$40 DIY BMW i3 REx Oil & Filter Change (2016 MY)

As more and more of the BMW i3 REx vehicles come into second owners and run out of BMW maintenance service packages, I thought I'd share my first oil and filter change for the range extender generator in my 2016 REx model with 17k miles.
Besides not having the right filter socket, the experience was largely uneventful. I would expect any handy-ish DIYer to have no issues with this vs. any ICE car oil change procedure.
There's precious little in the way of video on the subject so I hope this inspires you with the confidence to take on this $40 preventive maintenance item.
Be memorable, be well. D Wray

This is awesome. My dealer was going to charge $112 (USD) to do this! I was dumbfounded. And now that I see how easy it is, it would have been highway robbery. Thanks so much! I'm not a car guy (although I've done quite a few oil changes on other cars), but even I can do this!

Great show mate! Thanks especially for showing how to do the reset on the display. Quick question, do you think if I jack up the rear; would I need to lower it back down to get a good drain on the oil tank? Because of the angle of the rear being higher? Thanks!
@DWraysGarage
@DWraysGarage 4 жыл бұрын
If your car is not level then, yes, putting the rear down would be the best way to evacuate the most oil. Other ideas are to do on a slope so rear lifted is still a level car and/or don't sweat the small amount that won't get out as, with routine changes, the oil stays in decent shape anyways.

At kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ndNmd8ae2tvep5s.html you install the crush washer around the drain plug. There should have been a 'spent' one that you remove when the plug comes out and they are generally considered 'single use' to be fully effective at cinching the opening. Hope this helps. Be well!

If you haven't used the Rex for a time BMW give message to perform a maintenance run. I can set the Rex going once the battery charge is below 75% I have set my no 8 'radio' button to do this. I press the set button and it brings up rex extender and I only need to press control button ( near the handbrake button) and the computer does a seamless change. It holds the charge until I turn the rex off. Brilliant. the Rex then acts as an electric generator and the electric motor still drives the car.

Foxwell NT-510 is a commonly used traditional scan tool that is recommended. I haven't personally used it. If you haven't tried the Bimmercode app and a dongle, if try it before swimming upstream in cost and complexity of tool. It's a $50 bet that you'll likely discover is quite solid for your needs. I've used on i3 and X1 with no issues. I have heard the VGate is no longer supported by BCode so you may want to go to their site for currently approved dongles. Good luck!

@DWraysGarage
@DWraysGarage 3 жыл бұрын
That's a stiff bill - what does that include? If your REx doesn't kick in often then you could probably go a little longer, but you don't want to let it go too long. Replacing the REx would be costly. Is there an 'indy' garage that would let you take them the filter and oil? I bet they'd do the work for about $100.
@KitelessRex
@KitelessRex 5 жыл бұрын
This is awesome! If you haven't covered it, can you show how to manually turn the REx on after the oil change? I read how to do it a couple months ago. I got a 2015 i3 REx back in November 2018 and plan on doing my own oil changes. Much to the shock of the BMW dealership sales guy. Cheers!

The job is easy and there's far less oil than in a regular ICE car. Can you clarify your question - I do the service light reset at the end, if that's what you mean?
@KitelessRex
@KitelessRex 5 жыл бұрын
@@DWraysGarage well normally one would start the engine after an oil change in an ICE car. But with the REx it only comes on when needed or when charge hold is enabled. There is a service mode to manually start and run the REx, presumably for testing, and maybe oil changes too. Not sure how long it would run for or how hard it would be to turn it off. I believe it's done vis the 1 button "interface" with the display behind the steering wheel. I think it's in the deep menu, go like you're going to reset the oil notice but keep holding it down for like ,10 seconds. Beyond that I can't recall how it's done. And I may be totally wrong, may need to use something like Bimmer Code to do it. Regardless this is a very helpful video. There's just so little DYI stuff on the i3. Thanks again for doing this.
@DWraysGarage
@DWraysGarage 5 жыл бұрын
I have a VGate/BimmerCode video that will show you HSOC (Hold State of Charge) that you could activate post change so long as your battery is below 75%. I didn't activate the REx immediately and suffered no adverse effects. Looking to make another BimmerCode video going deeper onto this cool tool.

@@DWraysGarage when I got my REx i3 i immediately enabled the charge hold feature and turned off the fuel tank governor we have here in the US. You can thanks the great state of California that I live in for that restriction haha. One could always just do an oil change with the car less than 75% charge, hop in, enable charge hold and drive around the block a few times. When I first got my i3, despite asking the dealership repeatedly to charge the vehicle, they didn't and handed my a car with like 10 miles of range on it, not enough to get home. It just so happens the REx hadn't been run in something like 8 weeks, I was trying to find a CCS, and the central screen was warning me the REx would run a maintenance cycle. It sprung to life while I was quietly rolling through a parking lot at like 9pm, scared the bejeebies out of me! Haha. Aaaaaanyway. Thanks so much for the conversation. Thank you for all you do to inform us. You tend to use the terms mils, millimetres, and millilitres interchangeably. One mil is a thousandth of an inch. The other measurements are metric. I am only pointing this out for those DIYers who might get confused. Before checking the final oil level, shouldn't you manually start the ReX so that the oil filter will fill up? Thanks again.

I did like this car but it lacked theater and engagement for my tastes. Super practical and zippy car. Wish they'd have designed it for more range and wider tires. I know the 2017s on have more range but the tire part still questionable (assume it help protect range). I also didn't like charging after basically any drive.

@@DWraysGarage Good point. Charging it after every drive would get annoying to me. It’s such a cool zippy looking car though.

is this engine air cooled?

There is a coolant reservoir in the trunk so there is a water cooled system. How much goes to batteries vs generator I'm not sure.

I ran out of gas on my 68 Chevy pickup. I popped it in gear, hit the starter and crawled up the driveway.

Oil change on an electric car? Not 100% electric?
@DWraysGarage

The oil change is for the 'range extender's generator that can recharge the battery while the vehicle is in motion. Not all i3s use a range extender.

Oil in an EV. 😮. 😂

Oil in a plug-in Hybrid's back up engine that makes it a viable option for many who can't jump to full EV. On a recent 1000 mile trip in my REx, 3 out of 5 of the fast charge stations I stopped at would not start for one reason or another. But I still did 60% on Battery. This lowered my lifetime on battery to 92%.
