Hi there, horror heads! Today we have an absolute treat in store for you. We will be exploring all the Lovecraftian monsters that you can think of! Howard Phillips Lovecraft, an American author, is now widely regarded as a forerunner of modern horror fiction. Lovecraft was a pioneering horror novelist who impacted and inspired numerous horror-centered artists, be they writers, filmmakers, musicians, or painters, despite his contentious nature. Lovecraft's stories are notoriously strange, and he was a master at capturing the terrible atmosphere that pervades his writings; an atmosphere that would draw you in so deep that you felt as if you were there yourself. His literary style is instantly recognizable, and although being repetitious at times, it remains one of the most unique and distinct in the history of horror literature.
The word "Lovecraftian horror" refers to a subgenre or style of horror fiction inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's stories. He is also regarded as the "Father" of the cosmic horror subgenre, which he frequently employs in his works. ‘The Dream Cycle’, which is about the mythical "Dreamlands," and the ‘Cthulhu Mythos’, which is about the vast mythology of giant creatures, are the two major cycles in which his horror novels are split. Both of these exhibit vibrant chaos that has terrified readers for over a century. We've decided to visit that chaos in today's video and give you a list of all the terrible Lovecraftian monsters that have appeared in his stories, as well as stories by other Lovecraftian authors.

I love how lovecraftian horror truly embodies the idea of humanities fear of the unknown, probably the greatest fear of all. It puts into perspective how creativity might be our own downfall through the creation of the we dont understand. And all of it was said by the mind of an insane, broken man who feared his own shadow. And just from what he wrote and how impactful its been, his fears might have been justified.

it sucks though because you can't do it in a movie they wanted to make a movie out of "at the mountains of madness" and the shoggoth was gonna literally be a guy dressed as a zombie instead of a mass of eyeballs and slime/bubbles/tentacles

Perhaps there was more to his shadow after all. Otherwise why would such a deeply enriched imaginative mind be afraid of it as if he sensed something in it , something timeless, formless and lifeless. Perhaps that thought first emanated when he was creating the most insane ideas out of his mind, and perhaps his mind was merely a conduit and the words were coming to him through whatever lied beyond his shadow.

Azathoth is misinterpreted a lot in general by those who haven't read Lovecraft's works and trust everything they read on wikis or Chaosium. Azathoth dwells in the "Ultimate Void of Chaos", a realm that is outside all dimensioned space and reality, even higher dimensional spaces we can't comprehend. In these "spiral black vortices" of Chaos reside the Ultimate Gods aka the Other Gods, which is what most people call "the Outer Gods" (a term never used by Lovecraft). The Other Gods as well as Azathoth are described only in vague terms, "blind, tenebrous, voiceless, mindless" and dance "slowly, awkwardly and absurdly" to the sound of a thin monotonous whine from blasphemous flutes and the pounding of vile hellish drums. Nyarlathotep is described as the "Soul and Messenger" of Infinities Other Gods, being a hatchetman of their insane will. Azathoth is described most often as the "Daemon Sultan" and also the "Nuclear Chaos" as well as the Blind Idiot God. Azathoth is described in the same manor as the Other Gods (blind, mindless etc) which shouldn't necessarily mean "low IQ or dumb" but more in the context of them being uncaring, acting seemingly insane and nonsensical and chaotic (they are the gods of the outer Chaos after all). Azathoth is mentioned to "gibber, blaspheme, bubble" in the centre of the ultimate blackness of Chaos, sprawled on a Black Throne surrounded by the flute and drum-playing Other Gods and their mindless dancers. He is also described as "Lord of All, Lord of All Things" and that he "rules all time and space". He also is said (in a poem) to mutter the contents of his dreams, which he can't understand (which I think is a poetic way of saying he is the generator and source of chaos) and that the flute-players, through "chance combining, give each frail cosmos its eternal law). To our perspective, nothing in this terrifying outer void of ultimate blackness and chaos make sense to us, and the Other Gods and Azathoth are too alien and insanely chaotic to interact properly with lower beings, so their "soul" and "messenger" is sent as avatars to the lower realities to fulfil their untranslatable will.

Greeks don't actually think Zeus is sitting up there in the clouds, just as a Lovecraft reader doesn't think we exist in an ancient formless alien's dream😂😂

Actually Cthulhu is seen in Lovecrafts stories. In Call of Cthulhu norwegian madlad Johansen drove a steamship through Cthulhu's head. Cthulhu got better though, apparently steamship piercing through noggin is not enough to kill Cthulhu.

