We are Sharing the build on a pair of #40 machine taper holders for our K&T, Part Two, We get down on some cool shaping of the taper areas on our holders, being very happy with the results of the combination of using a SECO insert, the tracer pattern and overall plan coming together. ;{)-------

I appreciate that you always say "per side" or "off the diameter". So many guys don't specify when they say how much they are turning off of the part.

To hell with OSHA!! Love it! I’m in the process of buying my first lathe and mill and am so happy I’ve found your channel. Between you, Abomb and Keith Rucker (amongst others) you’ve inspired me to get into machining. As a race engine builder and off-road/snowmobile nut case with over the top OCD I think there couldn’t be a better hobby/endeavor for me than machining. Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge.

It's amazing to watch you work these older machines to achieve very good accuracy and precision. It's like watching a concert violinist play an antique violin. My dad always said that it only takes two things, TALENT and PRACTICE.

Hi Keith. It's something just a little bit special that you allow us to watch you work. Thank you very much. Nice to see that .125 cut... you still give the old girl a workout every now and then and she doesn't seem to complain to much. No time to waste when you've got material to rough out. That's Gittin'er done!

Great video as always. The camera view on top of the insert is fantastic. That lathe is so awesome. Between the capacity, the ability to remove the tool post and mount heavy tooling to the carriage and the tracer puts that lathe in a whole different realm compared to the average manual lathe. How did you find that beast! a .250" cut is nothing for that machine.

One thought/suggestion, if I may? If you fitted a spider to the back of the spindle, you could feed a bar through, until it touches the rear of the work-piece, and use it as a stop, allowing you to set the exact same length, when you flipped it around.

Fantastic video....after having spent the better part of last week tearing apart my lathe to fix damage caused by a part that was ejected from the chuck and wedged itself between the jaws and the toolpost, I found it hard to watch those heavy cuts! Nerves of steel, my friend, NERVES OF STEEL! How hot was that part after you were done roughing out the taper?

Feeding the hog. Every project that I've used to try to find the limits on my lathe, I get to .1 doc and have to go to sneaky mode. I think the wiring bugs that you eradicated from your Porsche came to rest in my little work truck. Twice in a months time that I have to bypass a shorted wire in the harness. That nasty code 44 just won't go away. I would follow your example if I didn't have another pickup waiting to take this one's place.

It has to do with the depth of cut. Later, he took deeper cuts and it went smooth. Just like driving over a pot hole on the road. If you drive slow, the wheel falls into it and it makes a huge bump. If you drive fast, it just runs over it.
@cojones8518
@cojones8518 6 жыл бұрын
Andrew - When running a lathe, unexpected changes in sound like that are usually a bad sign that things are likely getting ready to break and come flying at you. On the first cut, when it hit that groove, it was almost doubling the depth that it was cutting because it was cutting what Keith dialed in plus all of the metal from the groove all at once. On later cuts it was only cutting what was dialed in.
@KeithFenner
@KeithFenner 6 жыл бұрын
The chip load from heavier cut slows the plunging off the back side of the drop / square edge of the shim, with the angle of the stylist just enough, to be smooth and not excell the feeds like the lesser amounts of depth. ;{)-------

hey theres a part 2 already for those heavy cuts like that. I usually switch to a Karachi sandle with a little more coverage or with coolent. a river fishing sandle with a felt sole I got a pair of keen real tree camo now gotta make a stub arbor so a 3/8" thread back Jacobs 3b runs true don't ask its an integral part of the financial recovery

I will ruff it out then let it normalize before finishing, sometimes two steps but if I have a lot of operations and it is going to be completely machined in other operations then heat treat then grind finish, not so much. ;{)-------

Well I guess those machines were made in the day, as one of your mentors answered you when you asked the question, when the machines were made that you learned on you asked about the amount of acceptable tolerances of the parts that made up the machine and I believe his answer was ( there aren't any torerances either it is the right size or it is not) and that carried on throughout the whole machine manufacturing process of the day.

Something with a 3" or better hole in the head-stock and better than a 17" swing with a gap bed, to swing large wheels, at least 6 foot between centers, a tracer or taper attachment, more or less what this one measures up to be. ;{)------

Every time it drops of that ledge just before the taper it sounds like something's going to break. First time or when you stepped up the depths I understand. But the several back to back .060 cuts it seems like it shouldn't do that. .060 of a flat portion o angel portion is apparently less pressure than that drop off . Anyone know why?

So is the lathe and compound and everything doing that automatically when it switches from straight cut to the taper portion then back to straight and out or are you giving some manual input at certain points? Forgive me, I’m new to all of this. Thank you. I think I just figured it out when you said “tracer attachment” haha.
