Congrats on the baby,! She also has the same name as my favorite British hot rod. I will buck the general trend in the comments and say, the owners version of the Open 40 is one of my top 3 contenders. A personal preference of mine is the ride by wire helm that supposedly eliminates some of the 'washing machine' like control comparatively speaking to other production vessels but to each their own (and their budgets)! All the best to you and your family and hopefully, you can do a test sail of the 40!

Morgan is adorable, congrats! The boat, while it does have some nice features, not so much. Helms are too out in the open, heads aren't really separate showers, just moved over so you'll still get the rest of the area wet. The saloon is too small for a liveaboard. I prefer the Seawind, but truthfully I'd go for an Exquisite X over any boat I've ever seen. Of course, money would be a problem! LOL

I would like to see the polars on this boat. At 40', I doubt very much it is in the 15-20 knot range; more like 8-12 knots max. The Seawind 1260, according to Seawind, which is 42' and is also considered a performance oriented cat, is around 10-14 knots. I think the 1160 is pretty close to this boat performance wise, and the dual helms on the Seawinds are far superior visibility wise, and they are protected. I would take an 1160 over this boat without hesitation. And with the lifting cockpit door and galley down, the Seawind utilizes its space much better, with the 1160 having a lower base price. Congrats on the baby girl!
@billmorris2613
@billmorris2613 3 жыл бұрын
It does not make sense to me that there is no place to steer the boat with full forward visibility. I think that is very dangerous. I would not charter this boat, much less consider buying it. Also wish you would mention the price. There is no description to read.

Grats on the new crew! As for the Nautitech... I really like the lines of the exterior. I think they are really good looking boats from the outside, but everything else about them seems like it's done as an afterthought. I'm not even sure what their goal was with this design. It doesn't seem to have any feature that stands out as "oh, this is why they did it this way" other than having a large (and rather uninspired) cockpit area. You can say "performance" was their goal, except that it's heavier than a Seawind 1260 that's half a meter longer (and has much better interior space utilization AND a cockpit that feels much roomier) with less sail area. And the hulls don't look to be much finer than the 1260s either. I think Nautitech makes for a good day sailer cat, but I can't imagine anyone spending serious time onboard. The interior is inefficient and cramped, the nav station is basically never going to be used, the cabins are basically coffins, and those silly outboard helms... They're probably great when you say "hey, tomorrow's supposed to be a great day for sailing, let's drive down to the marina and take the boat out" but if you're in the middle of the atlantic you're going to curse those helms every minute. I don't remember whose video it was, but I saw someone ask one of the sales reps at a show what the advantages of the outboard aft helms were and all they could come up with was "great for docking"... I suppose if you only ever take the boat out for the day, you probably spend a larger percentage of your time onboard docking, lol. The only thing I can imagine that inspires companies to use that helm location is that they are coming from monohull design where twin aft helms (seemingly set up to encourage falling off the back in rough seas) is almost ubiquitous and the concept of a center cockpit is almost entirely gone. And honestly, the idea that "they're fine because you will usually be using autopilot" doesn't hold water. There are plenty of times that aren't emergencies where you might need to manually steer, and those are the WORST times to have a helm perched at the top of a set of stairs without any real protection from the elements. That's like saying "it's okay that I don't have a bulletproof vest, 90% of the time I'm not getting shot at"... It's also worth noting that those hulls are mostly so narrow because it's only a 40' boat, and judging by the width of the aft beds, probably has a fairly average fineness ratio somewhere around 9.5-10.5. 11-12 is really the top end for performance cruising cats, with >12 being something I would consider beyond cruising territory until you get into the really long cats. Anything narrower than about 1m at the waterline isn't a cruising cat.

Yuup. Imagine ur anchored in a sheltered small bay and all is beautiful until ur swarmed with evening mosquitos and u have nowhere to sit and eat? Or it's blowing froth and gale in the northern latitudes and u have no sheltered and warm place to sit and eat? Seems like an useless concept to me.

@SteifWood 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidwestwood5968 I suppose ur just a sissy sailor, only knows tropical sailing (everything south of NYC), and have no clue what I'm talking about. I said in the "northern latitudes" and by that I mean this cat is useless with this open and exposed helm position. Ofc I'm 100% familiar with remote autopilots, but those are close to useless when maneuvering, especially at sail, in close quarters, heavy wind and freezing temps.

How would you get that life raft out of that compartment? What does it weigh? I hope you get a huge adrenaline rush from your boat sinking or catching fire, because I think it would be a "mother lifting a car off of her child" kind of effort to hoist that thing out of that compartment, through the cockpit and into the open where you could inflate it. Definitely not what I'd want to be doing if I were ever in a situation where I needed a life raft. Probably not as bad if the cat is inverted, but if the wind and seas are bad enough to flip your cat, do you really want to be standing on top of it trying to power lift that case out?
@johnherleman9732

That "kitchen" is an accident waiting to happen. I can see a steaming hot pan going all over as the cook accidentally steps off of the top step. In rolling seas, there would be no way to prevent it. This looks like a boat designed for charter not for live-aboards. In my mind, the builders need to give this design a lot more thought.
@Jacob-W-5570
@Jacob-W-5570 3 жыл бұрын
Didn't like this one at all. We want a big outdoor sit space, lets sacrofice everything else for it. nav stations are horrible, no security to the aft, no visibility to the otherside at all. Interious was a couch and a galley cramped in there, they might as well just left that glass door and pannel out of it and keep it fully open.

The outboard helms won't get used except for docking and general maneuvering in crowded anchorages, around reefs , thru passages etc but they will also get used when it's really shitty and you need to steer because the auto pilot can't manage or whatever so unprotected is not going to be much fun as a Performance' cat is going to throw a lot of spray at speed. Are they trying to emulate double helms on monohulls? I would much prefer just one good steering position with plenty of protection when needed. Les complication with steering too. ( I don't want a flybridge helm or the lines fed to the helm station.) Other than that and the lack of a proper below deck helm to sit at ,plan passages , go over progress etc. It seems to be a well thought out ordinary charter cat. Not seeing the special attraction . What am I missing that you think it's great? Cheers Warren

I sailed one of these things. Many positives but that helm position is aweful. In a choppy sea we got soaked. On passage i know from people who've crossed the Atlantic that it was horrible and hand steering was torture. In many other ways, lovely boat that is a nice compromise of comfort and performance but that helm puts it behind the competition

It's thought that the name Morgan (which is of Welsh origin) means, "sea chief", "sea protector", "sea defender" or "sailor/captain". Pretty good name for a daughter, all things considered! By the way, did Morgan sign a waver for you to use her likeness in this video???? LOL! Beautiful little girl, congratulations!

Having sailed many offshore miles in monohulls and a 51 ft catamaran, I would never do another offshore voyage in a "cat". The motion of a "cat" in a seaway is most unpleasant as one hull is trying to go up a wave while the other may be trying to go down. The nacelle between the two hull is also frequently hit by waves with a loud band and jarring motion. Moving around the deck is most unpredictable and requires you to make quick moves from handhold to handhold. A "cat" is the only yacht on which we ever experienced motion sickness. Lovely space and amenities, but not my cup of tea for offshore.

Just my opinion but outboard helms for a day sail is fine, not for cruising. The starboard hull access being in the galley makes me imagine someone falling into it in rough weather while using the galley. I cannot imagine anyone owning this for more than a few months while actually cruising, I can imagine someone really enjoying this on a day cruise from marina to marina.

Dolphin seats are not protected. 40 feet is a little short of ideal for a cruising couple. How's the construction? Do like the low boom and the big coach roof, but the helmet stations should be protected.
