I have had my 444 scout for about 4 years, and I love it. Mine has a Leupold Freedom 3x9x40 scope on it. I have used mine for hog and deer with great results. Since most 44 bullets are made for 44 mag handgun velocities, I have found they often over expand or break apart in game when used in the 444. I now make my own core bonded bullets on a Corbin bullet swage press. I use a harder lead and a thicker jacket than most factory bullets. Mine expand, but so far, they have not broken apart. Enjoy your scout!.

I remember the pistol bullets loaded in the 444 was one of the reasons it fell out of favor for quite a while. Don't know if that has been remedied.

I have two .444’s. A Marlin 444-P and a Handi Rifle. For all practical purposes, the .444 is too much gun for white tail. However, due to the straight wall cartridge regulations that we have here in Ohio, the .444 has become one of favorite calibers. My preferred cartridge is the Hornady 265 gr. flat point. Unfortunately, the flat point is getting phased out in favor of the FTX. If you ever find the flat point ammunition on your dealer’s shelf, stock up. You will not regret it. The Hornady 265 gr flat point features a thicker copper jacket in comparison to typical .429 caliber bullets specifically designed to handle the additional velocity featured by the .444. Comparing the .444 to the .45-70, the .444 traditionally features a lighter bullet traveling at a higher velocity. Meanwhile, the .45-70 offers heavier bullets and a larger caliber at the expense of a little velocity. There is not much real world difference inside 150 yards. Enjoy your .444 and best of luck to all this hunting season.

For a very short time in the early 90's I had a Marlin 1895 in 444 Marlin. Sold it to get a pair of Sig P220's. I think that round could stop a train. Never had a problem with brush and tree limbs when hunting in central Alabama. If I didn't already have a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington, I might consider buying another one. Thanks, as always WTW, the video was great.

Color me old and odd. Probably about the age of 12 or 13 (1972 - 1973) I caught the interest of firearms and hunting. I landed on the Marlin Model 444 and thought that was the game getter for me. Fast forward to ???? and at a SHOT Show Winchester offered a 94 chambered in .444 Marlin. End of year company bonus afforded me the wherewithal to purchase a Winchester Black Shadow Big Bore AE chambered in .444 Marlin. Only wish Marlin (yes, owned by Ruger) would reintroduce the Marlin 444. In a heartbeat.

I owned a Marlin lever-action .444 Marlin in the '70s and '80s. Loved the beast. Sadly, it was stolen by the mover driver when I moved across country (long story, I had to move in a hurry for my job and my wife was snookered by the driver who told her that all firearms had to travel in the cab.) FBI, ATF, and law enforcement at both ends were totally unconcerned.

Make sure your scope is rated for high recoil! I have the same gun, it ate the reticles out of 2 scopes before I shelled out the dough for a good scope! Also, the 444 Marlin has much better ballistics than 45-70 if you look at 200-300 yards!

The 444 Marlin had a lot to do with me getting into reloading when I was 15 in the mid '80's. Dad bought me a Marlin lever action 444 for Christmas that year and laughed at me the first time I shot it 'cause it nearly jumped outa my hands! The Remington 240 factory load did not do the best in that gun. It wasn't very accurate and it would jam when feeding because of the bullet nose being so wide. I handloaded the Hornady 265 gr and it shot much better and fed flawlessly and really pole axed the deer - it was like a piano fell on them. I also loaded the Hornady XTP 300 gr hollow point and it shot and functioned very well despite the slow rifling twist but I never ended up hunting with it - I think it would have been awesome.

I bought a lever gun from Marlin .444 Marlon. I was 20. Shot a dear. It jumped up 3 feet's...lol went 2 steps life was over for that baby. I also took it on a bear hunt. Black bear about 350 lbs one shot. It went out with me one more time, my friend was going to kill a Grizzly with a knife. (Ik stupid but I wouldn't) I was back up in case he got in trouble and he immediately got in trouble and fell on the ground and I had to take a shot add him the bear that is i hit the bear bad spot we tracked the Grizzly for hours. It bleed out. But he claimed he killed it by knife and all our friends were impressed. Me I stayed silent because he paid for my complete trip, all expenses. Then later on that year he took me to south Texas for a Russian red boar hunt. All paid for by him. Nice to have dumb friends. But you will love that gun. Idk if they make a lever gun any more. I paid $225 for that gun. Still have it today. Beautiful gun.

