Got about 400 HST'S 45acp 230 +P for my SHIELD 45acp!!! Absolutely DEVASTATING round!!! Would NOT wanna get hit with them. Nor would I want to try and dig em out of someone!!! BIG NASTY WOUND from a BIG BEAUTIFUL FLOWER!!!!

There’s no doubt about how much better the HST expanded!! And the penetration was more than adequate. Myself I really like the Hornady the wound channel was decent as was the penetration luckily for me I have plenty of both. Nice shooting and thanks for showing us these two winners

I disagree. 11 inches of penetration is below what is considered the minimum amount of acceptable penetration. And this test didn't even include denim or other clothing. If you have to use your ammo against a big person or someone with heavy clothing like a leather jacket then you need deep penetration. That's why the FBI says that 12-16 inches of penetration is ideal with the preferred depth being at the higher end of penetration.

@@ki-te9842 Clear Ballisitics gel averages 35% deeper penetration and less expansion than FBI type ordnance gel. If a bullet can't make 12" in Clear Ballistics gel then it's getting even less in ordnance gel.

I would use either. In fact my dad handoaded his primary home defense 45 loads with 230 XTP. My daughters & I switched from Critical Duty to HST a few years ago in our Shields. My chrono out of a 3.3" was around 850fps. So I am suspect of the lower readings. Great comparison. Thank you.

I am a Hornady person. I like their products but the HST would be fine too. During the ammo shortage I guess the answer is whatever is available. You get what you get and you don't get upset. Your test shows that either one is a good choice and neither is a bad choice. Thanks for the video and keep em coming.

I have a few boxes of the HST Deep. I am definitely impressed by the expansion on it in that gel!!! As for the Hornady loads, penetration is good, but I would have to go with HST for making a little bit more of "interior pudding". LOL Damned good test Brother! Thanks for this! A local ammo shop had these HST +p in 50 packs for under $25 so I stockpiled. I was disappointed in the velocity test, but feel better after the jelly block results.

FBI requires 13”. They choose 13” because of the average distance from the furthest possible entrance point in the body to critical organs. 13” is for shoulder to heart. I reload and can pick up XTPs for $25/100. So that’s what I will be using. HST was beautiful.

Excellent video brother. Both rounds would get the job done, but I think the HST's perfect expansion gives it the edge. I need to go measure an old school Black Talon that I tested back in the 90's I think the HST has it beat.

Originally, the designation for the XTP was Extra Terminal Penetration and later they changed it. The XTP worked perfectly as designed. The HST worked perfectly as designed. But in reality, penetration, penetration, penetration.

I have loaded XTP's in 9mm Luger, 10mm Auto, .44 Mag, .45ACP and .454 Casull and they have never failed to get done what we needed them to do. I like the HST's and would not feel slighted if they were loaded in my magazines, but XTP's are readily available, are accurate through my firearms and they work. If I were to shoot factory loaded ammunition, I would take the penetration over expansion every time and twice on Sunday.

I load Hornady XTP’s in 9mm Mak, 9mm Luger, 40S&W, 45acp, and 10mm. It’s great for self defense, hunting, and it’s very consistent, and accurate. But I use mostly HST for conceal carry because it’s devastating!

XTP's are a great choice. XTP's and Critical Duties are the best projectiles to use in 45 ACP. Big bullet and deep penetration is what wins fights. You can't stop the threat if you can't reliably hit vital organs, the only way to hit vital organs is to have deep penetration.

Looks like the +P is the way to go for HST I just watched another video shooting the standard pressure 45 HST into clear gel, barely any expansion and went to over 20 inches. Seems like the HST always performs better out of the 9 or 40 though. Good test love your videos!

You don't want to stagger ammo, it should always be 1 type of ammo, because if you do need to defend yourself - that staggering will look bad in court.

That mostly depends on where you live... or at least where any seld defense action takes place. Here in MO, it's not much of a concern. My only concern about staggering would be a shift in POI or recoil impulse difference that could throw your aim off. As long as they are about the same and both feed reliably, why not? It isn't something I do but whatever lights your candle! Cheers, jc

thanks for informative video. John Browning's original recipe was 200 grain bullet at around 900 feet per second. I think a bullet of about this weight could be made to perform well in commander. Incidentally, the original Government Model 5" version only had about a half inch of space where the recoil spring is uncontrolled which is negligible, but, the commander has a full inch of uncontrolled space in a G.I. Version so is more correctly configured with a full length guide rod.

