Awhile back, I did a video just on the leather sap and a lot of people were calling it a blackjack. Though the concept is similar, blackjacks are different than saps. #selfdefense #blackjacks #leathersap

Had an uncle who was a detective in New Jersey back in the day. He had more fight stopping results with a black jack or sap than anything else. He made sure he never struck someone in the head because he said with adrenalin pumping, you could easily cause enough head trauma to kill someone. He always went for the collar bone or a joint and that stopped fights almost immediately unless someone was drugged out of their mind and felt no pain. Then all bets were off.

I purchased a leather slap in the early 70s as a Deputy Sheriff and was told they were not allowed. Gave it to my sister in law...kept it in the house in case. I got this Device after my grandpa a Georgia State Prison Corrections Officer told me how an inmate attacked him with a steel bar and broke his arm but managed to stop the attack by drawing his leather slap from a back pocket and knocked him out. Yes he went for the head as the inmate was trying to kill him. I would not mind having both devices as they are classic old school police items used for decades. Laws can be odd and confusing and depend on where you reside. A shot from my .45 or 10mm as an example or any firearm is lethal and a strike to the head by these can produce the same results but to an arm or shoulder it can stop an attack but likely would not be deadly. Interesting review of these classic items. Oh my leather slap was a larger version

My dad carried a blackjack often when be was in a job where he had to make a lot of cash deposits in bank night deposits. He was always watchful and spotted people hoping to ambush him a couple of times and avoided them. They would have had a nasty surprise. Dad was a small man, but an experienced combat veteran from the Korean War in the 45th Infantry. Engagements very often devolved into hand-to-hand fighting. Dad always seemed a gentle man, but he was combat proven many times and came put the survivor. So I will say that based on his informed choice, the blackjack must be deadly.

I respect laws, at least most of them, but regardless of legality if someone is trying to take my life I'm going to do whatever I have to do to diffuse the situation. Sometimes the law isn't in our favor but like I said and I'm sure you say it as well, Daniel, do whatever you have to do to protect your life in a life or death situation. Everyone has the right and should defend themselves in a life or death situation. Remember, your attacker doesn't have your best interest in mind. Thank you for the video, Daniel and God bless you. 😎👍

Back in the day as a young COP working the projects of Philly I was ALWAYS glad to have my blackjack in my back pocket and yes it had its own specific pocket made in the uniform pants just for it, unfortunately those days are long gone for many police departments if not all, great video!!

I was one of those ones you spoke of that had commented, I appreciate the video. I had asked you simply what was the difference between a slap jack it up, like Jack if they were the same or different. A good friend of mine, who worked for the Baltimore county police department back in the early 90s had one that was round and not flat. It had a little bit of flex to it.

All the older street cops I've known had them, and all reported them to be dramatically effective. There was one who was SEPTA Transit PD in the '80s and into the early '90s that had to sap people so routinely he'd actually wear out and break them. Mainly he was using the traditional flat sap along the lines of the Bucheimer Texan. This pattern was made by a number of different manufacturers and is still available. The quality of the old saps and blackjacks was generally mediocre at best. I've taken some apart. They seem to have often been made to be essentially disposable, using different bits of scrap leather left over from other products. Today's versions seem to usually be much better quality. The soft loaded sap filled with shot seems to be getting very little attention now, though I feel it may be the best one for delivering a stunning effect without breaking bones. But they all work. The hard loaded slungshot is probably the most lethal of the bunch, followed by the hard load blackjack.

Either one is an effective fight stopper/compliance device when used properly (non lethal application). The sap does less damage because of its flat shape and is more comfortable in the pocket. If one was available and used in many of the videos we see on YT when the suspect is fighting with the police, the affair would be shut down much faster, with less chance of injury to the officer(s).

In my neck of the woods both items are ilegal to posses. However a medieval style coin pouch is not. It works on the same principle as the slapjack. Depending on the amount of change it may pack a little less punch. The coins must be accessible with reasonable ease and noone is even questioning it. The impact device is a good middle ground when a knife does not seem appropriate yet.

I have been watching for a while and agree with most of what you say. I conceal carry a bowie knife and have a large book in my carry bag as a shield from slash and stab. I also carry 2 of the $5 fix blades from walmart as backup and general use. I carry 2 because I sometimes give one away. The last time I gave one away it was to a girl in her 20s that was groped on a city bus. I protected her first then gave her a knife. I would love to see you review some of the cheap knives from walmart. I personaly am a fan of the $5 fixed blades.

One bit of advice from a retired attorney, even if you use one of those in a jurisdiction where it is legal to carry (in the majority of jurisdictions it is not legal to carry) with a few jurisdictions allowing legal carry with a CCP, be very judicious in its use. Remember, there is an excellent chance your actions are being recorded. Those are instrumentalities that are capable of causing serious bodily injury or death. A blow to the neck or higher can be construed as aggravated battery or whatever nomenclature that jurisdiction uses. Why, well they could argue excessive force, asking why you used a high blow instead of a lower strike to repel the attacker? So much depends on the attitude of the DA office. Believe me, they will spin it six ways of Sunday against you if they so desire. This is why pepper spray is so important. It is non-lethal and should be the first line of defense if appropriate. It is all situational. I can almost guarantee you will be sued in tort where the evidentiary standard is much lower than criminal, for compensatory and punitive damages (pain and suffering) even if you are found not guilty of any criminality. If the pepper spray does not work and you have to use a more lethal form of force against your adversary (whatever form of force it is), you have an affirmative defense, that you first attempted to use non deadly force to stop the attack. An individual's actions have to be reasonable. The law follows a reasonable person objective standard, whereas the individual must act as a person of ordinary intelligence and prudence. The courts and the legal system are not an enjoyable place to find oneself. Better have a large war chest to finance your legal battle. Best to all.

