This video was made for me by a good friend- it is of a job I did earlier this month. The customer wanted to be a part of the process and I feel that every time you can leave someone a little more knowledgeable than you found them, then you should. :) 42" DBH Poplar tree fell whole with masdaam rope puller, This tree was a true beast!!!!

Fun fact: there is no such thing as "tulip poplar". There are tulip trees, and there are poplars. Tulip trees are of the Magnolia family, not Poplar. Gotta love the maasdam!

We like your presentation style a lot Mr. Bettis. There is no BS'ing about, or fakey melodrama. I don't mind the time it took, as I enjoyed spending that time with you guys in the Georgia woods. You got the job done on a very big tree, and I learned just what I needed to about using the rope puller. I've got a giant liveoak to pull away from a house out here in central Cal., I reckon the Maasdam is going to help. Thanks for putting this video together for us. Cheers.

very good job and presentation! I like the way you back up the Masdam with another line and the way you used the portawrap. The only thing I would possibly add is that I often put a big loop with a rigging line in a high crotch: before I tie the loop with a double fisherman's I put a ring on it, then run the working end of the masdam rope through the ring and anchor the working end to a tree to double the pull of the masdam. The ring works as a pulley to reduce friction and the masdam becomes extremely powerful. I've never seen stress on the masdam rope and have pulled over some big leaners this way.
@robertbettis6552

hell yea thats a great idea man. i never thought of the ring idea... i appreciate you watching my video.
@migueljose2944
@migueljose2944 4 жыл бұрын
@@robertbettis6552 Good deal. Another advantage to the ring on the loop is that you can anchor the masdam rope to a different tree than the masdam itself which gives you a "v" and the tree will fall in the middle. (my wife feels a bit safer when she's cranking but obviously if you use long enough ropes it doesn't matter) I can tell by your video you have a very good pace and know what you're doing. I had some monster tulip poplars like that.. Two of them were about 40 inches DBH. On September 7th, a tornado did me a favor and removed them for me. Turns out both were hollow. Odds are I'd have squished myself trying to fell them. I just wish the tornado hadn't uprooted the rest of our 18 acres. Lost 85% of our mature trees. Thanks for the video showing the use of this tool.

I can understand the backup, if you were unsure of the breaking strain of the rope passing through the Massdam. But considering the tree size and you had enough rope. Why didn’t you use a re-direct via pulley.

Exactly. I never pull in line with the tree being felled. The only thing anywhere in the path of the tree coming down is a block. I'm crankin the maasdam 90 degrees off the block and out of the fall zone.

What was the knot you tied at 1:15 (maybe you called it a butterfly knot)? Why not just tie a bowline on the bight? Seems like it would be easier. Also, what is the reason for the repeated goosing of the throttle while cutting the tree? Also, I was surprised how long it took you to see the tree was falling before clearing out. It was at least at 45 degrees before you looked up and sprinted clear. I'm super paranoid when cutting down trees. As soon as I see the back cut start to widen, that's when I bolt. Glad ya'll dropped this one safely. It was quite big!

thanks for watching the video. no i sure havent . ill check your channel out and see if you show it. i guess the advantage vs. the porta wrap would be not having to unwrap your wraps on the porta wrap. capturing the progress as you pull everytime!? comment more on your setup im interested to see a different setup than what i do.

Robert Bettis I will be happy to make a video about it, but all it is a basal tie with a pulley, biner and friction cord, then I run my tail up about 20 to 30 feet onto a hand ascender and pulley which gives me a 2:1 advantage all the while when you pull the tail, the hitch you choose will capture all the progress at the basal tie, if that makes sense.

You achieved exactly what you set out to do ! What can anybody say hey your back cut was a tiny bit high but hey , a high back cut can hold back a fall on a conventional gob is what I have found , but I am not Criticising just positive feedback I am friend not foe 💪👍 question :- I saw you using a Yale xtc fire 16 strand on the maasdam winch ? Does it work does it grip have you ever had trouble with slip ? I only ask because the manufacturer recommend 3 strand 1/2 inch which is something we would never use in the uk 🇬🇧 ? If only the Maasdam was fitted with a spool that accepted 16strand 24 strand bull rope But it seems you have achieved that ! Thanks for great vid thanks keep safe 💪👍
