When Sisters Of Battle got introduced in the late 90s I don't remember people having an issue. Maybe because they got introduced without changing lore. Just don't mess with established lore. This has nothing to do with misogony. It's just lazy corporate pandering.

@@eiseklompstra Don't play dumb, obviously a particularly mishandled inconsistency is gonna be rapped on a lot, especially being this new. What are people supposed to do, complain about age-old issues they have as if it were a fresh change? Like the video said, they could have properly handled the change - I know less people would be complaining if this was handled properly. A hint here, a small glimpse there, and so long as they focus on how lore-wise the idea is actually plausible, it should be fine. Video says it too; there technically isn't an actual requirement that the procedure requires male subjects. If GW played this right they could have had their cake and eaten it too, but instead they took the absolute worst approach, story-wise. I'm sure you've seen this already, but it's like if one day GW just posted "There have always been men in the Sisters of Battle". Uh, fucking NO???

More recently leagues of votann. Can you imagine if that release was just "no, there have ALWAYS been leagues of votann". There would have been the same slack jawed "wait, wut? No there wasn't!" response. Two key differences: one, they explained with the release why you hadn't heard about it before and gave in universe reasons as to how/why they got lost from common knowledge. The female custodes in the two page short story has such a different energy and vibe compared to their grumpy sad girl sisters of silences counterparts. Huge extrovert introvert energy. This is only extra stuff for me as someone that really really likes the SoS/Anathema Psykana, and have gotten books purely cause they focus on them like with Alaya. The SoS have gotten a lot of good lore/stories for how small a part they play in the grander scope of 40k.

When the imperium collapses, because unlike Custodes, whose entire thing is being "The Emperors Finest", the Sisters of Battle exist due to a loophole in ecclesiarchy law, banning the church from having men in an army but not banning women, making their entire reasoning for existence be "being women". Aside from two shreds of lore saying that the custodes recruit "noble sons" which is immediatly followed up by "they also recruit others who they deem strong or by other mysterious means" there is nothing making the custodes inherently male nor making some timeline defining change in the structure of the lore, like it would with Sisters of Battle. One could make the argument for Sisters of Silence having males in it, but as far as we know, almost all male nulls get sent to the culexus temple to be trained by the assassinorum, but if you really wanted to make it happen, you could.

It's BEEN mainstream for a while, but fans could handle it easily. But now that everyone's got SBI breathing down their necks to fulfill their shitty ESG quotas, well, fans can rarely compete with a company that big - unless a mass exodus happens, fans can't do as much damage or pay as much money as SBI can, so GW has to bow to SBI. Sad to say, but people probably, as some like to say, won't "vote with their wallets" because Warhammer40K is unique enough that they can't just go to something else that's similar.

You cant just say, "everybody described this building blue, but well it was an unreliable description". The changes have to make some sense, and the reason for the change has to point towards a plan, otherwise wee ge tthis female custodes thing.

Family legend said he called it the "blue house", so it musta been painted blue and someone musta lived here on this patch of dirt once. Neat, huh?" (The real explanation is that the grandpappy was colorblind and walking by the house reminded him that he could never see its colors and made him sad, so he called it the Blue House.) People seem to forget that seeing a custodes outside of the palace is either a life or death scenario or a once in a lifetime honor, and seeing one with a helmet off to tell their gender? Borderline never. Some people also seem to forget that the lore we receive has been filtered through people for up to 10 Millenia, but sometimes as short as a couple hundred years. If you tried to ask even a relatively well-informed person today what they knew of the neolithic cultures (roughly 10 millenia ago), they'd probably be just about as unreliable of a narrator. Hell, even ask someone about the renaissance and they'd be about the same level of reliability.

What they know and how they know it must remain zealously guarded secrets lest entire reason for being become rendered moot. It is said to be insanely expensive to make Custodians, but there would be people willing to pay those costs and use their new armies of Astartes killers to do heretical things. So they are not the same organization, but they often work along side each other because the Silent Sisters provide anti-warp protection on a level that the Custodes can't get from their augmented genome or protections built into their gear.

@@Henbot It's a fair conclusion to come to given only the art, but the distinction and internal division within the Imperium and its various forces is an integral part of the faction as a whole. That said, there is an in lore account of a Sister of Silence, someone with the pariah mutation (extreme anti-magic) but otherwise not notably augmented, was able to match a Custodian in a duel for an unusually long time... Possilby saying that her psykic null effect messed with how some of his enhancements worked? It wasn't explained that I know of, but it was a thing that happened.

Sounds completely plausible. You guys notice that every single new show has a same sex love story involved it? Same sex narratives are totally fine, and I have no qualms about them but when they put them in everything it seems so unnecessary and doesn't further the story or plot. It's like a checklist they have to tick off. I know this is probably obvious to everyone now, but when will people finally say enough is enough? The problem is that GW has a monopoly on the market - more or less anyway, Warhammer40K is pretty unique so even if SOME people leave you'll generally still have a healthy influx of new fans - and what does a new fan care about a recent retcon? They just got into the series and have no attachment to older lore.

But then, I’ve checked out of the current lore and I’m enjoying the universe as it was and still is, with the loving works and stories of the community. So I’m more intrigued to see them being the Emperor, female space marines and wheelchair-bound custodians in in the dying years of the company in about a decade- I’m not too stressed about the universe dying with them.

Except it is implied that those Primarchs are dead along with their legions, I mean there could be remnants of the two lost legions but those Primarchs are basically unknown in general and the Primarchs pretty much stop one another from even mentioning them. I mean Leman Russ is said to have a body count in terms of Primarchs........even though he hasn't actually killed any Primarchs, which leaves only the Lost Primarchs to be the ones whom he killed as is his function as The Emperor's Executioner.

