage and hand pollinating.

Love these ideas. I am going to burying the vines for sure. I have also heard that wrapping the stems of the young plants with panty hose deters the moth from laying her eggs. I am going to try both this year.

I wrapped mine with tin foil, but I like the panty hose better since it's stretchy. I also mounded up the soil over the main stem. No problems.

i just wanted to say boiling water doesn’t actually sterilize soil mixes it pasteurizes it. It helps beneficial bacteria (mycorrhiza and others) to overcome and take over. 100% sterile soil wouldn’t be beneficial because it would leave the soil defenceless against bad bacteria. microwaving for extended amounts of time could be harmful to said beneficials and leave the mix defenceless. I know this wasn’t the topic of this video but I had to point it out! Love your content regardless 🤓

Can you grow late transplants for winter squash as well or just summer squash? My winter squash takes 100 days to mature which would be a few days before my first frost date - would I get any fruit if I did a succession?

Got some Natsturtium which are not doing well. I know they don't like water, but I keep just enough in the container because of the Texas heat, I just fertilized with JOBE ORGANIC. It is on the back patio facing the East sun so I don't know what to do with it. It is large and starting to yellow with all the rain we got a couple of weeks ago. The leaves are withery and yellow. What can I do to revive?

Thenasturtiums often die in heat over 90 degrees I have some and the ones in the shade seem to be hanging on better

I have given up on squash and cucumbers this year !! Tried three times and the bugs got me ! I used the B-safe product but still had Boarers .... I do not see how growers do it ! My cucumbers started off excellent and like overnight they were hit. Do you think netting would work? I really hate using it because i love SEEING MY GARDEN .

Hi Ron. I have heard that using netting over the plants will work to keep the vine borer adult moth from laying her eggs on the plants. Of course then you have to remove it to hand-pollinate the female flowers. I think the main growers/distributors for squash, cucumbers etc are in areas like the west coast where the vine borer moth doesn’t live. It’s so frustrating to walk out and see your whole crop laying flat on the ground. Been there more than once. They are very persistent and their eggs are teeny tiny so it’s difficult to win this battle without sitting in the garden all day looking for and killing the moths when they come.

Yes and no. Insect dust refers in this case specifically to dead bug dust or carbaryl dust AKA Sevin. While DE does hurt hard shell insects it’s no where near as effective as carbaryl which actively kills insects . DE is not nearly as effective as pesticides especially with things like squash vine borers DE will basically do nothing . DE is , however pretty much non toxic unless inhaled as a dust so no worries eating things with some of it one it as opposed to sevin you want to be as careful as possible to avoid fruit and flowers treated with it . It is poison after all even though it does degrade or decompose rapidly.

Its not a contact poison so it is less effective. It has to get into joints of insect, like beetles, and it grinds their exoskeleton.. I'm in CT. At what point will we be finished with the life cycle of the Borer? Can you explain that part a bit more?

Not sure as it varies. You have to check it out on line for your area. The life cycle is probably similar on the east coast. Sure... the moth is born and it has X amount of weeks before it dies. New moths come next year. So it is only that period of time of when eggs can be laid. Wrapping stems, burying vines, other means such as essential oil spray never works for me. For years. 2 years now I have a crop using the injection method. There is info on you tube about it.

As always thank you Gary for all your educational videos!! Question: What type of sprayer and wand are you using to spray the neem oil with? I have just a regular bottle sprayer and it’s very annoying to use especially when you have to spray a lot of plants!

My kale plants have bugs that bore in the stem and eat it away would neem oil remedy it??? My squash issue is powdery mildew, being in Florida during hurricane season is probably the reason 4 the fungus with the extra moisture in the air

The neem helps if the bugs eat leaves with neem. However it doesnt kill right away so you may see some holes. not so much cucumbers. I typically don't have vine issues with them so I actually never tried burying them. I get cucumber beetles on them. Hi Gary Super important question! I have treated my zucchini with Nimoy oil faithfully diatomaceous earth faithfully wrapped stem of zucchini noticed vine bore larva made it into couple leaves so cut them off killed larva etc After week or so noticed when I went out today one out of two of the main stems one side was wilted if I were to cut that side of the plant off I already took care of the larva where it had entered again will the zucchini live?????? Also Your advice as always it started another zuc plant inside 😉

Not DE. BT is good for chewing insects, Insect dust is any dust that kills lots of things. They killed 100% of my spaghetti squash plants last year (and all my pumpkins). Thankfully, they seem to not bother with the yellow crookneck summer squash or the butternut squash though.

I heard you can lightly wrap 2 inch strips of foil around the base of the stem to deter them. Is it too late in the season to start back ups? Thanks brother.

I don't mix neem with anything. It is probably fine but I don't like doubling oils as I don't know how they react and is is double oil on a leaf at one spray. Diatomaceous earth doesnt work, BT injections dont work, companion flowers dont work, sevin doesnt work, yellow cups dont work, pulled the squash up and am switching to green beans

BT injections work for me when started at seedling stage and followed by spray.

The only thing that works for me is injecting the seedling stems w BT solution in a hypodermic needle from Amazon and spray PRN. I also soaked my seeds before planting w some BT in it. So far I have one germinated, jury’s out of it affects germination of the other seeds planted.

Great video, but I'm feeling overwhelmed. Hydrogen peroxide, neem oil, peppermint oil, aspirin, BT, Captain Jack's,.... Ugh! Putting all these on our plants just to be proactive can't be good, can it? I've perused your videos. While some of the aforementioned are specific to certain plants and conditions, most are out. And scheduling? Some every week, some twice a week, some no more than 10,times a season. Ugh! Does one really need to do all this? 🤔

These are all options. You don't have to do them all. Depends on the impact of insects and what insects you get in your area. My schedule is more so based on what I see and when the insects show up. Looking at the plants. Every plant in my garden doesnt get everything. It would be overwhelming. There is just no way to cover that in every video. So take notes on when problems show. And build your routine of a couple seasons. Good luck. Put gloves on, or use your bare hand and rub all around the base of the squash EVERY DAY. This is an old timer but very effective way of controlling borers. Whenever I commit to this practice I have success . If I let it slide, the squash are done. Good luck borer warriors! Now on to the terrifying squash bugs and cucumber beetles😖
