A really solid, clear explanation. Bravo! Most people don’t get high (stoned, drunk, etc), at least on a deep level - deep down - because it’s fun -but because they are trying to escape suffering. It’s a band aid on an open wound - and often just makes things worse. If I have a drink I do enjoy it - the taste, etc. - but after a point, the rationale for consuming changes, so I limit myself.

I was a long term heavy stoner and the reason I liked it so much was because I think it got me into a zen like flow state. The issue is that even if it might temporarily do this once you sober up your mind is in an even murkier place than before which leads to just wanting to be stoned any time you possibly can. Also the more you smoke the more this zen state happens less and the reverse starts happening while stoned which is an insanely loud and paranoid mind.

i've never sat while high, but i've sat with alcohol in me, and the over-riding thing for me is how distracting it is. it makes it so much harder to just do the practice. its like voluntarily listening to music during it, or having a vibrating cushion, it just fires my brain off in a way that plays havoc with 'thinking not-thinking' etc. But i also agree, if i haven't sat and i need to, and i have it in my system, i always will. In a way the experience of doing it, reminds me exactly what it does to my brain and in some way adds to my relationship with alcohol (in a positive way)

I agree and appreciate everything said here. LSD for me was beautiful. From life altering terrible trips to a peace induced life. But it all led me to the cushion. To remember the kingdom within, the city with no buildings for dust to collect. Nowadays I still smoke a lot of weed. I feel conflict with this whilst very content with my practice and peace. I feel one day I will shed this habit as well as I have slowly shed cigarettes and alcohol. Wonderful videos thank you

The High state of mind is definitely unreal. But it may help you understand, that your so called "normal" state of mind is not real either. But...it also may do the opposite. So what we really should do is be careful. Thank you, Brad, for this very little talk you shared with me :)

The "debate" between drug users and Zen practitioners comes up, I believe, when Zen emphasizes enlightenment EXPERIENCE, that is certain experiential moments. Drug users say, "hey, my drug does that." However, the trajectory of Zen is to the much more quiet, profound, and everyday understanding: samsara = nirvana. No drug can replicate that.

While I agree completely with what you've said, the followers of Shiva that are ascetic yogis in India up to the present time have been smoking weed, aka...Ganja, Bhang, Chillum for centuries. The mantra of Marijana in India, for those who may be interested is: "Om Shiva Shankara Hari Hari Ganja". Ultimately you should be able to meditate, in any state of mind, but I can't do it. My mind instantly wanders off from the present moment. Some people can.

The late conservative British philosopher Roger Scruton wrote a book on the philosophy of wine called "I Drink, Therefore I Am". In the book he asserts a fundamental difference between intoxication and drunkenness: intoxication is a state of consciousness, whereas drunkenness is closer to a state of unconsciousness. Such a fun distinction, especially if you want to think about the thinking about drinking wine.

"Low--ri--duh is a little higher...." Classic. No! Dead loss! Do not meditate stoned. I have tried it. And was miserable. My usual monkey mind was suddenly occupied by an entire brood of Sasquatches, and I experienced no peace of mind of any kind. And this is coming from one who spent the better part of his senior year of high school either stoned or drunk. Yes. I inhaled. Happily. But the lesson was learned: Any form or meditation should be done stone sober, sculpting the "buzz" with the moment and nothing else. Great discussion, mahalos! 🤙🧘‍♀️

I think its easy to throw the baby out with the bathwater here. I wouldn't do Zazen intoxicated but there is a place for a skillful and respectful use of these substances. Skillfully used they can be used to heal trauma, break a deep depression. Ironically they can even be used to heal addiction. I think Terence Mckenna is and was a bad ambassador for Psychedelics.

Shrooms is what got me into Buddhism. I think shrooms can be a spiritual tool if used correctly. A lot of the revelations I've had on larrrrge doses are parallel with a lot of buddhist teachings. Impermanence. Non-attachments. Tathata. Nothingness. "I am a rock". Pretty much the whole Diamond Sutra is what can be seen on a high dose mushroom trip.

What’s the difference between your revelations and your delusions?
@gunterappoldt3037
@gunterappoldt3037 2 жыл бұрын
The key-question is less, in my opinion: Can I get "alternative" insights by transcending the "natural attitude" (Schütz, Berger/Luckmann), whereby the "triggers" may vary? Yes, you can, the possibility is given. It´s rather: How reliable, valid, and sustainable are they -- and what adverse effects are connected with certain methods (and performances)? -- Timothy Leary and his collagues, i.m.o., made that clear, too, at least during the times, when they still where doing serious scientific studies (yet, I don´t know if their papers, books, etc. are still publicly available, some re-reading might be interesting). Among the "contraindications" regarding Zen, speaking of Zen-diseases (禅病), there is the warning that, under certain circumstancies, and dependend on individual dispositions, Zazen can get addictive (with showing of symptoms similar to the phenomenology of the use of psychoactive substances) to some practitioners (which would run counter to the basic "liberational" intents). True story! Anyway: Handle with care! That´s what I take from this.

