This is the first machining video I've ever seen. First time I've seen someone indicate stock in a vise. It inspired me to get into machining, and now my garage is a machine shop. thx for sharing.

I'm not a engineering machinist kieth but do love your channel. The wealth of experience you have is mind boggling. I'm in the process of restoring a lathe from 1939. But man I have a whole lot of learning to do. But do appriciate your videos and the time you take editing / uploading. And sharing your wealth of knowledge. I'm really learning a lot from gifted people like yourself. I can't wait to get my workshop up and running and start making chips on the lathe. Then it will be time to get a milling machine. And all the rest of tools I may need. Lol.

Love the angle iron trick ... my go to is the 24th edition Machinery's Handbook - hey, it's what I got! My local 'go to' machine (engineering) shop got this in for me after I quizzed them about a problem that I had; the answer was in the geometry section, a section I still go to for inspiration! I think it has paid for itself over and over many times.

Hi Keith. Good to see you up again. The angle iron trick is helpful. I've never seen that done. I'd like to add to it. Use a second piece of angle iron on the opposite side of the part to eliminate the driving backlash. Dog bouncing may be small, but will give you some noise in your OD finish. I've seen guys drive wood wedges between lathe dogs and faceplate slots with great success. My faceplate had a cam I made that I would adjust to trap my drive dogs and eliminate the slop. It worked quite well. Take care.

If your tail stock is off a little, will it still give a true center drill hole? PS For the size of that lathe, that spindle seems to spin amazingly smooth!

For making my own taper tool holders, I have made a 30-taper plug for the bore of my spindle. So I don't worry too much about the taper, I cut it in one setup, then pull it back in to the plug to machine the tool holding features. It helps that my spindle taper is bigger than 30 taper, but even were it not, I am sure something could be arranged.

Hey Keith! I have been watching a few videos where you center drilled both sides of the workpiece and then machined it. I would have gone ahead and chuck the workpiece up, center it, machine the taper end to the finish and then part the workpiece of using my steady rest. Are there any disadvantages with that plan?

Why not rough turn with the part held in the chuck and supported with the tailstock , then finish turn between centers ?
@bcbloc026 жыл бұрын
That is how I would do it too. No need to go for ultra precision with the centers until you need that accuracy. Peeling a few inches of metal off would be better done with the grip and stability from the chuck I would think.
@daveticehurst41915 жыл бұрын
Keith. What a lot of work. Why not but the holders already made. Int 40 holders are readily available even second hand.
@SirDeanosity6 жыл бұрын
Could it help eliminate the harmonics by adding mass to the live center i.e. a split disk fastened with socket head cap screws or something like it?
@KeithFenner6 жыл бұрын
I think the chuck and tailstock mass, takes care of the centers and the whoremonics are more in the mass held so lightly in centers. ;{)------

I have an 11th edition hand book for about 25 years that I got from my neighbor that he bought new in 1942, I just bought a 30th edition only for 2 reasons 1. It has all the feeds and speeds for carbides 2. it is the BIG FONT edition, even with my glasses it's getting harder and harder to read that small print!

Hi Keith my name is Keith Gentry and my Grandad was a machinist by trade but he ended up making a living as a Pipe welder/fabricator and I followed in his footsteps as a welder/fabricator type dude...I worked in oil refineries for about 10 -12yrs them n moved to Austin Texas to start workin for a mojor HVAC company in 1999 .....Ive done alot of crazy shit in my day but man do I ish my Granddaddy could have taught me more botu the Machinest side of the trade... i love making something from nothing... and I often find myself tryn to be a hobby machinest just because ive got s o good at running a fuckin grinder....ive machined shit that you wouldnt belive would work from a fuckin grinder and drill motor....like a firing pi from a welding rod....

Standard tapers - it's moved forward in the 24th edition ... they add and remove material to try to keep a blend between old and new current, e.g. steam information probably disappeared some time ago, now they include plastics and CNC.

Sitting here visiting your channel after you go buried in other subs. Just realized I missed the sound of your lathe... :)
@georgebliss9646 жыл бұрын
Keith, If the Engineers Black Book states 7 degrees 24 minutes then this is incorrect information. The included angle of the #40 taper is 8 degrees 18 minutes. The 7-24 refers to taper being 7 inches per 24 inches which of course is the same as 3.5 inches per foot.
@georgebliss9646 жыл бұрын
Actually the included angle is 16 degrees 36 minutes,or 8 degrees 18 minutes per side. Sorry about that.
@rodbennett47906 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith, great channel! Apologies if you've addressed this previously, but there's one thing in this video that I don't get, and that's the high pressure lube. There's no relative movement between the work piece and either of centres, so why is the lube necessary?
@KeithFenner6 жыл бұрын
There is a tiny bit of movement, when the tool pressure is under load and or in free state, along with an ever so slight movement, because you never have a dead nuts alignment 100% around the swing, spindle to tailstock. ;{)------
@dennyskerb49926 жыл бұрын
I was wondering the same thing. Honestly I use it because he does.
@matter95 жыл бұрын
Keith Fenner that makes sense, and similar to a Joe 🥧 video where he demonstrates how a part can walk out of the chuck, but I also agree with Denny Skerb, but now it’s no longer blind faith!👌 Also thanks again Keith for the tools last year, kind of a touchstone period for me. Thanks again and glad to see you’re still kicking! Also I’m wondering about the bolt hole circle nugget you dropped- the two pieces of info needed to do the rest of the layout are the horizontal and vertical distances from center, then walk around the circle swapping x & y coordinates, and changing the +/- sign depending on what quadrant you’re in, like + +, + -, - -, - +, if moving clockwise from the top right / 1st quadrant… Derp- I paused the video so I could work out the problem and posted before I saw you revealed the answer 😅
@meandthemrs74035 жыл бұрын
I've never seen lube used on live centers. Only dead centers on an ID/OD grinder.
@dougbourdo25896 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the 'book review'. Though just a novice, I will get a copy to add to my library of reference. I was wondering if shortening the length of the tailstock would be helpful with the Whoremonics issue.

HI Keith, When you first put the stock in the 4 jaw I was curious as to why you didn't insert it father into the head stock. Is the through hole in the HS not large enough? (Maybe it was just the camera angle?) Great video as always, thank you for being an inspiration. Eric
@KeithFenner6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment! The chuck has a five inch hole and the spindle has a 3.125" hole, the part started out 4" ;{)------

Keith: I am not being critical or trying to give advice, but I AM curious. Why don't you complete part running between centers? Is 4-jaw and tailstock center inherently more accurate? Thanks
@KeithFenner6 жыл бұрын
You would not be able to remove the bulk of material like I do in part two with it between centers, a lot of material needs to come off and several processes before getting picky on the finish accuracy. ;{)--------
@johnlucaiii94956 жыл бұрын
Why are you putting high pressure lube on things that are not moving? Bearings on live center and fixed with a dog on the chuck end.
@KeithFenner5 жыл бұрын
Just because you don't see the movement, doesn't mean it is not there, when you see a shaft in the shop, in the lathe for hours of work, falls free because the center failed. you just have the habit. both ends so when you flip it, you don't have to grab the tube again. ;{)-------

@sunside793345 жыл бұрын
why not try a sharper insert with smaller edge radius and positive cutting angle first to lessen chatter, like DCGT instead of CNMG? and why didn't you perform a rough OD cut when the workpiece was clamped in the chuck and supported by live center in the first two operations? and don't get me even started with that angle iron or the sheet metal you used to maintain cutting force, looked like proper recipe for disaster.