I had a similar comment on his last video on these, about inadvertently admitting to "intent to harm" when carrying anything they can call a weapon. Now, I'm not an attorney, though they were usually in court with me. Not lately, thankfully! But, you have to be careful what words you use in certain places. Something as simple as "It's a dangerous neighbourhood " can get used to prove you were carrying something with the intention of using it to cause bodily harm. But, you're absolutely right, you don't want to stand before a judge if you don't have to. Good advice.

Thanks, good video. If you live in a jurisdiction that prohibits weighted bludgeon like saps, there are coin purses made to work as one. Carrying coins in a bag is legal everywhere. A lock in your pocket with a bandana through the shackle can be instantly disassemble d bypulling on one end of the bandana, or drawn for use by pulling both ends simultaneously. If force was justified, the lock was just a weight to keep your bandana from slipping out.

Thanks for the video. The obvious summary of the differences is that the blackjack is the same strike from all directions while the sap has a flat side and a sharp side. If I understood correctly, the blackjack has a circular spring to keep the force equal from all directions while the sap has some kind of flat spring. Maybe each is sometimes made without a spring and relies on some elasticity in the leather for any springiness. Maybe I misunderstood about the springs entirely. You make the case here that a blackjack is always heavier. I'm a little more skeptical of that assertion. I wouldn't be surprised if a few people have made lighter blackjacks at different times for different purposes. A few of them might be as light as many saps. From a use point of view, one difference might be whether the individual user is capable of striking as quickly with the blackjack if the blackjack is heavier. With the adrenaline rush of a fight, a fourteen ounce blackjack might not feel any heavier than an eight ounce sap. On the other hand, maybe some people really are faster with a slightly lighter weight. That's part of why I wonder whether some people have made lighter blackjacks. Maybe they like the blackjack design but want to throw faster strikes. I would imagine that the blackjack requires less skill because the strikes are omnidirectional. A sap strike at forty-five degrees might end up being useless as the sap tries to twist in the user's hand. A flat strike has one very clear value, and an edge strike has another clear value. Hitting at another angle might not be as valuable. I'd want to train more if I had a sap. From a legal point of view, most states that outlaw one are going to outlaw the other. In that sense, they will be the same most of the time. To the extent that one can improvise one or the other, legality may be a matter of disguising the function and telling a good story to a police officer. Because of my health, I don't think that I'll ever have a chance to serve on a jury. If I did, I would want to be an influence towards stopping wrongful prosecutions of people who acted in self-defense. If a person is justified in using a sap, blackjack, knife, or anything else in self-defense, then I would vote "not guilty." I would do everything I could to avoid being bullied by the prosecution into convicting someone just because he or she acted in self-defense. If I could find a way to vote "not guilty" on every charge, I would. We cannot optimize our society for both good people and bad people. If we don't allow the good people to defend themselves against the bad people, then we will have a bad society.

Ive researched this actually. Saps and blackjacks are illigal in my state. New York. However after I learned some techniques for using a sap. I found What makes a great sap, is a leatherman multitool in its case. You can open the case. Hold the open end. And it will hit hard. And work just like a sap. And btw. Lucky # sleven was a great movie :) also. It's not illigal to carry a leatherman multitool in a nylon case....

i think that there is an agenda to imprison people in the US and they will really focus on the legality of things which support their agenda. i live in california and there are knife and gun laws, if i do use them in a self defense situation i’m more likely to use lethal force just so that i get charged for a federal crime instead of by local jurisdiction because federal laws protect my right to bear arms and local laws do not. a few years ago i was in a situation where a felon with a gun who i had never met was trying to kill me so i cut his femoral artery and called him an ambulance and turned myself in but i got to jail and they told me i was going to do 15 years for assault and battery with a deadly weapon. basically nobody expected him to live and then he woke up and didn’t know that they had me in custody and his story didn’t match the situation at all so then detectives said that “there wasn’t enough evidence to prosecute” so i got out of jail with zero charges…. doesn’t end there. the guy who attacked me only got charged with possession of a firearm and before his court date he tried to do a drive by shooting on a homeless shelter in spokane and got caught did seven years and now he’s out. but i had to leave northern idaho because even though i didn’t get charged with anything i am a permanent suspect in a case which is never going to close where i “assaulted and battered” this guy with “a deadly weapon” so the local police department targeted me to where i was getting pulled over about every day for a couple of years and it was pretty toxic like i would be a hundred percent sober and have to do these submission tests/field sobriety tests as they destroy my truck and physically threaten me on a regular basis so i moved away and now i don’t have to deal with that anymore but if the felon with the gun who tries to murder random people had died i would have got fifteen years…. and that wouldn’t make me wrong either, i should protect myself i didn’t deserve to die i didn’t choose to be in that situation and that’s how easy it is to spend fifteen years in prison.

Perhaps people are thinking the police are standing there watching you use one of these things while you're getting attacked? Most likely not, you're probably alone. The convienant thing is, these are small enough to carry in your pocket and if you find yourself in a situation...? Well, it's quick outta the pocket ... brap! brap!.... maybe one more if he hasn't gotten the message? Then, it's back in your pocket or you wipe it and toss it, if you choose to wait around for the cops, your call. Use common sense though ... you can get a new one down the road. All I'm sayin'. Whoever tells you that you have to play by the rules when you have to defend yourself, does not have your best interests in mind. The key to any prosecution of these things, will always be if you were "excessive ", or "intent to harm" type things. Adrenaline is one hell of a drug, so just keep your cool and say as little as possible. Best not to have to use it at all at the end of the day.