It's been a while since I've read the novel, but IIRC the ship met a bit of resistance, before Cthulhu poofed as a cloud, said cloud rapidly reforming his shape behind the poor survivor. I think saying they "can have a physical form" isn't completely wrong... But it's not like having a concrete body will actually make him act as a biological being.

Hmmm, I recently got the Night Gallery collection and watched that installment. I never realized that the show used Lovecraft in more than one episode, the most memorable being their rendition of "Pickman's Model".

In Lovecraft universe, all is within the dreams of Azathoth. When he wakes up it's said that all of reality will vanish. This fact causes cults to diverge into two classes, those who seek to perform rituals that wake Azathoth up and those who perform rituals to keep him dreaming. There's a being that plays a whining fiddle near the sleeping god so atleast there's that😅 Same goes for Cthulhu but the consequences aren't as dire. Yes the world goes insane if he awakes but the universe as we know it wouldn't perish. As Azathoth is dreaming, he has no will or motive, he instructs no one. That's why he's the blind idiot god, so Nyarlathotep getting orders from him is quite impossible. If this phenomenon is in a story then I'm sure it was written not by Lovecraft and was probably by a contemporary after his death, as it wasn't corrected or challenged. Edit: Seems to be a popular hypothesis that Nyarlathotep is a shattered shard of Azathoth's own mind(a nod to Skog) and is one of the only Gods to not only notice mankind but also has the capacity to insert themselves into an individual's life to cause mental turmoil and chaos. So in the way that he is a sentient piece of Azathoth's mind and seems to have a motive, he's personified as their messenger but to say he gets direct messages or contact from Azathoth is absurd and that's the point I was driving at

I agree. Yet Nyarlathotep is the mind and the messenger of Azathoth and the Outer gods like Yog-Sothoth and Shub-Niggurath. Nyarlathotep therefore might be the split off mind of Azathoth that manifests inside his dream to guide the world to the sultans will. Even us humans can change and form our own dreams with our thoughts while we sleep. So why shouldn't a being as mighty as an outer god do sth different? Maybe Azathoth even needs to dream as it serves the purpose of some kind of meditation, maybe he feeds off our despair and chaos. We might be a dream of him or we might just exist in his dream which is a mirror to the real world. Maybe the demons with the flutes and drums just keep him asleep and "imprison him". Yet that idea is strange as he is the "demon sultan" and therefore their leader. Or as mentioned before the dreaming is a meditation to let him and his breed burst out of their chains and into our world - all through Nyarlathoteps contacts with our society. Through rituals and cults. Who knows.

@@joshwright4799 One punch man doesn't seem to be able to shape shift, change avatars, access other dimensions, or cause insanity so I'd say the latter would win. Probably rendering one punch man mindless or opening a dimension and leaving him in there but one on one, I'd say one punch man would annihilate Nyarlathotep's current avatar(if in solid form) but I doubt that'd be the end of the fight

I can totally see the influence of Yog-sothoth in Hermaeus Mora from The Elder scrolls series. Also Yig's influence in Eiglay, the god-devouring serpent in Elden Ring, which is basically just influenced by Quetzalcoatl.

Don't forget the Void in Warcraft lore Even literally sending minions into Reality to corrupt planets, distinctly based on lovecraftian horrors, called Old Gods. Four of those landed on the planet Azeroth (maybe coincidentally named, I don't remember), and these four were known as C'thun, Yogg-saron, N'zoth and Y'shaarj. Tentacles and eyes and all.

The old ones defeated the shoggoth uprising in mountains of madness. The story refers to weapons used against the shoggoths and the statues showed the victorious old ones. There was a surviving shoggoth at the entrance the the old ones underground city

Yes, but the shoggoths eventually overpowered and destroyed the Great Old Ones, annihilating them utterly and conquering the vast subterranean city they built on the shores of that Stygian lake under Antarctica. At least, that was the conclusion I arrived at from reading Lovecraft's description of those final few Old Ones' tragic homecoming to a city that was to them 50 million years dead.

Actually the realization at the end of mountains of madness was that the shoggoths rose up once again and we're victorious. Hence the lowest levels of the city are covered in the shoggoths inferior sculpture hieroglyph

@@jiffyjeff612 well you could be right but the old ones went deep underground where they could be sure of warmth. They abandoned the surface and a shoggoth took over but the old ones were still ok just deep underground. The shoggoth was just one that was left behind. I dont think its guarding the entrance to the old ones undercity because of what it did to the area so it was not under the control of the old ones but theres no reason to think there was another successful shoggoth uprising.

