I drooled over a Springfield Armory V16 Longlide about twenty years ago. I went home and researched the 45Super and decided I had to have it. I went back to buy it and it was gone. If you see something unusual that you like, at a good price, don't hemhaw around.

Because the .451” JHP bullets are designed to expand at standard .45 auto velocities, they over-expand and come apart at super velocities. The 135 grain solid copper FTM from Underwood would be my first choice for a factory self defense round. I recently converted my Glock 30 to .45 super, and I handload the 120 grain FTM Lehigh bullets to 1700 fps for 770 fpe. Recoil is about like a full power 10mm. I installed a KKM 4.7” barrel with a Wolff steel guide rod with 23 pound recoil spring.

+1 for the heavy hardcast 45 SUPER! Lots of guys have a 45 that can be a woods gun with a little help. I keep a couple of Glock conversions in 45 SUPER and the hard cast penetration is scary AND deep! Just the ticket for when you are not at the apex of the food chain out there

I’m most interested in 45 super as a hunting/woods carry option. I’m so impressed with the 230gr Punch out of my Colt Defender I have to force myself to carry my Commanders. My HK45 will take 45 Super at least in moderate use, but with the primer shortage I’ve yet to test the polygonal rifled bore with hard cast. I’d prefer a 1911 for a woods gun anyway (I seem to prefer a 1911 for everyday carry) so I’m looking forward to tests of 230-250 gr bullets. Keep up the good work 👍

I use the 45 Super in my Marlin Camp 45 carbine for hog and deer hunting inside 75 yards. Quite successful at that. My biggest hog weighed 300 lbs. The shot was broadside at 30 yards, squarely through two ribs. I recovered the textbook mushroom bullet inside the opposite hide. The hog trotted ten yards and dropped. On deer, the bullet went through, but they dropped inside ten yards as well. Getting more of this ammo, and 185 gr plus p for my Springfield 1911 Range officer.

Use a flat based firing pin stop plate to hold the gun together slightly longer. Magnify the effect by increasing mainspring pressure, a combination barrel bushing/compensator will increase your shooting pleasure , and finally. ....... my country boy gunsmithing approach to solving the bullet performance works great ! Put a drop of candle wax into the hollowpoint , after it cools spin a flat bladed screwdriver into the wax to remove about half of the wax from the cavity. Pre-clogging that hollowpoint will increase penetration. Season to taste . My sr1911 with bbl.bushing /comp. , 22 lb. recoil spring, flat based stop plate, 28 lb mainspring, and high speed hammer fires standard .45acp- .45 Super with factory mags and 0 stoppages if any kind . The only down side is it won't go to slidelock on the last shot. ( the slide doesn't travel that far rearward) Underwood and Buffalo Bore 185s is what I shoot, and I like it a lot.

I cant speak on 1911s, but a 24lb recoil spring, and a +10% mag spring will convert a 1st generation m&p into a reliable 45 super. I recommend a muzzle brake but ive fired a bunch without it.

EXCELLENT VIDEO. With the CORRECT projectile, ie Hornady XTP, Winchester Ranger bonded or nonbonded 230g, 255g Hardcast thus round penatrates deep and IS EXACTLY WHAT THE 45AUTO SHOULD BE!! The projectiles Underwood uses are Nosler bullets and they SUCK when pushed at these higher velocities. Doubletap makes excellent cartridges fir this round. They named them 450 SMC (short magnum cartridges). They use cut down 308 Winchester brass with small rifle primers. This is my preferred carry round. Compared to the 357 or 44mag the recoil IS VERY MANAGEABLE in MY OPINION. I stick with Buffalo Bore or Doubletap as my ammunition companies.

Great video! It is great to see content about the 45 Super. For those interested in the 45 Super, a Glock 21 with KKM or Lone Wolf barrel and 22# recoil spring is perfect. I've run mine like this for years and it handles both the Super and regular 45 ACP with perfect reliability. You MAY also need a 15% or 20% stronger mag spring from Wolff or AGP arms for the mag you load the 45 Super in.

Hornady has upgraded the XTP in .45 to what they are calling XTP Mag. It is modified specifically to hold together better at higher velocities like those in 454 Cassul, 460 S&W and probably would do really well in 45 Super. Underwood is still using the old XTPs.

This is the same problem we've been dealing with in the 10mm Auto for decades; bullets are designed for traditional duty cartridges and pushing them 200 fps faster results in better paper ballistics but shitty bullet performance limits your ability to realize the full potential of the cartridge. A bullet that underpenetrates is of no use defensively or for hunting large game. I have found the heavier Hornady XTP offerings perform well at higher velocity than most common defensive handgun bullets. You may not get perfectly expanded flowers like the HST, but the XTP will give useful expansion with excellent penetration and weight retention. Penetration is important for good terminal effect. The 200 gr XTP load from Underwood has been a consistent performer on game from my Glock 20, and is my EDC load. I suggest you try a 230 gr XTP up around 1150 fps grom the .45 Super and see if that does a little better than this 185 gr, presumably Nosler, JHP. Nine inches is dismal and unacceptable for a defensive handgun load.
@oldplace2844

That's a lot of energy being dumped in 9 inches. The shock would have to be significant. If the velocity and weight is accurate, the hydrostatic shock would be high. Energy is transferred to the surrounding material. One of the lifelike torsos may reveal what the shock would do.

