RIGHT - Sorry for having to reup - as someone rightly pointed out, annoyingly left blank space at the opening of the video. SO now - a big video today talking about Eisenhorn, and also showing off my Siege Studios Eisenhorn mini. I just will add also that for this I wanted to focus on the core 3 books for material even though there are others which touch on elements of Eisenhorn - just wanted to clarify that. Condensing all of that into one video was still quite the challenge so I hope it comes over well enough, big thanks to all your support - any appreciation in the likes is a big thanks from me :D

I've combed through a ton of channels and there aren't any 40k youtubers that are as good as Luetin. However I have found a smaller channel that's fairly new that puts a ton of passion into their videos. Check out Baldermort's Guide to Warhammer for more lore dives that have some surprising emotional punch to em at times. I go back and forth between him and Luetin. Oculus Imperia also has some decent vids. Especially on ancient terra.

I think it's a matter of scale. Chaos and heretics can be any where in the Imperium. By and large Xenos affect the outer worlds and fringe colonies. SO while Xeno's corruption and invasion is really important, it's important to the kinds of worlds no one cares about. I think the greatest thing the Ordor Xenos ever got involved in were the Tyranids. Finding them out, figuring out how they work and all that was a great service to the Imperium when the hive fleets started to roll in.

Personally, at the end of the books I SUDDENLY realized that Eisenhorn had been drifting towards radicalism for a long time, but I only acknowledged this very late because I was distracted by Eisenhorn trying to survive or solve some other matter at hand. Which I think indicates a "fall from grace" story very well handled.

1) keeps Glaw, might be useful later. (Puritan answer: he's more useful dead.) 2) keeps Malus Codicium, might be useful later. (Puritan answer: burn it quickly, so it's useful to nobody.) 3) give Glaw a body (Puritan: uhhhh... No. Seriously. Emperor's Mercy for his help and that's generous.) 3) binds Cherubael out of spite at end of book 2, using Codicium. (Puritan: You did what?) It was then that I realized that he couldn't be an Amalathian Puritan anymore. Everything else up to this point and it was rational, but the ending to book2 made it clear he was acting out of spite and taken his first steps in actual radicalism.) By the time book 3 rolls around, and it's clear he's barely treading water. The house of cards is crumbling all around him. He makes a great case study for the zealots in the ecclesiarchy who want to burn anything suspect.
@Ralndrath

@@badhras Yes! It was spite which drove him into imprisoning Cherubael. It makes me wince thinking about it as it goes against my pragmatic side, but I also empathise as I think spite is an incredible drive for many things (for good and for ill) and it's so damn human. His story is so well written in isn't funny.

Eisenhorn was a full blown heretic way before the events with the Titan and binding Cherubael and Verveuk. @@JustaGuy_Gaming Hive worlds are actually (usually) experiencing constant flows of traffic both incoming and outgoing. A single shipment error will not destroy an hive world because they make reserves for such occasions that can last a few years. Several subsequent errors where several fully stocked up universe class mass conveyor fail to deliver their cargos might cause famines but the local authorities will normally be able to just quarantine the lower hives from the upper. Now if this situation lasts for a few decades it will lead to massive problems and possibly destruction of the population but if you reach such a continuous amount of errors theres probably some outside force having a voluntary hand in the matter. "It seems like every Inquisitor get ousted at some point. They’re all heretics at heart." It's one of the basic tenets of the 40k lore. New inquisitors tend towards traditionalism. Old inquisitors, realising they're fighting a losing battle, seek ways to turn the table which invariably involve heresy.

The Eisenhorn Trilogy is quite possibly the very pinnacle of 40k lore. I will read any 40k novel written by Dan Abnett. Whatever he writes about, it ends up having relatable characters and interesting story-lines which do a good job of exploring different aspects of the 40k universe. His writing really brings the universe to life in a surprisingly believable way.
@TDBoedy

I think he's an ideal character to start off with for a live action series. You get a space detective that goes around hunting heretics and eventually demons. It's a good way to get a foundation on the Imperium of Man and where it is in that time. That his adventures take place across his entire adult life-span gives the story itself a sense of scale. It isn't just "there and back again" a la Tolkien - it's over the hills and through the woods burning down grandma's house as a side show. I can hope that they really play up the gothic horror aspect of 40k as well as the bitterness/noir that is this setting. Even in victory there is no joy.