The creepiest thing about Rhan Tegoth isn’t that bug-body, it’s those thousands of slimy little tentacles that run the length of it’s underbelly. They pierce whatever prey is captured (or offered) and suck out all the juices, leaving an almost unrecognizable pile of shredded meat… pretty gruesome.

I have been searching haplessly for a concordance or some other document that lists all the creatures of the Cthulhu Mythos that names which stories they appeared in, who the author was, what the creature did, and their genealogy, allies, enemies, and what other creatures are part of its ecosystem. Thank you for the great piece of work. I now need to get out my notebook and begin taking notes.

I think Lovecraft found people's impulse to read every t followed by an h as "th" as in this to be amusing, because he named his fictional university Miskatonic University, a phonetic spelling of the word "cthonic" or of the earth, earth gods, particularly underground/underworld gods, are called cthonic gods. And yet people still read his gods as "ka-thoo-loo" and "nee-arlath-otep". Cthulhu, like Miskatonic, is also named for cthonic gods, so it's "Cuh-too-loo". I think we all learned about Ancient Egypt in school, so the suffix -hotep is likely to be at least vaguely familiar, and that's what Lovecraft used. Though I think there's still debate on how to pronounce the first half, nee-arlat-hotep or nai-ar-lat-hotep, but given it's Egyptian based, I think the former is more likely. Nee-arlat-hotep. No th sound. I'm about 70,000 words into a novel about an extremist Christian cult that go undercover into a Satanic Church because the leader thinks they were chosen to raise the Antichrist and they steal a book to do one of the rituals thinking they're doing it but it turns out the satanic cult is actually a cult who worships Lovecraftian gods. So the cult do the ritual and it ends up summoning enough power for Nyarlathotep to unleash hell on earth, and he opens a portal that he throws the cult leader through, and he ends up in space and sees Azathoth wake up just before he dies. It's fun to write. I was thinking of including that happens next but if I could manage to publish it somehow, and get any readers, picking up a second book right where that leaves off would be cool.

Usually by 3 minutes into one of your videos, I have to make the decision as to whether I can listen to it without screaming at my computer or not. You people really like to take fictional words seriously. Yeah, in the universe they're unthinkable and unnameable, in our world, no. Otherwise Lovecraft wouldn't have been able to write anything, being unable to think or name these ideas. In Lovecraft's work, the characters have a very different understanding of the universe, literally because Lovecraft says so, and because of their understanding they're driven mad when met by the creatures he wrote into it, who can only do so *because he said so*

It occurs to me that Yog-Sothoth may be very tentacly indeed: A 'series of spheres' are exactly what a mere human would observe were a tentacled creature existing in four or more dimensions to intersect our universe. This would also fit the description of being omniscient (for such a creature would be able to easily observe any event in the three-space universe) and yet still being trapped outside of the universe.

I can name a few for you……Lovecraft Country on HBOMax….the Dunwich Horror which stared Dean Stockwell, all though, it’s not very true to the story, outside of the names used…two games that I recognized (and own): The Call of Cthulhu and the Sinking City. Another game, though a bit older, is The call of Cthulhu: Dark corners of the earth….it is based on the story, The shadow over Innsmouth…it was available on the Xbox and PC…hope that helps you a bit

The movie Color put of Space with Nicholas Cage is based on a H.P. Lovecraft story of the same name. It's a pretty decent adaptation to the "creature" of phenomenon. But otherwise all the characters are added in.

Warning, many of the arkham files games use monsters from more than just lovecraft. For example, the king in yellow material is from a book that came out 20 years before lovecraft became published. Many other monsters are from arkham press stories that were released after lovecraft died.

So is everything from Terreria to Stranger Things, from Conan to Cabin in the Woods. It's so embedded in our culture that you can see it everywhere, even the flood in Halo seem to be inspired by it. D&D was pretty much half Tolkien high-fantasy and half Lovecraftian horror, and that stuff was integral to a huge number of people that would go on to carry the torch.

Question; How would someone pull of a lovecraftian action horror comic series. Like Larry Correia's Monster Hunter International? Maybe like the fantasy tropes where less people worship the Old Ones and maybe they aren't as powerful, they'll still drive people insane and are still a threat. But they don't have the power they once did.

