DIY effective air assist upgrade for the xTool D1 laser cutter/engraver for less than 45$. It requires zero modifications to the lasercutter and is surprisingly quiet. The nozzles aims a jet of air exactly at the point being cut by the laser, so you don't need a huge air compressor to get clean cuts. It's just a 30L/min pump I bought on AliExpress (non-affiliate link below). Everything you need to make your own + extra explanations can be found in my instructable (free & no login required):
www.instructables.com/DIY-Che...
If you need someone to print the nozzle for you, you can either download the STL's from my instructable (link above) or look for someone to print for you. Be sure top print the nozzle printed using a resin printer! It's best to print the tube holder with a FDM printer (or cut something similar with your laser).

People were pretty offended by my video claiming I stole GeeksAtLarge's idea. Before designing my air assist I looked at the work of many other creators for inspiration, and since nothing fit what I wanted perfectly, I made my own version. There are fundamental differences (and similarities) between my work and others'. I also gave credits on my instructable article (link below) before posting this video.
I appreciate GeeksAtLarge's air assist design, as well as others here on KZfaq and Thingiverse. Thanks to all of you who have been sharing your designs online. I don't claim to work in the vacuum of space - I took inspiration from many projects before making my own, and I appreciate them. If you look around you'll see that GeeksAtLarge is not that different from many older versions either. I'm not saying he stole his design, but he found inspiration in other people's work, just like I did.
As I saw it when posting the video, I thought the existing models can be improved, at least for my needs, and so I made my take on the existing air assist projects by modifying them. I also tried to show how I design my projects since I thought it might be interesting to some people. Finally, my video is about the air assist design but also my choices for the pump, how I assembled everything, and how it all performs.
One more Important note - I'm not making any money out of this project, as some people claimed. **

Some pretty harsh comments here. A lot of people have similar/identical designs. There is only so much variation you can make for something like this, so I think it's very possible that this is his own design. Thank you for sharing this!

Nix, Your work is amazing. It is unfortunate to see the comments. No creative work Is done in a vacuum. The only one who is known for creating out of thin air is God, and even that is debated. Inspiration is the base of creation. Everybody should be satisfied to see your and others' creations. Keep on Creating and Sharing 👌

Hello friend, first of all, thank you very much for the video and the Instructables. However, I have a question. In your project, you made your own Air Nozzle on a 3D printer, but if I'm not mistaken, the xTOOL D1 Pro already comes with a Metal Air Nozzle (I bought my laser but it hasn't arrived yet), so this Air Pump that you show in your video, does it fit the Metal Nozzle that comes with the xTOOL, without having to do your whole project? I am asking you, because this Air Pump you show is cheaper than the original Air Pump from xTOOL. Thanks
@nixmakes
@nixmakes Жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, thanks for the question. I have the xTool D1, but not the pro version. I tried to see what's included in the box, to answer your question, but I couldn't find it, so here my answer: An air assist set is made of 3 parts, the air pump, a nozzle, and a tube connecting them. The air pump xTool is selling is nothing special, it's a 30L/min pump and the link I provided is basically for the same kind of pump. I've been using it for a few months and it's been doing it's job well. Now, if the new D1 (pro) comes with a nozzle made for an air assist, you'll have to see how a tube can be connected to it. It may come with an adapter designed to fit an air tube, and then all you need is to get whatever pump you like, and find a tube to connect it to their nozzle. If it doesn't come with a nozzle, you can measure the laser lens' diameter and use one of the files I provided in the instructables article. My suggestion is to wait for the laser to arrive. An air assist is a really nice addition, it gets rid of the charring problem, but it's really more about aesthetics - it's not a must-have from day one. It's going to take you some time to get used to the laser cutter in any case, so I'd wait and see what comes with the laser, and only then order and assemble whatever air assist set you may like. Worst case - you don't have the air assist for a couple of weeks because you ordered the one from xTool a bit late, best case - you make your own and save around 100$. Hope this was helpful! :)

Hi Nix, thank you very much for your tips, it was very helpful, yes! I had bought the Sculpfun S6 Pro and sold it to buy the xTOOL, so now it will be a new challenge because the laser is much more powerful. Do you have any cutting and/or engraving charts you could share with me? Thanks again

this style design and the one from geeks at large actually do a better job vs the xtool d1 pro air assist nozzle. it aims and focuses the air in a more accurate way. just because the xtool comes with the nozzle, doesn't mean you have to use it. it is removable and you put this nozzle type in it's place. as long as it fits over your lens cover(make sure to measure).