@CaptMang
@CaptMang 2 жыл бұрын
@@gunterappoldt3037 I think the insights have been pretty reliable. Example: don't hold on to attachments, compassion is energy, developing discernment, everything is one, the illusion of the self, etc... A lot of people "come down" after a trip, but if you meditate and reflect on the experiences, the trip never ends. Human perception is a controlled hallucination (according to neuroscientists); and sometimes having an uncontrolled hallucination (shrooms) can help you see things through a lens of suchness. I learn something new every time I trip, and most of the time there is a buddhist teaching that runs parallel.
@gunterappoldt3037
@gunterappoldt3037 2 жыл бұрын
@@CaptMang If I remember right, T. Leary once called Dr. Hoffmann´s Lyserg-Säure-Dimethylamid synthetic-extract a "religious drug", because it, tendentially (i.e., varying according to dispositions and circumstances), induces "religious" - however one my define "religiosity" - experiences. This also implies, among other things, a certain "confirmation bias". So, for example, if one is inclined to Christianity, one may have visions of Jesus Christ, or, if one is more inclined towards Buddhism, one may have visions of direct/authentic insights into the Dharma (non-self/oceanic feeling, fleeting world, trans-lingual altered states of consciousness/mind-being, also some mild/strong "megalomania", etc.). NB.: One of the basic substances comes from the so called "mother-corn", a colony of fungi which befalls corn/barley/wheat. It can cause some special symptoms in people which, e.g., have eaten infested bread (because the fungi are resistant against heat). In the middle ages, in Europe, people did not know the bio-chemical background. They only noticed the symptoms and explained them using their medieaval "matrix", which was highly charged with half "pagan", half Christian "religiosity", and, among other things, produced correspoding works of art, namely paintings (e.g., the bodily symptoms "projected" onto the "suffering Messiah"). This might even be generalizable regarding the human mind-set and culture-building as such, so that, e.g., the ritual drink, called "soma", may have influenced the whole fabric of the "sanatana" (vulgo Hinduism) in significant ways (and "religious drugs" still seem to be widely in use in India). And, another example, diverse "shroomings" seem to be "mirrored" in certain features of Maya-arts (architecture, paintings, designs, etc.). The origins of "religions" as such may even be connected to "substances, giving visions", "promoting Communitas", and so forth. This all makes really for an interesting field of study, i.m.o., but it is also -- one may/can/has to regret it for some valuable reasons (Dr. Hoffmann expanded on these, and others also did/do) - still heavy burdened with "taboos", some of them more reasonable than others; it still seems to be something like a "mine field". I would characterize it, in a "value-free descriptive" manner, as "multidimensional and polyvalent" -- and deep(er) knowledge about "al that stuff" as beeing quite significant for a (more) correct understanding of the Conditio humana. PS.: As far as neuroscientists are themselves human beings, their claim is self-contradictory (or, from an alternative perspective, Arahat-ish). They posit themselves, -- inside-looking-out outside-looking-in, -- like divine, transhuman inhabitant´s of Plato´s "heaven of ideas". That is their share of "religiosity", I guess.

That story is funny about the nephew! I feel like that nephew. I have hemiplegic migraine, which are like strokes and paralyze me and reduce my speech and in great throes of nerve pain that I don't think most people know they are capable of pain-ing! Weed is helpful. Weed also makes alterations, like you say. It can make sitting difficult! I like to meditate in the morning before or right after breakfast, but always before cannabis or coffee which helps. It feels like a very unwieldy tool for equilibrium. And as such many of the Neurological medications I have tried in my life, also unwieldy and decision-frying side effects. And sometimes my spine in meditation feels like an unwieldy tool 🤣🤣!

That's interesting. I'm sorry I didn't see this comment until just now (9 months after you posted it!). I, too, am troubled by frequent and severe headaches. I don't know if they're migraines or cluster headaches. Different doctors have called them both. I didn't smoke any weed at all for years - from about age 25 until I was in my 40s. I tried it again in my 40s because I thought it might help with my headaches. But it only made me high... with a headache. Which was worse than having a headache while sober. But I do see how cannabis can be useful medicinally. I'm glad it's helped you.

If into meditation, I would advice magic mushrooms because it doesn't make you sleepy and makes you enlightened more effectively then any formal meditation practice. Just speaking from 30+ years of meditation experience. If you enjoy weed though, nothing wrong with it I think. I found weed lessened the beneficial effect of mushrooms. I just use mushrooms now. Soooo much better then weed or alcohol I find.

I'm absolutely not an advocate of mixing Buddhism and drugs and entirely agree with Brad on the topic. However, out of curiosity, I like experimenting with shrooms and other psychedelics. The other day, I took a very large dose of shrooms and the only way I found of making the experience bearable was to go do zazen. The shrooms didn't enhance my zazen mind you. Zazen only allowed me to get through that experience much easier.
