More intense cardio burns a higher percentage of glucose (depleting your glycogen stores); this would be the case with a steep fast climb, and in this case, you would need more carbohydrates. Slower steady hikes burn a higher percentage of fats, but your digestive system can only digest fats so fast, so don't eat too much at once. Tailor your diet to your hike and also your own body and your own preferences. I have found that listening to my body, and knowing how to anticipate what I need, makes a huge difference for the success and enjoyment of any hike. If you hike slow for a long time, you can actually utilize more fats so taking the higher calorie per ounce can work. I like having a mix of snacks for exactly the reason Tayson Whittaker says.

This is not correct - it’s the top of pelvis not hip bone. Hip bone is way down below your waistband.

If you have good information, don't drown it out or distract from it with music. If you don't have good information, go right ahead. We were in southern Utah and northern Arizona a couple of weeks ago. Beautiful, albeit a tad (110 F) warm.

I've always been a pants guy. But I did a 100 mile hike and brought shorts as a backup/change. When I actually used them they were great and I think its going to be shorts going forward.

When I was young I could just hike for hours. Now that I'm in my later 50's, taking more frequent breaks as suggested by Tayson helps a lot. Also, I often hear people say that when you hike big miles, your not "smelling the roses". I disagree with this statement. Not only are you seeing, hearing, smelling your surroundings as you are hiking, you are also stopping in 6 different locations for breaks and to camp where you get to just lay around enjoying where you are at.

Surface wetting does not mean it's not waterproof. Goretex is still waterproof without the DWR.

I use both, my issue has been using using bottles and having easy access, and which case like most things, if I can’t get to it, I am not going to use it. But like most people have said here only clean water goes in that bladder. I do bring a bottle for drink mixes and I use an ultralight Nalgene wide mouth for this, I hate filtering water and trying to get it into the small bottle holes and if that means I spill some on myself while hiking then so be it. Just like the versatility of a Nalgene for other uses as well.

This isn't even true (at least it is misleading). If DWR _only_ failed because of wearing off, then that would be acceptable to most people. However, DWR will fail THE FIRST TIME YOU WEAR IT IN HEAVY RAIN for half an hour or more (plus or minus a little depending on the jacket). That is a much greater problem than wearing out.

Thanks! Pack base weight was around 10-12 lbs plus food and and water. So day 1 most of us were about 18-20 lbs and the last day closer to 10-12. The shirts/ hoodies are the OV altitude sun shirts!