People should probably check out thingiverse. There are lots of air assist designs out there and some were made before geeksatlarge. Nothing special. I have two I designed in cad myself. If the guy designed it in cad he put the work in to make the file and replicate the file as he pleases. Pretty limited in where you can run the air assist.

I'll remove the links now, thanks for letting me know. Instead, you can find someone on facebook or someone you know with a resin printer to print the STL files for you. So I finally go the air assist from China. They sent 220 volt. The language barrier is the problem with dealing with China. 220 is not standard in USA except for large appliances. Like the stove in my kitchen . Great looking piece of equip. Sad I would have to unplug my kitchen stove to use it!!

Ouch!! Sorry that happened! They sometimes have a forgiving return policy which is worth it if the shipping costs are not too high. Or maybe you could find a transformer for it (you might have to make sure it's fit for 60Hz because, if I'm not mistaken, US standard is 60Hz while lots of other parts are 50Hz).

Hi, thanks for taking the time to comment :) I didn't mean to offend anyone, and I'm sorry if I did. In fact, this video is meant to go along with my instructable, where I definitely gave GeeksAtLarge the credit they deserve. Honestly, I saw many designs before making mine, their design wasn't special, it was similar to others made for different laser cutters. Moreover, their design uses a 3D printer nozzle which I thought was an unnecessary complication (I thought it would make more noise and lower the efficiency of the air assist, and I wanted to use a small air pump). Again, sorry if I offended you, I didn't claim not to see other people's designs, and I made changes to the existing ones along with giving them credit on my main article (see instructable in the description). Sharing my projects is not my profession, and it will never be. I do this because I like sharing and I think sometimes people can learn from my work or make use of it. 😂 The mean comments are pretty old, but still, I was shocked at first too. Some guy is selling a product similar to the one I shared (for a lot of money), and I guess they got mad I was sharing my design for free (they're like a gang from a Facebook group or something). I saw many designs before making this one (his too, which is nearly identical to other ones designed for different lasers). I couldn't find anything perfect for me, so I made my version. I don't claim to work in vacuum, that'd be insane - why not see what's out there? If I saw something that I really liked, I'd just use it. I wouldn't bother making a video about it either (and waste anyone's time). I make $0 for posting my projects online, yet for some reason some people still think I owe them something? Anyways, thanks for stopping by :)

@nixmakes Жыл бұрын
@@joshcolvey8585 I'm not selling it, if you bothered watching the video or reading my instructable you would know. I added links to a website that helps you find someone to print the parts for you. I make no profit out of that (although it would be fair and square if I did). I saw GeekAtLarge's design as well as many other models before making mine, I don't claim to be working in the vacuum of space. But I didn't steal anyone's work. I didn't like GeekAtLarge's use of a 3D printer nozzle, so I removed it (using the nozzle is not his idea by the way. This air assist design used it and was posted a few days before GeeksAtLarge's www.thingiverse.com/thing:4704160 coincidence? no. Stealing? Also no. Other ideas he used were online before he used them too, just search thingieverse if you like). I didn't make any comparisons between my design and GeeksAtLarge's nor anyone else's designs, I'm sure there are other differences, but the nozzle was the reason I didn't just use his design and move on to the next thing. I searched online and couldn't find anything that was perfect for what I wanted, so I made my take. I'm not making profit off of this, I have a different profession, you're welcome to visit my website and read all about me if you like (nirlivne.com). Many people were very upset about my project - I guess I touched an open wound or something. But like I said, I'm not making any profit off of this and all I tried to do is share my project so that other people can make use of it - how I design (how I do research and 3D model), what stuff I used to make this, and how to assemble the project. I don't see how this can be harmful to anyone, and I plan on keeping my project online here and on instructables for people to use. I didn't do anything wrong here, and I hope my answer is satisfactory to you and others.
