The famous Piltdown Man discovery occurred back in 1912, this was a hoax that lasted for 41 years until it was definitively exposed as a forgery in 1953.
The Piltdown Man fraud affected early research on human evolution immensely, as it led scientists down a never ending rabbit hole in the belief that the human brain expanded size before the jaw adapted to the new types of food.

Despite the fact it was exposed in 1953, didn't stop this 'fact' being taught in schools in the 60's. I live about 50 km from Plitdown, where to this day there is a pub called Piltdown Man, with an image of the'fossils' on the sign outside. Another aspect which held the study of anthropology back, were senoir ibcumbents within the discipline doing everything they could to prevent their theses from being disproved. I studied anthropology around the end of the70's, and it was made quite clear to us, that should we in our finals, stray too far from the accepted status quo, we would fail.
@loke6664

The reason for that is basically racism. Piltdown man showed that humans evolved in Europe while all other evidence they had either pointed towards Africa or Asia (you know, like Java man). We have extensive evidence for Africa now but there are still people who hates that and claim it to be fake. People did believe in the fake because it fit all the current theories back in 1912 and made Europeans feel better of themselves and that is why it persisted. I am sure there are still some conspiracy nutjobs believing it is real and the fossils from Africa are fake even to this day. In fact, I am almost surprised that "Q" never went for that one. ;)

Yeah because you were studying in university not participating in some ground breaking paradigm shifting research. When you learn things in university you are always on all sciences taught the baseline consensus view at the time. It's like me complaining that my computer science courses were judging my grade by how accurately I could demonstrate knowledge of what they taught me.

@@TheEvolver311perhaps you would like to look into the fact that borchadt " discovered" the bust of nefertiti that year,1912, and the Kaiser wilhelm institute soon became the centre for nazi falsification of history in general ,including, Egyptian hoaxes like "nefertiti"?😊

Paywalls have always been a problem :) But seriously, the public awareness gap was largely due to the limit of information transfer back then (no internet). Complicated by the fact that people only replaced their encyclopedia sets about every 20 years...

Conspiracy theorists enjoy being a part of the special group that has the secret knowledge about how Piltdown Man is a true fossil that mainstream archaeologists are trying to discredit because of their nefarious schemes to control the public. They will support any crap "science" that makes them feel part of a special group. It is easier to fool someone, than to convince them they have been fooled.

I've been a TV producer over 40 years and would like to offer some helpful advice. Your on-camera delivery is first rate, you really know the subjects of your short videos. By adding archive photos, maps, graphics, and renderings will enhance your narration and keep your audiences learning the topics and important points you are conveying. Now I know editing all those elements take more time but the results will greatly improve the understanding of the subjects you teach.Be well and please continue teaching science. You're an angel.

My father, Robert Claiborne, wrote many books on anthropology, archaeology, and linguistics. Two of them, although you’d have to buy them used, might interest you, Kayleigh, they are called Climate, Man, and History and God or Beast. Both a little dated by now but still good. I myself was going to be a physical anthropologist Before life intervened. When I was a little boy, my father used to regale me with stories about scientific hoaxes like the Piltdown man. That was his absolute favorite. He would talk about how sloppy the Response to Piltdown man was. How it was obvious, using a microscope, that the teeth have been filed down, and that the jaw has been reprofiled to fit. He often spoke about critical, thinking, and things like Occam’s razor. He taught me to question everything. A good philosophy that has served me well. Keep up the good work. I love your channel.

My first book on anthropology was a comparison between Piltdown Man and Java man. I think it was from the late 60’s. The first half of the book was the fake and it’s evidence and the second half on the validity of good science. (As I recall, it’s been a while since I’ve seen that book). Thanks for your videos, always enjoyed.

I loved these stories as a kid in the 70's. Late 19th to early 20th century frauds. The Cardiff Giant and the fake viking rune stone in Minnesota.
@loke6664
@loke6664 8 ай бұрын
The Cardiff man really makes you wonder how anyone could believe in that, it is like finding an old statue and believing it is a fossilized human. The Kensington rune stone is to this day still being discussed, it do seem to be a forgery but the runes do have a lot in common with runes from Gotland of the same period which the finder did not have access to which at least leave a little possibility it could be real. it is unlikely and proving otherwise would require new finds actually documented by real archaeologists, but there is still the tiniest possibility left. If it is a hoax (which seems likely) it is a far better job then the Cardiff giant. You also have the Hope stones that is super interesting. They were allegedly made by a survivor from the lost Roanoke colony. The first was found by one guy and after a university offered a cash reward another guy suddenly found a whole bunch of them suspiciously fast and he did make gravestones... All of them are considered hoaxes today, but the first one is actually linguistically correct from the time and looks way more real then all the others. It is possible the fist one is actually real and that the stonecutter read about the cash reward and made a whole bunch of forgeries to cash in which made the allegedly real one seem fake too. Stone artifacts have always had a bit of a problem, they are hard to date and therefor pretty easy to fake and one could wonder how many more fakes are in museums, thought to be real to this day.

When I went to grade school in Aurora, Illinois in 1955 we used a science textbook that still claimed the Piltdown man was a human ancestor. I guess it took several more years for the school district to realize it needed updating. I recall being pretty skeptical about a human who had a huge, out of place jaw. What possible use did that hominid have for such a strong lower jaw that met a normal weak upper denture? I'm amazed that a grade school kid could doubt the claim while so called scientists accepted it and textbook publishers put it in their books.

Such a frustration for Raymond Dart who found Australopithecus africanus fossils in South Africa, which walked upright but had small brains. I like to think that Arthur Conan Doyle, (Sherlock Holmes) had something to do with this scam. He wanted to pull off the perfect crime and was the only one to have really financially benefited from the Piltdown man by the interest it generated in his book The Lost World. This book featured an early man species very similar to the Piltdown one, (complete with associated artifacts) and came into publication in 1912, the same year these "fossils" were getting "discovered".

A very early and interesting quote pertaining to Piltdown Man that for some reason is usually overlooked and omitted in overviews of the subject like this video is that of American paleontologist/primatologist William King Gregory in 1914: "It has been suspected by some that geologically the Piltdown specimens are not old at all; that they may even represent a deliberate hoax.” I definitely believe Charles Dawson was culpable. FWIW, I don't rule out the possibility that the deception was perpetrated in tandem with Martin Hinton.

However, I suspect that there may have been a third party who planted the /faux/ evidence and guided Dawson to search where the hoax evidence was planted. If my memory is correct, Fr . P. Teihard de Chardin said, "It was not Dawson!" Perhaps he heard someone's confession. What better way to discredit the amature Dawson who over-rated his ability & importance.. I think Dawson is innocent of deception but the victim of a bad joke by a pro. Eventualyl, it is like someone wanted the frauds to be discovered (thinking this has gone far enough!), I regret what I have done and planted evidence for Dawson to find w/ additional frauds. Fr. Teihard knew who was culpable but never identified the culpret, IMHO.

That is the funniest and craziest true hoax story presentation I have seen (with hilarious Scientology reference). I had never heard all the details and…well…they are “jaw dropping!” 😂 (that was a bad joke)

Havent really heard of it. Good point though. Harmful to real archaeology yes. Thanks again. Great work.❤

Great episode with a valid warning about the allure of national/cultural partisanship in "science." I'm looking forward to the neanderthal episode. Thank you for these well-thought presentations, and thank you for being you :)