When I bought my Marlin .444, I could have chosen the 45-70 as well. In TODAY's crazy world, I can't find .444 Marlin ammo locally but can buy 45-70 ammo and at cheaper prices than the .444 Marlin costs (IF I could find some). I still remember the Remington catalog presentation when they rolled out their .444 Marlin rifle and fell in love with it. Again, in today's crazy world of sky high gun costs and low availability of even sky high ammo costs I will keep my .444 Marlin but if money were no object, I would buy a 45-70 just so I could have something in this range to shoot on a regular basis.

Factory 444 if memory serves me is more ft lbs than factory 45-70 because of chamber pressure limits for rifles made to the 70 grains of black powder the cartridge is named for. The 45-70 can be loaded up more for modern firearms but God help the guy who picks any of that ammo up somehow depending on what it’s being fed through. There’s a lot of powder in a 444 so you’re going to want a sufficient volume of silencer for it. Used to get some 444 Remington 265 gr core lock ammo for a single shot pistol and the dusk time fireball was about 10” diameter and several feet long out of a 14” barrel. Old Remington ammo was known for slow burning powder back when at least it seemed there was always unburnt stuff on the firearm and drifting into your eye from the 12 gauge on a quick second shot. I used to reload those with Hornady XTP 240 gr hp and IMR 4198 powder. Way less fireball and devastating milk jug full of water performance. Never one to press into hot loading it either it ws according to the Hornady book and under the max recommendation. Up close that thing is going to bring the boogie. A 240 grain total metal jacket and the 4198 load will punch through the cutting part of a disc blade even when it is laying back at an angle, or potentially make a 1 1/2” tear in the hub of it, that’s like 3/16” or a little better tempered steel and a 14” barrel. Please get some 240 gr hollow points for the clay block test!

My understanding is that the 45-70 was all but dead in the early 60s so Marlin developed the 444 as a replacement. They basically stretched the 44magnum case by 1 inch to get the 444. If this is incorrect, please correct me.

Good old 444 Marlin four sure . Nice big bore pill. I've been looking for a lever gun in 444 Marlin for many years at the right price used. Most sellers want $2,000- 2,800 in Canadian fund$ , just can't see me paying the price. Might get me a CVA in 444 Marlin at the right price.

Good luck with the search. Levers are priced way too stupid IMO. Hopefully the fad will go away and no movie or television hero will use a lever rifle in any new shows, and the people that want a lever rifle to use and hunt with will again be able to afford one

Silencerco or gunbroker should have the adapter you need, ran into similar issues with a Chiappa 44mag lever action a couple years ago.

Hey, buddy... It's been a minute, sorry 'bout that, too many fires to put out in the badger den. 😊 I discovered the Marlin .444 lever when inwas living in the Rockies, years ago. Its definitely a shoulder cannon and for mountainous terrain, going after large deer, elk and moose (and anything else in your way) it's absolutely a beast. *The* beast... You have to put your thumb up to see the bullet move through the air but, when it hits... Lights out, it hits like a 12lb sledge being swung by the hulk. Are there "bigger better badder bullets??" Sure but they're often a whole different, often complicated/unique/obscure/expensive deal. Whereas the .444 Marlin is as simple, old school and just plain effective as it gets. There are lots ive known to be detractors and yet, not a single one of them has offered to stand in for the target in order to prove their point. 😊 😉 And a 3x9 is plenty of scope for the terrain and targets you'll be facing and can offer a quicker sighting option. I have a 3x9 Weaver (almost instant sight picture and very stable, a great look-see) on my old, mint condition, '72 B.A.R. in .30-06 we've talked about in the past. 😊 (And you need some lead on that "Lead sled"). 😊

I just bought a cva scout 444. Hope it shoots as good as your's! The 444, 265gr should out perform 325gr 45-70 standard loads. 45-70 +p loads run about 300fps faster than standard loads, so they are a step up. Either should put a stomping on a Whitetail buck. Keep up the good work on your videos.

Nice rifle and accurate too. The 444 really needs a good 300 grain bullet but the twist rate on most rifles can't stabilize it so accuracy suffers. Maybe the Scout is different because it is so accurate with the ammo you used. Reloading with a 300 grain bullet might be worth a try. Thanks for another excellent video.
