In this video we install the cam bearings and find out the cam journals were not board out correctly. We had to turn down the outside diameter of the cam bearings. We then install the frost plugs and crank. This motor is from the 1973 Chevelle SS 454 big block 4 speed car. The car was a barn find one owner car and is 1 of 8 sold in Canada.

My buddy bought a new 73 Chevelle when we were in high school-it was the only new car in the school-it had the 350, and was pretty fast, but we thought it was ugly! Over the years, I have grown to like them. Cool project!

you always put in the back bearing first and work your way to the front of the block and some engines have different size bearings front to back EG the back bearing is slightly smaller than the next so make sure you have the proper bearing going to the proper spot. some engines have the same size but you need to watch for that if doing it yourself

The short block assembly is a good time to consider the next steps. I know you guys are old school and have a zero $ budget, but would you consider FI over carb if you had the proper equipment? FITech? Holley? You should shop around for a sponsorship, Canadian vloggers are the hottest thing on YT in 2020 and once the word gets out on you guys, lookout. Merry Christmas and HNY to all you guys, especially the young lad with the smoky voice. Keep on encouraging the young. Stay safe!

We did think about hot rodding this engine a little more, but with it being so rare, 1 of 8 sold in Canada, that we are going to keep it as stock looking as possible. It would be nice to receive sponsor ship like that, may be soon? Merry Christmas to you and your family also.

Why does every one call them frost plugs when the truth is they are core plugs from the casting so they can remove the sand after casting the block.

Hi guys, so you say you ascended the outside of the cam bearings to make them fit within two thousands. I know it's would suck to have to take that into a shop especially at this time of the year plus the cost of the b o r e. That was suck to. Curious the way you went with sanding the cam bearings rather than mailing down the journals on the cam itself as the bearings are so thin anyway although I guess that may change the weight of the whole thing but I don't think that would matter much anyway that's an interesting conclusion on what you did extremely intelligent I can't believe that somebody has Chevy would have such a bad day. LMAO either somebody pissed that work or off or like you said he was retiring that day who knows for sure you'll never know the truth. Can you imagine somebody that didn't understand everything just slamming that together oh yeah that's probably what they did the last time. Anyway guys you and your families have a very merry Christmas. Stay safe stay well and as always God bless.
@pennyshotrodscustoms
@pennyshotrodscustoms 3 жыл бұрын
We figured it would be the easiest to sand down the bearings, and also if we made a mistake it is a lot cheaper to replace the bearings than a cam. My cousin Ryan the machinist thinks when the block was being built at the factory and they came across this problem they just put smaller diameter bearings in. Cheaper then sending it back to the machine shop and getting line bored again. Merry Christmas to you and your family also Joseph.

@@pennyshotrodscustoms thank y'all for the reply, I really didn't know you can Sand bearings like that to tell you the truth. I thought that they were Way Too Thin to do something like that, I guess I'm not as up on that kind of stuff is you guys are. You know it's kind of funny how that motor wound up like that, never know the whole truth about it. I'm just wondering if Chevrolet would fix the problem for free??? Probably not. I guess the secret of them being f*** ups at quality control is out. Not just Chevrolet though GM had a buddy that built a 289 one time and he used standard bearings on his pistons and guess what the same thing happened it locked up though would not turn until he pulled that piston out in size the journal on the crank and it was okay, it was actually a couple of rods. You should have seen the stink that is Daddy a triple Certified mechanic raised with Ford.
