407 Rust Protection Treatment

One attempt to protect the underside of a car from rust. As my experience at this is fairly limited i decided to do it on a fairly cheap car a 2006 Peugeot 407 2.0 Executive.
I did the same process 2 years ago on a Honda jazz although that video was not as detailed as this
• Honda Jazz Rust
I learnt most of what i could by reading articles in practical classic/car mechanics magazine, the website rust.co.uk was highly recommended and has great informative articles on the subject.
It seems crucial to have the underside of the car as clean as possible, clean of grease and oils, have any salt neutralised before then going on to remove the rust and bring it back to bare metal.
Bilt hamber underbody and cavity waxes were used in the case of this 407 as they had more favourable postage costs to Northern Ireland. I am not a big fan of waxoyl as it tends to be slopped around the underside of a car being sold by some unscrupulous type to get rid of a problem. The jazz actually has one corner of a wheel-arch that was treated with the stuff after i left it to a bodywork place to have part of the sill welded. The rest of the car is resisting corrosion quite well but the waxoyl has lost its adhesion to the metal.

I admire your patience.....it must have taken a lot of time! The quality of your work is high standard;your Peugeot is ok for decades.... One remark...I used to work a lot on Citroen CX’s myself....when working on those cars you must be very aware of the weight distribution...65% to 70% of the weight rests on the front axle....left and right under the car were two strong spots where axle stands can be placed....these were positioned about 20cm behind the front passenger’s feet.....the car was almost in balance when supported on these points!! As I see you working on a two-post lift it makes me wonder how secure your car was....especially after removing so much weight from the back.... I know of a CX that tipped of a similar lift....it totalled the car.... Keep up the good work!! Greetings from the Netherlands,Henk Tulp.

Hi, thanks for the comment. It took a fair wee bit of time. There was over 15 hours of footage and that was only what got recorded. Hopefully this 407 will last now for a while, the auto-box will definitely be getting an oil change. You are spot on about the weight distribution, thankfully this 407 stayed secure on the lift but i remember when changing the axle on my mums xsara i had to have the Acrow props sitting ready and used a ratchet strap across the top of the back floor to each lift arm. A lift is a handy bit of kit but does require respect. Great to hear from someone from the Netherlands, do you still have any CX's? What is your roads like for rust, is salt used in the winter?

Extraordinary job man. I think is better done than factory. I admire steps you take with different products for better rust protection. Well done. Congratulation

Thanks for the comment, I hope it lasts better than what was on, although in fairness the factory underseal held on well enough for 15 years old it was just starting to reach the point where it is becoming less effective. It is the same type of polyurethane under-seal that seems to lead to most XM's being scrapped these days as the water gets trapped behind it so there was a fair effort made to remove it where it was failing.

excellent job. Why 407 ? That's what i would ask before i bought a 407. Most comfortable car i've ever owned. I only regret not having a 406 😀

This one i suspect needed a set of shocks in it, had a surprisingly firm ride. Although ive been in other 407s that rode better. My mate had a very early 2.1 TD 406 and within about 10 seconds of sitting in it i just fell in love, so it was a straight swap this 407 for the old 406, still driving the 406 at the moment.

@@peugeotCitroen2CV I can definitely understand the swap :-). In my opinion the 406 is one of the most beautiful cars i have seen. And being the old TD engine, is definitely more robust the the newer common rail engines, although the 2.0 HDI is quite a stable and reliable engine. If i would ever find a 406 that had the kind of love put into it like the 407 i bought (first owner, low mileage, regular maintainance) i would definitely swap it to 😀

A lot of older ones still on the road and the most extreme thing some need is an outer sill skin welding in usually the xsara picassos. Although im not sure the newer stuff is quite as good as it used to be. I sold this 407 and bought a 2013 C4 hatch, its a bit ginger in places underneath although still nothing structural.

@@peugeotCitroen2CV I have Peugeot 407 2.2i 2004 with manual gearbox, I did a lot in the car by my hands, also music through AUX with bluetooth. Nice car what I can say=). I have already painted many elements on the body and alloy wheels. Today it still drives well and is as good as the new ones. I'm thinking of keeping this car forever, and additionally buy an electric one.

Hi there, i am thinking of giving lanoguard a go, i think its a lot less labour intensive than having to bring it all back to bare metal but its really only for loose surface rust.

Not in a million years haha😂😂 far too time consuming and messy. Im also back at uni this year doing a masters. Although i think in the future i might try something like lanoguard that requires less preparation and just gets sprayed on every few years.

Haha not really too bad, im seeing a few neighbours 406es at the moment, admittedly ones used on farms and never washed. The most recent example i went to change an exhaust and there was no jacking points left at all. They are not bad considering the youngest 406 is now 18 years old. Bonnet leading edge and the sills seem the worst areas, any half decent 406 is usually worth patching up but there are some rough examples also.