The *latest* twist? We're 4 years and 2 doctors past that. We've got Bi-Generation. The return of an old face, Mrs Flood. If you're still stuck on a revelation that was discovered with help from The Master then I don't think it's a problem with the show. Technically if you only work from the TV shows for your canon, the Doctor hasn't been Gallifreyan for nearly 30 years. He was half-human on his mother's side. Maybe it's time to move on?

Sisters of Silence and Custodians were constantly together in the Heresy books, people didn't think that reference was for Custodes because it never was previously... and from Sanies' view, he has no idea what any of their titles or jobs are, just that there's a load of people in Gold.

For real. If they came out and said "we have decided to adopt new standards for diversity, equity, and inclusion for the WH40K universe, and this means retconning the lore to include more women across every level and station of the Empire, because adhering to these ideals is more important to us than consistent lore", then fine, so be it. People could make up their own minds about whether or not they want to support that decision and the company behind it. But nah, they have to pretend like the retcon is completely rational and unprompted, and everyone is crazy for suggesting otherwise. It's such a pattern with leftists in these situations. They can never be honest about what they're doing because they know people would largely contest it. So they always gotta come at you sideways, dissembling with semantics and absurd reductions, trying to gaslight you as the bigot, the idiot, the loser.

Every time they make a change like this they respond with things like "it was always there" or "it has always been this way". This is how they build the lore in universe, and it's how they have handled these types of changes for over 30 years.

First off, thank you for being one of the few rational, logical and level headed voices in the discussion. I don't think I'll ever be able to take the lore as seriously as you and other analysts do, but I do enjoy the work all the same. I dunno, maybe I'm just a jaded Gen Xer who has watched every IP grow to the point that it inevitably falls apart into inconsistent and incoherent nonsense, that I see stuff like this and my only response is just "...Okay then." and move on. Was it a good way for them to have introduced this change? Definitely not. But given how drastically the setting has changed over the decades, I just don't see how this should matter this much. ...Except the why has become increasingly clear. SOME people that are upset with this are annoyed only because of the clumsy and blunt way it was introduced, but from what I've been seeing in the community, that's mostly being parroted by bad faith actors who display consistently misogynistic behaviour, and are just upset because "Woke agenda!" Being annoyed about how it was introduced I can completely understand (even though to me it honestly seems like a drop in the bucket of questionable decisions they've made over the years) but the second any of this gets mentioned in any online conversation I've seen, the overwhelming majority of people upset by this flood the comments with rants about how GW has gone woke, this is the beginning of the end, it's all because of Blackrock, only 40k tourists like the idea and us real fans know it's dumb and impossible because *insert ignorant sexist argument here*, etc. So while there may be a point to be had here about a clumsy retcon, it's uh...kinda hard to argue that right now and not look like another one of the troglodytes. All the more reason to be happy to see you not go that route.

My main problem with this whole debacle has been the way that GW spoke about it in their Social Media post, and the lack of any explanation in the book. Adding in some paragraphs about them needing to bolster the numbers following the Great Rift and some noble females being found to be suitable for modified versions of the procedure or GW's Deus Ex Machina (Cawl) found a way to make it work on women too would've done wonders. The official stance of "it's always been that way", despite previous codices saying otherwise feels like they don't care about the lore, which realistically they don't - the lore is there purely to service selling the plastic crack to the masses. Will people walk away from 40K? Define "40K". If you mean the setting as a whole, then probably not. From a wider lore perspective, GW's unreliable narrator framing is a way for people to just ignore the bits of lore they don't like and have fun with the bits they do. Will they lose interest over time if the uniqueness of the setting gets diluted so it appeals to the mainstream? Possibly. At that point, GW should hope to have replaced these people with equally fervent fans who will happily build, play and collect stuff for 30+ years. If you mean building, playing, collecting models from GW's stores - then maybe. I know a several people who have already binned 10th Edition and moved over to OPR in my hobby circle. I also know others who just use non-GW miniatures because they prefer the look and the price point is lower. Then there's recasters and so on. Sufficiently motivated, I'm sure people can find a way to enjoy aspects of 40K that they like without giving GW any money.

I know people who said they were staying with 9th edition Custodes and not reading anything lore wise after 9th, meaning they are making stuff up now. Which to me is the best option for anyone who is not happy with the new version of 40k. When female Space Marines are introduced in 40k, albeit in 11th or 12th, then I'll keep reading until that moment comes. 40k is what you want it to be.

Space Marines are emplanted with gene seeds crafted by and from his own genes. The emperors genes are male. A male would be required to host the genes. Also, when making an enhanced human, male physiology is already predisposed to musculature, bone density, increased blood flow. Why would they start with a weaker baseline? The best IPs are ones that are controlled by a singular creator through the years. Tolkien's Middle Earth, Kentaro Miura's Berserk, Liu Cixin's Three Body Problen, etc... Once a large group of people get involved over many years the lore doesn't mean anything any longer and is just a vehicle of marketing the product and no longer art. This is what has happened for many IPs, Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Star Trek, MtG, Forgotten Realms, etc, etc,... The lesson to be learned is if you are a creator of an IP hold it close and greedily and guard it well. Once you let others in they will eventually ruin it.

It's funny, the easiest test is to see who shrieks at the word "gatekeeping". Anyone who recoils at the thought is, probably within 95% accuracy, the type of person who needs to be gatekept. If the idea of internal coherence and consistency upsets you, you're not really a fan of something. Probably just a trend rider or a tourist.