I just read the series and this is my personal theory: eisenhorn took the saruthi necrotouk and has been hiding that from the reader in his accounts the whole time since the end of Xenos. Why: you will notice that when eisenhorn gets the mallus codiceum he never actually gives the reader an account of physically taking it. He mentions killing quixos... then later in an epilogue you see him using it to bind cherubael thus you infer he took it from quixos’ hoard. This lack of account is jarring to the reader, there are other “holes” in Eisenhorn’s stories in his accounts around the conclusion of certain events regarding chaos artifacts/entities. For example, in the course of the books, he goes into great detail of weapons he has, accounts of battles, etc but his account of leaving Pontius Glaw w the magos is starkly lacking. He just mentions he approves of the deal to give glaw a body but then just leaves. Unlike Eisenhorn’s meticulous descriptions of combat there is no description of what he agreed to give Pontius or how he is transferred to his new servitor body, there is no mention of the specific instructions he gave the magos. It is an oddly critical detail that is lacking in an otherwise incredibly meticulously detailed firsthand account and its absence struck me as odd. Similarly while being interrogated by the inquisition in book two, eisenhorn mentions his discomfort at getting close to being forced to lie when asked to confirm he is completely puritanically clean of heretical acts. He refers the the secrets he does not want known indirectly as “those things” (not exact quote but you get the gist), those things being the things he doesn’t want the inquisitors to know. We are lead to BELIEVE that he is worried about his previous interactions with cherubael looking incriminating, though from eisenhorn’s account I don’t see how. He never consorted with the demon they just met if you are to believe his 3 book trilogy account literally. The account in book two however never confirms what that nebulous “thing” that eisenhorn doesn’t want known to the interrogators is... we are just led to INFER it is the connection with cherubael. In hereticus when Eisenhorn must tell Madea his secret it never says what it is. He simply tells the reader he told her everything, lists off a few events like cherubael as examples but then leaves the rest of the contents of the secret vague. In Hereticus there are also a couple of moments where Madea in particular appears to pull other members of eisenhorn’s retinue to talk about concerns over eisenhorn. We are led to believe this is his usage of the mallus codiceum but once again that is not confirmed. Was his retinue privvy to something else eisenhorn did, that we- the reader of this first hand autobiography were not? Everything in the books is told to us in first person format. Keep in mind in the case of the Mallus Codiceum and Pontius Eisenhorn must be truthful to the hypothetical reader- both of those artifacts were used in ways that became common knowledge among inquisitors and therefore he could not lie about their origin. Many people saw the demon host or the book and would have noticed eisenhorn’s increase in understanding of the warp and so he could not really hide he took THAT book. With pontius- since pontius eventually got loose eisenhorn could not hide that from whatever hypothetical inquisitorial scholar is reading his account. So he is upfront with both of these items. Remember also that Madea mentions later to eisenhorn in private in book 3 (after admitting revenge for her father’s death is empty) that eisenhorn’s problem is that he does things pragmatically the right way but doesn’t consider WHY he is doing things. I think this is a hint, eisenhorn’s weakness that chaos is exploiting is his emotionless pragmatism. He gets so caught up in a task he crosses lines (each time for justified reasons) but is still inexorably edging towards the warp. I believe like Quixos eisenhorn is blind to the extent of his self deception and therefore his firsthand account that we the reader read is likewise warped resulting in the oddly missing holes in his account SPECIFICALLY regarding his pattern of leaving out specific details that would firsthand confirm with finality what happened with certain chaos artifacts/entities (pontius body, what he is afraid of the inquisition knowing while interrogated, and the extent of the secret things he tells madea by oath) And so the heart: the Saruthi Necrotouk. We have confirmation the human copy is destroyed: eisenhorn goes into deep detail how it burns in the fire gouting out of the space marine’s neck (notice again the specificity and finality in eisenhorn’s description of the human necrotouk being destroyed- he describes everything). He also confirms that he destroyed the Saruthi primer by crushing it under his heel. Then this is the critical part. Cherubael throws Eisenhorn the glowing blue alien Necrotouk and we have a confirmation Eisenhorn catches it. We have a confirmation eisenhorn enters the gun cutter that appears and then... NO DESCRIPTION of how the alien necrotouk is destroyed! He simply states, again in an indirect way, that all the beings and artifacts and the entire planet is destroyed by exterminatus. Thus we are led to infer the Saruthi Necrotouk was destroyed- and later in accounts from official sources we are told that the official account is both were destroyed (which once again would be biased because the official inquisition never witnessed what happened between cherubael and eisenhorn- the officials just had to take eisenhorn’s word for what happened on the planet surface). I remember this because I did a double take at the end of xenos and reread it several times. Here’s how it goes: 1. Cherubael has alien necrotouk 2. Eisenhorn thrown the alien necrotouk- now he has it 3. Eisenhorn gets in gun cutter. 4. Blank 5. Official report that both necrotouks destroyed I think he stole it and perhaps has been hiding away other chaos artifacts in other times when there were no other witnesses (or no other witnesses who could turn on him). He only mentions Pontius and the codiceum because he has to, these other hypothetical unmentioned chaos items (of which the Saruthi necrotouk was the first) eisenhorn might be collecting may even be hidden away from his own psyche (just like quixos)- the act itself something that he struggles to explain or accept. As a result he has intentionally or subconsciously left holes and misdirections in his personal account and fills the account with plausible explanations that we as readers are led to INFER is the reason for his actions. But he never confirms. And considering eisenhorn’s hyper detail oriented combat accounts this seems highly suspect to leave such critical details that “tie the knot” of the certain narrative like what specific body Glaw was given lead me to believe there is a lie woven into the whole trilogy If you have Xenos check it out, read the last section when cherubael and eisenhorn are facing off and the epilogue. Notice the blank?

I finished the omnibus like 2 hours ago (started a week ago). The very same thing about the saruthi necroteuch bothered me aswell, and I was very disappointed that it was not mentioned again. I was kinda weirded out by Pontiusses "overpowered" blade body. I remember Eisenhorn stating to the Magos on the mining planet that the body should only be able to do simple tasks like LIMITED movement and drinking. tbh, other than the assassination of Eisenhorns retinue (for which you can conjure up a different explanation if you leave out the inshabel death) there was no significance in Pontius being the villain at all. It could have been anyone and the story in "hereticus" wouldve still worked.

In the books it is implied that Chaos itself was aiding the Radical's plan, indicating the plan was likely to end in a Chaos victory when attempted by someone not competent enough to pull it off. A good analogy is the Great Crusade and one of its goals: destroying Chaos by replacing religion with Imperial Truth. The plan could have worked in theory, but Emperor's failure to pull it off probably worsened humanity's ability to deal with Chaos.