Great video thanks for doing this. I'm not sure about HPs as I dont have experience with real targets, but I dont think the performance is what I need. I think HPs in part were for stopping a bullet to not over penetrate hitting innocent bystanders in an urban setting. To me for my use - which is mainly outdoors wild critter defense - I like hard cast lead with a flat point. I choose bullet weight, meplat and velocity based on what I think I need. I started loading 45 Super when I moved to Montana and lived in Grizzly country. I'm starting to think there must be a formula for the size of the meplat, the weight of the bullet and with velocity to equal depth of penetration. It was funny to see only 9 inches penetration with an HP and the old boring RN just bores right through. Somewhere in between the extremes is the perfect bullet for your needs. That said I never felt the 185gr was a 'sweet spot' for 45 but more of a compromise. I think you can get top performance from a 200gr and with CFE Pistol or Unique you can easily get beyond 10mm velocities...but its 45 :)
@GregAlcorn

@@GregAlcorn If you get a 230gr bullet to 950-1000fps - which is not uncommon in handloaded P+ ammunition you would probably feel differently. I was stuck on the 200gr and didnt like 230gr until I started pushing it and really like it at the speed for performance and accuracy. If you can find an old LBT 45-230 LFN you might find it to be your all time favorite.

I think 12-18 inches is excessive. Also just my opinion but if a bullet exits the target that was lost energy and liability. I’d rather dump 700ftlbs into 9 inches than 400ftlbs into 12inches. Plus think of it this way if your target dept is only about 6inches, that means 45 super will get to dump 75% of total energy into that realistic size target so 525 ftlbs vs 45 acp 200ftobs 50% of its total energy into target.

I know that my HK USP 45 Tactical is rated for it, but I have been hesitant to try it. Anyone have experience shooting 45 Super through an HK USP 45?

I'm not sure which ones but I know it's more than one. If the book says do it I say go for it😁😁😁👍👊🦃

Hoplopheil has done it. Possibly a recoil spring change might be needed.

The HK USP's in 45 ACP will handle the 45 Super without modification, strong design, but I don't think HK officially supports the use. I carry with the 45 Super 135gr. Xtreme Defender Solid Monolithic Hunting & Self Defense Ammo. No modifications, good shooter. Versatility of having 45 ACP, 45 ACP +P, 45 ACP +P+, 45 Super, & 450 SMC (Although I haven't tried this one). I chose this path instead of 10mm. Why buy an new gun when you simply want a few extra ft. lbs of energy at the time of delivery. Note (in red) from Underwood. "45 Super is externally/dimensionally identical to 45 ACP or 45 ACP +P and is designed to be used in 45 ACP Semi-Auto pistols that have been modified with a stronger than normal recoil spring and a shock buffer, plus a few other modifications. While you can shoot 45 Super out of some stock 45 ACP +P pistols such as the Glock 21, HK USP, or the full-sized all steel 1911, it can cause excess wear and tear on the firearm if you do not have them modified to handle the extra pressure and slide velocity of the 45 Super."

Your analysis left out the fact that the bullet is not engineered for that velocity. I contend Underwood is ripping people off with these loads in that you get better performance with a 45+p that allows the projectiles to do what they were designed to do originally. I imagine that unless a manufacturer designs hollow points that are harder to open or peddle except at these higher velocities these rds are a waste of $. . Pretty extravagant endeavor for a semi wildcat rd. I’m suffering with buyers remorse for buying their 185 grain 460 Rowland hollow points that flatten even sooner ( closer to 1500 fps). On the other hand the Hardcast or Lehigh penetrators are a different matter and those are my first choice for a hunting sidearm. I’m sure that the hollow points would still be a bad day for any 2 legged varmint but kinda pointless except for penetration concerns.

I can agree thst they are not the best for proper expansion. Copper monos are a great choice. 1 exception we noticed was DoubleTap 230gr controlled expansion 450smc. That stuff was amazing for a jhp. Hardcast also does well in the hotrod versions. Thanks for watching!👍🦃👊

Ok, put a Carhartt jacket, and two other inner layers, what is it going to do. I realize that you don't have the funds to test every situation. Hmm, not sure if it's worth it.

At 1000fps that bullet would perform ok.

Also, JHP in .45 super is pointless. Absolutely wasted effort. .45 super is best as hard cast.

I almost fell asleep between your shots. Fix yourself. Learn to shoot fast and accurate. Wasting time between shots does nothing for accuracy or defense except failure. Otherwise, nice test. Thank you.

Say a 120-130 grain hardcast with a wide meplat at max 45 super velocities would cause a nice big shock wave, not need to rely on expansion, and dump all it energy very fast. Probably the best self defense system for 2 legged critters using 45 super. Underwood uses their copper spiral flutes but woukd prefer just a flat big ol meplat front to the round.

That's a nosler bullet Underwood needs to quit using nosler bullets with 45 Soopers that's all there is to it that's why you never see a nosler bullet in a 10 mm at least I haven't why you're getting that minimal penetration they need to start using a different bullet with the 45 super

I don't consider 45 super significant recoil. I don't even consider 44 magnum significant recoil.
