In many of my podcasts, I've used the Bridge City Toolworks KM-1 Kerfmaker to create exactly sized grooves and dados. It can be shrouded in mystery if you are just looking at the catalog. Come to think of it, it can be shrouded in mystery when you are reading the "user's manual".
In this video, I'll give you a tour of the KM-1, show how to effectively set the kerf using the actual cutters, and demonstrate its use on three random-thickness boards from the scrap bin. You'll learn how to use it in many situations on the tablesaw, router, mitersaw, bandsaw, and even the Bridge City JMP Jointmaker Pro.
Happily, the KM-1 is not a one-time product from Bridge City.

Frequent watcher, subscriber and 1st time comment. This video is a great example of why your channel is so good. Tool manufactures often to nice promo videos which leave plenty of "how would that really work" questions. Thanks for taking the time to share so many of these. As a Festool MFT and tool owner they are perfect but clearly they are just as good despite any tool. Great job.

Thanks for the post. I lucked out at an under-attended regional online auction last week and scored KM-1 along with a bunch of other high-end goodies by taking the time to visit the auction site on inspection day. This gem and a bunch of other tooling, etc. were thrown in bags and boxes, most mis-labeled, that those who stayed home could not possibly have identified. Definitely a good day at the candy store...

Hello, Thank you for the excellent video and the detail explanation on how to use the tool. I am so impressed I went ahead and placed order for both km1 and km2 as well as centering tool. Thank you and look forward to watching other future videos from your channel A.J

HalfInchShy, I know that this video was posted some time ago, but I stumbled across it only a couple of days ago, so this response probably won't get read, but nevertheless I felt I had to express my thanks to you. I made a wooden Kerfmaker back in 2009 after seeing items on Lumberjocks, and enjoyed the challenges involved in its construction. However, when I came to try it out, I just couldn't get the hang of how to use it easily, so put it aside - meaning to try again later, but never actually getting round to it. Whilst watching your video, and seeing your 'little jig', I realised that my difficulties had stemmed from the fact that my stop blocks were too thick! The 'step' on the end of the Kefrmaker could not slide over the stop block. Blindingly obvious now, but in 2009 I was probably in too much of a hurry (as usual then) to take time to identify the problem. I have now made a 'little jig', and purchased a Magswitch, and have successfully cut exact-fitting rebates ( dados), so thank you so much for your video. I also noted the techniques for dealing with various machines and with long work pieces, which answered a number of questions that had been shoved in the recesses of my brain hopefully awaiting solutions some day.

Informative video for sure. Where did you source the magnetic stop you used to enable the KM-1 to really be used?
@HalfinchshyWWing
@HalfinchshyWWing 7 жыл бұрын
You can get those magnetic stops at any woodworking store. I have 2 that came with a magnetic featherboard and 2 I purchased separately for other jigs (considerably stronger). So look for the featherboard as the magnets are removable. Very useful.

We will have Kerfmakers back in stock in Mid April. If you hit the button on the product page to "Notify Me when this product is back in stock", you should get an email when it indeed is. It could have gone in to your Junk mail previously. Thanks for your interest!

Great video. Is there a method you use to make or index to make grooves a set distance between them? For example I want to make a part that has 3 pieces 1 inch a part using either my festool router and MFT or my Bosch table saw. I like the little magnetic jig you created but unable to use with my aluminum Table saw top. On the festool router it only gives you a centerline to the router which then would have to be offset to determine start of groove. Is this the only way for the set up?

Hey Paul, I know this is an old video but wondered whether or not the Incra Fence on SawStop would allow the same ability? I’ve not cut any dados yet but it seems like it could be adjusted all the same.
@HalfinchshyWWing
@HalfinchshyWWing 5 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it would work fine. I just use the back of my fence with a magnet in a mini L-fence to mark one position and use it to set the second fence position. I'm certain you could do the same off the back of the Incra fence. Since it is more adjustable with a micro-adjuster (iirc), you could likely use it over by the micro-adjuster since you really aren't moving it more than 1/4" or so.

I appreciate the heads up. I never realized they had a schedule page. If BridgeCityMike would have mentioned it, I would have remained patient and held my comment. Seems like things were a bit beyond their control. Thanks again.

Thanks for a great video. I didn't have a problem getting mine. Bridge City isn't Home Depot or Rockler...on some things you have to be patient and persistent. The design and quality are outstanding. I think it is exceptionally bad form to watch a video on using the Kerfmaker and leave a message on how to find one for free. One of the things I like about BCT is that they have relationships with a lot of smaller foundries and machine shops in this country..instead of India or China.

James Morrin _. Bridge City Tools are great products, have a few. However, many were, and now almost all are made by Harvey Industries Co. Ltd., a woodworking machinery manufacturer based in China. They have had BCT products substantially made offshore for several years now. Still great tools, regardless of that fact.

Is that a Wood Whisperer push stick on your table saw @ 3:54?
@ben_r_
@ben_r_ 8 жыл бұрын
For the table saw example is he using the miter gauge with the stock running along the fence? Doesn't look like he's using a spacer to offset the stock from the fence. Isn't that a recipe for kickback?
@HalfinchshyWWing
@HalfinchshyWWing 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry to have missed this comment for so long. If it was a through cut, it would be a kickback danger. I have an offset spacer on my fence for exactly that problem. Here, though, it is a dado that doesn't release a piece. I suppose if the fence were horribly calibrated and pinched the piece, it would fight you a bit.

The KM-1 can't go to 4", but there's a new one in production right now (so I think it can be pre-ordered, not sure). The new KM-2 can go to 4" wide

There's no button labeled as such. What you have is "If you are interested in purchasing this tool, let us know by clicking here to add your name to the sign-up list" - & - "We will make this product available for Pre-Orders when and if we receive enough interest. Click the sign up statement above to join the list." I've done this "Alert subscription has been saved" appears. I have no junk mail, just rules that route BCT mail to a folder. I've clicked again, hope to be notified. I'd like to buy.

And, if you have a 3D printer handy, try this out to make your own. Works just like the more expensive one in metal but with somewhat larger offsets for stop blocks 3/4" thick: www.thingiverse.com/make:455895

@thatguythatdoesstuff7448
@thatguythatdoesstuff7448 5 жыл бұрын
There's two jigs for table saw setup, and neither are necessary. One to calibrate the tool for kerf your blade makes and one for moving the fence. You can skip the kerf jig and set up the tool directly off of your blade. But you have to reference the kerfmaker against the fence somehow, that's the entire point of the tool. He already explained just clamping a stop block to the fence rail.

I too have never used or even touched KM-1, but I understood the demo perfectly after the first machine iteration. Perhaps you should watch that first part again and try to visualize how the tool works as you watch. The elegance of the tautology upon which it is based makes it a little much to take in the first time. (As for "all over the place," imagine Paul had shown you in detail how to make a golf swing, and then followed up by hitting a driver, fairway woods, and some irons to illustrate the universality. If you didn't digest the swing lesson, the other demos would indeed seem "all over the place...")

Worst thing about this tool ... you can't actually buy it. I rarely buy new (not used) tools, but this is one of those things on which I'd pay the overblown seventy five dollars plus shipping tag. My name has been on their "list" for who knows how long. I guess they just don't have enough interest in the KM-1 any longer to actually make it.

I think this could be made much clearer -- use your video rather all those words. You did not adjust the kerf for a normal table saw blade -- perhaps the most useful; nor did you adjust the kerf for your Jointmaker saw. you did not show adjusting the kerf for the router bit either.
