Great oak and useful video, Tony! Thanks! Not many oaks (pre-)bonsai can be found in bonsai nurceries. I recently extracted an oak seedling (3-4 years old) out of a willow tree along the canal (Netherlands). When municipality workers cut it on a 2m height and the willow grows a lot of branches, then in time the cut acts like a flower bed for many accidental seeds brought by the wind or animals. And a day or two ago I managed to extract a birch from the similar willow - it has leaves 2-3 times smaller then the standard ones and a height of 2 meters - will try to air layer it for the forest composition.
@TonysBonsai
@TonysBonsai 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you've found a superb spot there Yevhen, and that birch sounds like an excellent tree with naturally small leaves. I've got an oak a bit like that with naturally tiny leaves. Good luck with the air layer. I've never tried it on a birch, so fingers crossed!

Hi Daniel. Yes, I must admit I am coming round to your way of thinking. I would have liked to make a couple of decent cuts last winter, but I think if I can just slowly improve the ramification over the next few years, it will have that character of an old English oak which is the ultimate goal.

A nice oak Tony. I've just completed the work of pruning back 40 of my younger oaks - but you ar right, it is very satisfying and relaxing. My 4ft oak will be due for pruning very soon as will my forest. I just hate how badly they get infested with greenfly. Another good reason for carrying out partial defoliation and leaf reduction :)
@TonysBonsai
@TonysBonsai 2 жыл бұрын
40 trees. Sounds like quite a project mate! As for the greenfly, none of my oaks have been bothered by anything this year. My beech and hawthorn are a different issue though. Black fly has been a real pest destroying loads of new growth and curling up all the leaves. A right nuisance!

Hi Harry. I was always led to believe that spring is the best time, but I recently saw/heard something by Harry Harrington saying that oaks are best lifted etc in late summer, so I'm unsure. In my experience early spring seems to work well for me.

Hi Scott. Yeah I agree. It's nice to be able to pass trees along to a family member. The pot says Errington Reay and Co ltd. Est 1878 and it is made as a plant pot of some description as it has drainage holes in the bottom etc. I'm not sure how old it is or anything else other than that though.

@@TonysBonsai Thanks Tony, I googled Errington Reay and found they are indeed a pottery store from Bardon Mill England who manufacture large oversized pots. I thought maybe it was an old 1878 made wash basin or farming item. Thanks for getting back to me to let me know.

@TonysBonsai
@TonysBonsai Жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes this tree is not fed early in the year and isn't repotted regularly, so in essence, it is being denied some of the things a tree wants to really thrive in the spring so the leaves stay small, then I feed it in the Autumn to give it strength.

Hi Graham. I've been hearing recently about people collecting oaks etc in Autumn, but I personally prefer to collect in early spring. I find I get the best results in late February. I've got a yard young oak tree, that has leafs which are covered in some white powder. I can't identify it, but it has already killed 2 of my 4 oaks. The leafs seem to be unable to continue photosynthesis and die like it's autumn. WTF can I do? I tried washing the leafs with water and a soft sponge, but no effect. Their white cover is back the next day.

My hawthorn, field maple and oaks suffer in the same way at this time of year. I know that it isn't to everyone's taste, but I just spray mine with a good quality anti fungal spray every few days, and the problem is gone within a couple of weeks. It's just mildew caused by the conditions/ time of year
