Many years ago I went on a quest to have rifles and handguns in the same caliber. For some calibers I had to turn to Thompson Center but I was pleasantly surprised to find quite a few in a standard revolver. The 45-70 does pack a punch in a revolver. The 458 Winchester is my latest, kinda gave up on the Lott after shooting a lighter weight rifle, that is a serious round. Although it can be loaded with less powder the Winchester to me is a better all around cartridge.

Their actually not that bad to shoot, I'd you have experience with big bore handguns. Shot mine plenty of times since I got it in 2006. Now, would I run seriously hot loads in it, or sit down and run a full box through it? No, because that does put a serious strain on your wrist, and you're gonna be sore for a couple days, afterward. But the shape of the grip allows it to ride up, like a single action revolver does, which lessens felt recoil, so it's not as bad as some would think. However, there are limits to what someone can endure, pain wise, and beyond 3 to 5 rounds, us where I set my own max. About what Scott fired from his, on the top barrel. It's also something that I wouldn't hand off to a brand new shooter, for a lot of reasons, developing a flinch, being the least of them. Safety being the main one. Same with most handguns bigger than .357 Magnum, as we've all seen the videos where a nice ends up slapping out a second shot, from muzzle flip and torque. But I wouldn't think twice about it, with someone used to a .44 Magnum or a .454 Casull.

Barrel length doesn't have much to do with accuracy. As long as it's long enough to get the bullet properly engaged with the rifling and stabilised in flight, then a longer barrel won't make it more accurate. Long barrels can, however, increase your sight radius, and change the functional accuracy of a firearm, but not the mechanical accuracy.

The fact the 45-70 went all the way through the ballistic jell, indicates the cartridge is way overpowered for the platform, unless you’re planning on going up against Kodak bear. 45 Colt would be enough power for a self defense cartridge.

The 000 buck was actually flattened by being fired, not the impact with the gel. It's a known issue with .410 buckshot loads. Because the shot is stacked in a single column, the rear balls are sandwiched between the explosion and the inertia of the balls in front and get squished. The farther back, the more they get squished. This doesn't happen as much with other gauges because the shot is not in a single column so the force is distributed to at least two other balls, at an angle to the direction thrust. Even so, with unplated lead shot, there's usually noticeable deformation.

This man has zero hesitation when it comes to recoil. All of us pew pew fans act like tough guys but when a round doesn’t go off you see a lot of flinching regardless. Scott has none of that. I’d love to meet him. As a son of a career sniper and 40 year master firearms instructor I grew up on the range watching Dad compete, also in World Swat competitions. Even he can be recoil aware on some large caliber wrist breakers and he has had to have a shoulder replacement due to decades of shooting. Mad respect Scott. Off hand, one hand, double fisted…… nothing bothers you. Not even a .50 blowing up in your face. God Bless.

The gel test answers alot of questions. Like how it's possible to hold that nub while releasing a 45-70. The unburned powder effectively nerfs the round to a level thst the gun is usable. Sure it's a waste, but it does sound impressively rediculous.
