4:38 Twenty years ago I was laid off working for a telecommunications company. I was 47 and age discrimination in IT is real. I received support amazingly from a letter of my former professor who told me 30 years previous that I would never be satisfied with a single degree. I went to school, got my MBA, then my doctorate degree, started teaching in universities, and now have been promoted to a Full Professor 20 years later. It is NEVER too late. Everyone gets a second act in their life. After Act One, where you are an actor in your own life in a play written by others, you have an Act Two, written and directed by yourself. Write your own script. Make yourself the hero. Then finish your play and take a well deserved bow.

As a watch collector, one thing I delight in doing is wearing a nice mechanical watch to work. I never worry about it. I bought them to wear. Others may not wear one at all or might wear a cheap one to work. I think its a mark of distinction and always wear one, even with jeans and t-shirts.

On insults, I 100% agree with your response to that. I would only add that when you ask the person to explain themselves, you have to look them dead in the eye. It’s intimidating as hell to a lot of people.

Agree 100%! After I got divorced and out of the military, I wondered why it seemed every year more and more people felt comfortable being disrespectful towards me. I was because I let depression etc stop me from respecting myself enough to stay in shape, dress properly, and over all carry myself in a way that demands respect conciously and/or subconsciously. That's how I came across your channel, actually.

This is a message a lot of men need to hear. When you establish boundaries be sure to do it calmly and with style, that really puts someone on the defense. Usually, they’re wanting and expecting an angry reaction. Don’t give them the satisfaction. Don’t lower yourself. The last point really resonates with me. It took me a long time to move up that ladder. I l have always believed that the higher up you are in society the greater your obligation to treat others of lower status with respect, dignity, and compassion.

I took your advice and just bought a £3000 mountain bike. Why not, I’m worth it 😏 Want to turn women off you straight away - smoke, smell of smoke and have your clothes smell of smoke 🤢. As a none smoker, smokers absolutely stink. Don’t care how good a woman is, if they smoke is a huge red flag and a no. Shows how such a low standard they have with their own health.

100% about treating service staff well. Just like some countries expect you to serve time in the military, I think people should be made to work a year or 2 in either retail or hospitality just to get a true sense of what it feels like and to ingrain in them the correct way to treat these people that work it as a permanent career.

Speaking truth to power, John. I've done this on a few occasions. I used to frequent a now more popular brewpub in my hometown until I and the friends I surrounded my/ourselves with notice the changes. We migrated to a taproom more aligned with our values and no regrets. I have made new friends in the caliber of your video. As you said, the key is to give the respect you wish to receive. I think many of us grew up with the respect is earned mantra but for myself, and I suspect others have concluded giving the respect will be either be reciprocated or as you said, a favor will be done for you. Great one, good sir.

Hi John, Great video. One of the most important messages ever delivered. 100% agree with setting standards for yourself and how you expect to be treated by others. It will command instant respect. At 56 years old I'm totally ok with thinning the pack of people in my life that can't or won't conform to my standard of respect. I've gone out of my way for many years to respect other peoples standards but not my own. That changes today! Life is short! Why wait! Also, for the 1st time in my life, this year on my birthday I treated myself to a birthday weekend getaway to Los Angeles CA. It felt weird but man it felt great. So much so that I'm gonna do it every year! I hope your message resonates with other guys out there that like me just accepted people's behaviors and disrespect. Thanks Jonh!

Love this message John! I don't see, though, what raising your standards or respecting yourself have to do with 'treating yourself'. It's nice to get the more expensive Uber or wine, sure, but you should expect respect from people regardless of what car you arrive in or what wine you drink. And, quite frankly, being financially responsible is a form of self-respect, because it keeps you in a stable position in relation to your future. So I would think twice before making a connection between 'treating yourself' and respecting yourself or demanding respect from others. I'm sure that if you saw some of your viewers' closets, you wouldn't tell us to go out and buy a new shirt, because we already have too many 😅
@40OverFashion

It’s not about the wine. It’s about treating yourself better and having higher standards for yourself. It starts with you and how you treat yourself. It has to start there.

Couldn't agree with this more! In a previous job role as an international trainer, the standard corporate dress code was jeans and a polo shirt. I ALWAYS made a point of wearing a three piece suit to the extent that I became known as The Man In The Suit. Not only did it change the way that I felt about myself, but in comparison to the way my colleagues were treated I got so much more respect, upgrades and was generally viewed differently. How you treat yourself has a massive impact on how others then treat you!!

This video is spot on. As a man, respect means a whole lot. There are times where you may have to swallow your pride, but overall, one has to demand respect. I also agree with treating oneself every once in a while. For example, I have a car project I need to work on and after I finish it, I'll go out and grab a nice meal to celebrate the completion of said project.

I am a (part time) martial arts instructor for the past 25 years and I tell all my students - "To get respect, you must first give respect" - respect is not just handed out, it is earned, additionally you can not respect another until you respect yourself. Something I believe the world is lacking as of late. And yes you and I deserve better, as we all do. It is up to each of us to seek it out and go after it. I truly enjoy your videos sir, much respect, you are appreciated. Thank you.

"Birds of a feather flock together". "You attract what you are". It's one thing when a friend gives you a hard time but someone you don't know or just met? If they get a little smartass going, personally I found if I just look at them for a few seconds w/ a confused look on my face and then ask, "I don't get it", it does take the edge off a little bit. If they double down and explain then I ask, "Why would you say that?" Another thing I'll say after a relatively new acquaintance takes a poke is simply, "interesting". When they ask what I mean by that I tell them it's interesting that we just recently met, they know nothing about me and yet they are still comfortable enough to make that kind of statement. Even if the person is too thick to pick up what you just put down, anyone else watching will see it.

You're going to find it's very difficult to better oneself if you surround yourself with negative thinking people. My ex-wife said everything would fall apart if I went back to school when we were married. It fell apart anyway. After the divorce, I got my degrees and now make 3x more than before, while traveling often for work and pleasure. I've seen more of the world and of the US than many, respectfully dating different women, experiencing multiple cultures... something I never would have been able to do had I listened to my ex.