Good info, as usual! I'm a little disappointed in the HST as I would assume the +P would be a bit hotter, velocity wise, and technically speaking it didn't penetrate all that well. I like to see 16 to 18" in my ammo. The XTP performed as expected, with the petals folding back along the shank, limiting expansion but still penetrating well. I think that Hornady has improved the XTP substantially since the older ones used to seperate the jacket and core as often as not, which of course are the bullets I happen to have. I just got a couple hundred new XTP's for the 10mm so I'll be testing the minimum opening velocity and of course, whatever max I can get out of them, too. Cheers, jc

The problem with hst is that they are criminally underloaded. Even in 10mm they don't exceed 1000 fps which is a joke. What good does that nice opened up mushroom do when it lacks penetration and velocity. I sure would not trust them hydrashocks if a 300 fbs crackhead would attacking me. I'd go with hornady. They have required 1.5× expansion but alot more penetration (still within the FBI recommendations).

XTP is probably the better projectile for “woods” carry. The HST looks very similar to the expansion seen in some Winchester Ranger slugs I’ve seen recovered (40 S&W).

Thems hst's seem to be the winner for me. They have been super hard to find in my area tho. Lately I've been scooping up thems critical duty 9mm in 135gr +p. Those seem to be reliably coming in at my local academy.

Interesting results. Again, those rounds were tested at the factory in a 5" barrel which is very typical. It gives an inflated fps number to put on the box. At about a 75- 100 fps loss with each inch in barrel length lost those chrono'ed about what is expected. The expansion of both those rounds is very respectable. I shoot a 185gr Critical Defense out of my 4" barrel as it has good fps and rapid next shot target acquisition. I'm gonna have to get some HST.

The general rule is about 150 feet per second loss for ever inch shorter barrel. However, it also depends on whether it is s fast burning or slow burning powder dn where the powder willnachieve maximum expansion. Once it reaches maximum expansion, additional barrel length will just start slowing the bullet down from friction and rifling drag.

I think the xtp is Hornadys Golden 🎫 Ticket. It’s an excellent hunting round, one of the best with proper velocity. The HST is still King among conceal carry and law enforcement. I think the only threat to Federal’s baby is the Underwood loaded extreme defender. Another great video Tools!

Hey tools when u get ready to load your xtps, what I always do is order some 45 super brass. And I load them to to a middle ground between 45 acp max loads an 45 super loads. I like having the thicker brass, but I don't like pushing the loads to the ragged edge of full house 45 super. I like to run my 230 grain xtps at 1050 ish and the 185s at 1150

XtP reason, using xtp in my 44 special and 44 mag I get devistating expansion on testing and devistating damage with 180 xtp 44 special on Live game.i haven't killed nothing with the same 180 gr in my 44 mag revolver but shot the same saboted xtp in my inline and side hammer muzzleloaders probably over 30 years and taken many deer at 44 mag pistol volictys with the most devistating damage to vital area than any of my center fire rifles . I enjoyed the video. but the way my 44 special is a Rossi model 720 3 inch barrel and loads around 1000-1050 fps about even with buffalo bore ammunition.papa wishing you well and merry Christmas

I'd take the HST for general carry/defense. I understand the need for penetration, but a quarter inch isn't going to make me lose any sleep.

Good video..I like the federal HST with the full expansion …penetration is good but a larger wound cavity will stop the threat faster…

Both are extremly impressive i think id stick with hst when it comes to self defense just because ive seen the xtps not expand when there's some clothing involved but i think that xtp would make a excellent hunting cartridge for a pistol

Those velocities for the HSTs are surprisingly slow. Standard pressure 230 gr HSTs do >800 fps out of my Glock 30s with a 3.78" barrel. You should be getting close to 900 fps from that barrel length and +Ps. But, still, that was impressive expansion from your pistol.

11 inches in bare gel for the HST is a little bit shallow. 11 inches is below the minimum of what is considered acceptable. That's why I like XTP's and Critical Duty for 45 ACP. It's already a big bullet to begin with, you get expansion making the big bullet even bigger and you get deep penetration. The way to reliably stop a threat is to hit vital organs and the way to reliably hit vital organs is to have deep penetration. Most people think HST's are pretty so they prefer them but what wins fights is putting lead into the vitals with deep penetration.

Yep people are to hung up on how pretty the hst looks but looks don’t matter win u got hot lead penetrating deep into a body ,what do the thing the person getting shot cares how pretty the round is hell no they ant

I keep HSTs for my Glock 21 and 30, and the HST is my default choice for hollow points unless there is a point of impact shift (my Glock 23 shoots Gold Dots more accurately) or I generally can't find HST in a caliber I need (i.e., I use Hornady for 357 Sig as I haven't found HSTs for it)

Brother, what happened back there in the background did you shoot that tree down there one M4 five HST’s and blow it over about 3 feet off the ground look like you blew the trunk in half. Those HST 230 grain plus p's are powerful bro.

Sorry to keep commenting on an old video but it just showed up in my feed. As far as XTP's, I always got better expansion from a 230gr than I did a 200 gr XTP
