45596 heads to the Westcountry in glorious Spring sunshine for the second weekend in a row.
Starting at Victory Level Crossing at Allerford, just after Norton Fitzwarren and the junction to the W.S.R., the immaculate ex LMS Jubilee gets into her stride after an unscheduled stop and heads on across the wheat-fields at Knapp Farm on the way to Wellington and the climb to Whiteball.
After a challenging drive down the M5 and A38 through heavy Bank Holiday traffic I have little time to set up at Hazzard Farm as the train passes Totnes 15 minutes early and is soon heard tackling Tigley Bank before coming into view on Rattery Bank. Look out for the Hawthorn blossom which seems to be especially abundant this year in this quintessentially South Devon rural scene . From 2:22 onwards the fireman starts shovelling (you can see him hard at it from 2:40) and the effect on the exhaust is obvious from here on.
Finally for the return leg I chose to shoot into the glancing sun shining down the Teign Estuary for a very atmospheric finale.

Seeing her in green and amid the lush Devon hills emphasises how much of William Stanier's GWR roots show in his LMS designs

Alan, you caught that deep throated, hairs on the back of your neck sound on Rattery, pure magic👍👍👍👍 Mmmm, M5, that'll teach you to sneak over the county line away from the blossom😂😂😂 Loving it as usual.

Alan - you do us proud. Not only a wonderful video, but driving all over to make it. Hearty thanks. The 'windowless' carriage - 3rd from rear southbound, 4th from front NB would be the caterer's kitchen, etc I assume. Was it a very hot day? At 0:30 the last 3 carriages are indistinct and 'wobbly'.

Hi Peter, yes it is the catering car. The day was only 22degC but it is the air rising over the drying grass that creates the mirage effects, I have noticed it there a lot. Thank you as always for your kind feedback and questions. Best regards, Alan

Was a solid climb of Rattery, from a starting speed of about 20mph at Totnes East due to catching the previous train up. Coal was very ashy I think, we were in the second coach and could hear the cinders rattling on the roof

Hi and thank you for your "onboard" perspective. It looked pretty dusty stuff as a lot of it was going straight up the chimney. I expect the smokebox was pretty full when they reached Plymouth. Thank you for your interesting input. Kind regards, Alan

Alan Steamclips loved chasing trains, especially if a steam engine happened to be upfront. This sunshiny day, complete with a cool breeze, was no exception. The young man found a clear lineside spot, beside one of the most formidable inclines on the entire main line network: Whiteball Bank. Mayflower, LNER B1 tender engine, had struggled up this steep gradient without the aid of a banker a few years ago. What steamy was our fine fellow waiting for? Mayflower, perhaps? The sound of a high-pitched LNER whistle was heard in the distance. Alan gazed in silent surprise as LNER V2 tender engine Green Arrow came pounding up the incline, with 10 coaches in tow and no banker. Green Arrow had never come anywhere near Whiteball Bank until now. She began gradually slowing down, feeling the weight behind her. "Go on, my girl!" Alan shouted encouragingly. "You can do it!" Green Arrow whistled her thanks and kept going slowly as a snail. Alas, she stalled just over halfway up and couldn't go any further. "Bother," she muttered to herself. "Oh well, can't be good at everything. Hey! Is there a banker in the shed? I'm stuck!" Her shrill whistle for help was swiftly answered by a hooter. "No worries, my friend," tooted Bahamas the Jubilee engine. "I'll help you out." Together, the two rival-friends stormed up the incline with the 10 coaches between them. Alan had never seen this sort of scenario before, he was impressed. Another day, Alan was waiting beside Whiteball Bank again. This time, Clun Castle and King Edward 2nd came barking up the incline with 14 coaches in tow behind them. The Great Western duo made easy meat of the gradient, in true Swindon Fashion. No steep incline would ever defeat these two in a hurry, that was for sure. A remarkable sight for our dear friend Alan to behold.
