What other options do you use to share projects and collaborate ?

I really don't do this often. But, #1To collaborate, let's say with a vocalist who is going to track in his or her studio using a different DAW and different plugins. Well, all they really need is a "Bounce" of what you have so far in .WAV format. If they want multi tracks to, let's say, create their own "Cue" mix for tracking. Then again all they would need is a "bounce" of the tracks or "Busses". Therefore they would have all the FX's pre mixed, ("Baked in") and would not need the same plugins to reproduce that sound you worked so hard to achieve and, Why would they have to? They are just laying down a vocal track for you to add to your production. Along with the.WAV files, I would also provide the "Vocalist" with a "Tempo track" or a recorded click track. (I believe in CUBASE you can "imbed" the tempo track into the audio tracks). And as a courtesy I would also provide the "KEY OF THE SONG". Now from the vocalist, all you would need are the raw, un effected, dry, straight from the pre amp .WAV files. If there are multiple takes you need the same from all, if you are going to "comp" them into one vocal take or layered takes. If the vocalist adds FX's to their tracks "as an expression of their own vision of what they should sound like". These tracks should be "bounced" as .Wav files and clearly labeled as "WET" or "My vision" or something of the sort. Or better yet sent in a separate file. If you like what you hear in these files, you don't necessarily need the same plugins to reproduce this sound. In reality you could probably use these files instead but, 9 out of 10 I wouldn't. #2Give your half finished project to another to finish. Why? Best case scenario. Allow them to use your set up to finish the project. Worst case. Give them your I lock account and let them have at it If some one wants your files just give them the raw .WAV files and let them mix it. I guess what I am saying is "The best way to share audio files for now is .WAV".

I always use Chris Selims method of using mixbusses/groups while mixing. Those Wav's can be send to the person you work with and he can make a mix to record with. A very easy and quick way I guess no matter wat DAW that person uses.

@@LanewoodStudios Just STEM BUSSES really. So mixbusses just before the MASTER OUT. Drums, Guitars, Vox, Keys etc. Every channel or eartlier Grouptracks go to these busses and from there to the Master Output. So you make STEMS instantly. And easy to export these. Check his channel and there is a CUbase MixTemplate from him you can download, that has these busses inside.

Does the backup method work between different versions of Cubase, particularly Elements 11 & 13 in both directions?

I must check out this tutorial, it might answer my question. I need to share a project with myself :) I have 2 complete Cubase setups, in different part of my house. The digital stage piano is too heavy for moving back and forth, keyboard/arranger + MIDI keyboard controller in the other location. Anyway, I’ll check this tutorial first, then I might ask for suggestions.

@@LanewoodStudios Both good ideas to consider, thank you ! The Audio Interfaces are different models, Steinberg UR44C vs UR22 mkII. But that’s ok, if ports doesn’t match I mean.

hi, I have problems with moving project in another pc. I moved the project and the audio folder. when I open in the second pc, it automatically finds all the files, but I cannot listen anything in speaker. so I took a look track by track and I selected the output "realtek" that s my audio card, it stil doesn't play even if I see the green pulses track by track playing. if I create a brand new project on that pc, it works I can record and listen. I need this because I record in a pc and I post product in another one. can you help me please?

It's hard to see what's wrong without checking the project on your other PC, but it must be something in that project that is not working on your new PC. Perhaps a plugin, an external routing, IO configuration, control room setup, or something else. I would start at the end of the chain. Just check what is necessary to get any sound from the moved project, e.g. put a signal generator plugin directly on the output bus. If you get no sound, then something is wrong after that stage and you look further. Good luck!

@@LanewoodStudios Solved! of course, i did the first 2 steps 1) Studio -->Studio Config (chose the right audio peripheric and driver) 2) Studio --> Audio Connections, i deleted the "missing audio" outputs, added my new outputs (Stereo Bus "realtek high definition audio L and R), everything was normal but still no sound played 3) track by track i assigned, on the left, the Output to "stereo out" (i hope there is a way to do it all together, it s annoying for 16chls!) but still no sounds. 4) THEN, FINAL, on top, i had to click on "deactivate all mute states" (even if no track was in mute!!) and then it begun to play!!

How well does method 1 work if the two collaborators have different versions of cubase (eg v12 and v9)?
@LanewoodStudios
@LanewoodStudios 9 ай бұрын
Cubase is pretty good with backwards and forwards compatibility so I would expect it to work well. Obviously if you’re using v12 specifics in your project, they will not be available in v9.

What's about using vst connect for the collaboration during the recording sessions? Any experiences?
@LanewoodStudios
@LanewoodStudios 3 жыл бұрын
Yes good suggestion, I didn't present that one in the video because I do not have a lot of experience with it and it is not exactly the same as sharing all tracks of a project. Like you said, it is more for having someone record into your project from a remote location. But yes it is a way of collaborating of course. There is also VST Transit though which seems to be more for sharing a project with another producer/mixer. I still have to look into that. Any experiences with either on your side perhaps ?

@@LanewoodStudios Well, I tried once to use the vst connect and on the other side the vst performer to record a guitar solo into my cubase project. It failed, because there is a strong internet connection and a huge transfer rate needed. It could work, if there is a wired and powerful internet connection on both sides - as professional music recording studios usually have. In my case as I have my home recording studio in the basement with a WiFi internet connection, there is no chance to operate it. On the other hand there is as well a collaboration just with the exchange of the stereo summary track as mp3-file and by return the added track as well as a mp3 track possible - at least if all participants have cubase ;-).
@LanewoodStudios
@LanewoodStudios 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experience with VST connect. Yes if you just want someone to record a track for your project you can just provide them with a stereo track of your song and let them record their part on their own. What VST connect adds is the ability to coach the musician 'live' as you would normally do in a studio, give them immediate feedback, ask them to record another take, etc. But I understand, you probably do need a sufficiently fast internet connection for that. And that is not always possible. Chris Selim has a nice video about VST connect by the way: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r6pmq6yAs8eloJs.html
