(46100 & 46115) Two LMS Royal Scots Up Shap Back To Back !

In a preservation first we witness and capture two LMS Royal Scots heading over Shap back to back within 20 minutes of each other. A scene like this wouldn't of been seen possibly since the 1950's or 60's ?? and this was a spectacle not to be missed. Both locos are seen on the upper part of Shap with 46100 Royal Scot heading up first and is captured in fine voice hauling the Lakelander. Scots Guardsman would be the next northbound train up the West Coast Mainline and all was going well until a couple of wheel slips pegged the throaty Scot back which in turn hampered the loco for the rest of the climb to Shap Summit, although the momentum was lost 46115 was still in good shape and not in trouble as it forged its way to the summit in fine voice.

Said somewhere a while ago that The Guardsman had TWELVE on.... WRONG?!!! Only ELEVEN but unassisted . Fine performance twer too

Liam & Phil, A great video. Andy and myself were travelling on the Lakelander which looked the quickest climb. This was thanks to a stop at Graygrigg where on departure the 47 was really pushing hard but then appeared to power down after Greenholme. The speed at Shap summit was 30mph. Regards, John

Great video. An interesting difference in the audio between the two "same" locos, at similar locations, although obviously 46100 was travelling a bit quicker than 46115

Brilliant spectacle Liam & Phil, great to see these two creating such noise! I was on the 390 preceding these two and there was such a crowd on Shap lol. Although 46115 seems to have been the slower climb, her recovery seemed better as 46100 passed Penrith at 63mph compared to 46115's 70mph. Regards, Dan

I'm curious, when these locomotives were in regular service over Shap before the end of steam in the 1960s did they usually get loaded with 11 coaches? Although both are no doubt in excellent condition it seems irreverent to load two esteemed old ladies with such heavy and possibly unusually weighty baggage.

Hi Nick, I grew up with steam in the 50’s and early 60’s, heavy loads were quite commonplace. A couple of years ago I rode on a CME with Scots Guardsman with twelve on, unassisted ( mercifully) and the loco was completely untroubled. What wonderful machines these old ladies are! Great filming, by the way.
