The Ruger Super Redhawk ALASKAN with a 2.5 inch barrel chambered in 454 casull vs. the Smith and Wesson 460 Performance Center with a 3.5 inch barrel. Both guns are very well made and made to shoot the highest pressure rounds you can squeeze into a handgun.
We give a length comparison, measure the weights, measure the trigger pull, and give an overall comparison of the guns.
The ruger wins in single action trigger pull and it has an extra shot in the cylinder.
The smith wins in sights (the HI VIZ stock front sight is very nice compared to the ruger black on black).
Both are amazing guns and I am excited to get a range video once deer season is over.

I own Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in 480 and 44 mag. I choose 6 rounds instead of 5 anyday for wilderness life or death situations.🤠🦖

That Performance Center model is sweet. The 460 S&W magnum is an awesome round that can handle lighter bullets at higher velocity and heavy bullets at high velocity!!!

Both beautiful revolvers. I've had and shot both extensively. Both super accurate, with the S&W a slight edge over the Ruger. The S&W 460 shoots the 460 Hornady factory 200gr FTX with super accuracy. But the advantage of the Alaskan is, more compact / lighter for carry. (I can carry it concealed), the extra 6th round. The Ruger Alaskan frame & cylinder are super strong. Ruger was able to do a 6 round cylinder with the use of a special Stainless Steel, (Carpenters Steel). Proof loads up to 95,000 in each cylinder, a full 30,000 over 454 casull max. pressure! The barrel is also made with Carpenters Steel.

I give a slight edge to the Ruger because of the strength and the 6th round. I also live where there are no brown bears and only occasional black bears, so even the 454 is a little overkill. I am fond of both companies and own several of both of their guns, but the fact that Ruger still proof tests theirs always makes me lean their way. Thanks for the support. The Performance Center 460 S&W shoots 454 Casull and weighs more so recoil of the 454 Casull would be less than the Ruger Alaskan.

Thanks for this! I’ve watched and enjoyed you and family shoot the Ruger (Outstanding:) and am looking for evidence to rule out the S&W (and Taurus for that matter). Lots of data presented here. I’ll assume slightly less recoil for length and mass of the S&W for now.

Nice comparison, i been trying to decide between these two. I love the idea of being able to fire super magnums but i don't know if its worth the size penalty

Ran about 20 rounds of 460 loads after this video. Definitely kicks harder than the Alaskan. Haven't fired 454 in it yet, but it's heavier, so would kick less with those.

I have the 5 inch S&W 460 magnum and I’ll tell you it puts a smile on my face every time I shoot it and it’s definitely a crowd pleaser when I’m shooting it in the indoor shooting range. I’ve been told it sounds like a grenade going off.

I have jotted this down and will shoot the two side by side for a recoil comparison. Shooting 460, there is definitely more recoil out of the performance center than the Alaskan. Even though the ruger is lighter and shorter, the 460 kicks harder because of all the extra powder. It is not for the inexperienced or faint of heart. Please keep an eye on new videos for that one.

Everyone who compairs big bores always compaires the 469 and the 500 to the 454 but nobody comoaires to the 480 ruger

I compare these two because I am a 45 caliber nut, it is my favorite caliber. I don't own a 480 ruger or 475 linebaugh, but if I had access to the gun (or a person with one) I would love to compare them. I especially like the 475 linebaugh because it can also fire 480 ruger. Definitely an underrated cartridge/caliber.

??? QUESTION ??? Does anyone out there have experience carrying the 460 backpacking (40 - 45 lb backpack) with a chest holster - hiking 5 to 10 miles per day - for 10 days? I carry my glock 20 in this manner with no problem - but I'm concerned that if I only have time for one shot 10 mm may not be enough - I've met two Montana Grizzlies on foot and have been lucky so far.

@@savagejoy3708 why the 460 over the 454. The Alaskan in 454 is way more punch than 10mm and is lighter than the 460 by a pound. Regardless of what you carry, I suggest hard cast flat point ammo, that will penetrate skull and heavy bone while still penetrating deep. I have no experience backpacking like you describe.

One pound lighter makes a serious difference for sure when backpacking - The odds of being attacked by a Griz is very low - however - it makes no sense to go into bear country unarmed - many have been injured or killed because of unpreparedness.

I have shot it, but not made a range video yet. It is definitely a handful compared to the alaskan. If you really enjoy shooting the alaskan and don't think the recoil is bad, you will like the 500 snub.