August Derlith wrote some stories that could be a basis for this such as his spin where Hastor is using his children to attempt the murder of Cthulhu. The Tidus Crow Series is like this too, where it's about a kindof Indiana Jones Character that hunts down these creatures or finds cursed artifacts.

Check out Robert E Howard's stories. Part of the original Lovecraft Circle, also arguably invented Sword and Sorcery. His Solomon Kane stories are action-horror stories with elements of Cosmic Horror involving a witch hunter in the modern day, and some of his Mythos stories have elements of this (though even a dead old one's psychic remnants can be dangerous). In some of the original publications of his more thoroughly Sword and Sorcery stories some Lovecraftian entities supposedly got name dropped (I've only read reprints).

@@zionleach3001 I meant the original short stories (honestly more anything other than Conan, since of the Howard stories I've read Conan has the fewest Lovecraft elements). They'd at least give an idea how to do the action horror elements and create the balance. The Solomon Kane movie has 0 to do with the stories from what I remember of both (been like a decade since I watched/read either).

The universe was left open on purpose so stories could be approved and the lore could be expanded. Its all additions to fill in blanks that were left and add on. It’s as canon as it can be with that context.

Indeed. It really ruins the mystique and cosmic fear when you start talking about eldritch god babies. The whole point of cosmic horror (for me atleast) is that these "things" are unimaginable, so foreign, and so non human that men can't even look at them without going crazy. They are chaos that humans cant fathom. Then when you start talking about these beings having "children" and knowingly doing things, you have kinda ruined the whole point. It removes the whole root of the unkown fear that really makes these stories.

I think cosmic horror doesnt work as well in movies, because in a book if it describes something as a mass of writhing limbs, your mind fills that in. But in the movies, it is there seen. It's not as bad with normal monsters like fish people though

@@francescoaccomando7781 that movie was terrible and the concept quickly fizzled into nothing. There is literally absolutely zero stakes for everything after the river scene That's....half the movie. You spend the second half of the movie completely secure in the knowledge that no one could possibly be hurt Bird box is an embarassingly poor example of cosmic horror in film

@@tikkidaddy In Robert Bloch's follow-up story "The Shadow FromThe Steeple", the mysterious and fanatical Dr. Dexter, who threw the stone pillar and the box with the Shining Trapezohedron into "the deepest channel of the Narragansett", was revealed in the ending to be an avatar of Nyarlathotep, but no such connection was made to the Haunter. What source gave you that information, if I may ask?

@@GRAYR189 Dr. Dexter tossing the Trapizohedron into the depths of the bay would of course provide huge advantage since the Haunter was stated as being banished by light of sufficient brightness, right..?? Nyarlethotep appears in a plethora of avarars, and was capable of transferring his consciousness thru the stone..."win win" as they say...I am by no means an expert on HPL , just an old metalhead who started reading years ago because of...Metallica. Their former bassist Cliff Burton was a huge HPL fan and a number of their songs were written along this line including the instrumental "The call of Kthulhu", of which the version performed in concert with the SFSA, Michael Kamen conducting is my favorite. I once owned a large Burmese Python and would play the song when I fed her. She was near 18 ft. long and weighed 175 pounds. 😁Youre most welcome and I hope my reply was helpful, it was not meant to be sarcastic.

Instead of saying "dimension," you should use "universe" or "plane of existence." (The latter is also problematical when taken literally, but it's a bit closer to reality than "dimension."

You forgot to mention that Shub-Niggurath is 1 of the few Great Old Ones who sided with humanity & helps them defeat "rogue gods", making her some sort of vigilante queen. Forget what you saw in "South Park" or that "Overlord" anime.

Is that ever stated in Lovecraft's works? I thought the general stance of the Outer Gods is that they don't care too much about us unless called.

@@dmin5782 Either you didn't read my comment properly or you can't tell the difference between a Great Old One & an Outer God. & yes it was explained in the books.

@@Kankan_Mahadi After some research, Shub-Niggurath was only ever mentioned by name in Lovecraft's story. It was never stated if she's an Outer God or a Great Old One. Maybe you got that from some post-Lovecraft works.

@@dmin5782 Poor researching skills. Lovecraft explicitly defined Shub-Niggurath as a mother goddess in The Mound, where he calls her "Shub-Niggurath, the All-Mother". He describes her as a kind of Astarte in the same story. In Out of the Aeons, she is one of the deities siding with humanity against "hostile gods". All that implies that she's a Great Old One because she still physically exists in our world. The Outer Gods came from another existence & reality, traversing space & time.
