Most respect to you. I moved to UT 2 yrs ago and stated pack packing soon after. I'm 57 and feel i am in the best shape of my life, and after 2 knee surgeries i am blessed to even be able to hike. I used to be a runner and so I really have to pace myself while on trail. The first time I went to Zion I did 27 miles in one day and can tell you the next day was a off day, so i can kinda see what you went through.

Thanks for sharing Taysom. I did one of the Cirque Series mountain runs this summer in Alaska. I’m with you on the steep descents. Painful on the knees and hate the loss of control running down with abandon. But it is great to test and push yourself. Merry Christmas!

Tayson, first off, fantastic job. I have ran ultras before and sooooo relate to what you went through. Might I suggest you rethink your hydration plan. This is why I don't use bladders. You never know how much you have left in them so you can never know if you're getting enough so you always tend to try and reserve, because you don't know. Plus chances are you've got too much in them anyway and you carry around all of the extra weight. I have a hip belt bottle holder that the bottle slides into a holster. And I usually do a hand carry bottle as well after my first aid station. One bottle for water only. The second for nutrition like Hammer perpetuem plus snacks. And this way I can monitor how much I drink and not carry too much. Tayson, you're a class act. Keep up the good work. ( and I love the pillow you sent me)

Yes for sure I've been rethinking my hydration plan! I don't backpack with bladders anymore and I may have to stop running with them as well. Originally I just felt like I missed my marks, but yoru right, when you can visually see the levels of everything you are so much more aware! I may have been able to catch it earlier on and adjust better...Either way I learned a ton and will be heading back this summer to apply what I learned and train even more specifically for an event like this! Thanks!

@OutdoorVitals Hi hope you're feeling well! Your symptoms of facial twitching, slurred speech, cramps, nausea, may have been medical emergencies. Electrolyte imbalances can quickly decompensate into serious issues. (You might want to educate your audience that these need medical attention 😊). Love, an ER resident
@thetaysonwhittaker
@thetaysonwhittaker Жыл бұрын
Yes, it was definitely a close balance of emergency and manageable. I would never recommend anyone keeps going in these scenarios. I chose that personally, but I'd never coach someone else to do the same. We'll have to see if we can work that into future content.

Order of every ultra is....1. Find an Ultra 2. Signup 3. train 4. Wonder why you signed up 5. Start the race 6. Feel horrible and wonder why on Earth you ever chose to do this race 7. Say you'll never do a race again 8. 48 hours later, find your next race. Nice work out there troubleshooting and getting that finish.

I am a Maltese outdoor youtuber from Malta and have a question for you, why Outdoor Vitals and most of US brands and shops do not ship to Europe, more specifically Malta Europe ? We did a video about it a while back, but main takeaways are stay hydrated and the more stress in the body the higher the likelihood of getting... Stress can be physical exercise or lack of sleep!

any advice for people to START running for those of us who dont currently run?
@TaysonWhittaker
@TaysonWhittaker Жыл бұрын
Just start small & keep it consistent! You don't want to have any long breaks between your runs in order to make progress. Everyone's starting point is different.
@thetaysonwhittaker
@thetaysonwhittaker Жыл бұрын
My advice would be jump into our Member 100 Challenge that should start taking sign ups in January! The framework we build and physically send to you in there is our best guidance. Other than that, I'd second the other comment here. Start small and don't compare yourself. Don't exceed increasing over 10% in weekly milage. So if you run 5 miles in all of week one, week two only do 5.5ish miles. This becomes more of a rule to not deviate from once you get up to 10+ miles a week!

I respect the effort. However, I’m afraid a lot of these people are turning this into more of a sport than a way to relax and enjoy nature. Which is the reason that I go hiking backpack. I have really no concern about how many miles I walk.
