This Saphos Trains early Spring tour from Holyhead to Cardiff (steam hauled Hereford, Cardiff, Crewe) presented a chance for us to brush the cobwebs off the camera gear whilst enjoying a couple of days in Wales around St David’s Day.
Both sides of the climb to Llanvihangel summit are captured here at two pairs of public footpath crossings close to each other. Locations for the southward leg at Pandy are Offah’s Dyke crossing and Powell crossing, then Llantilio Pertholey and Llantilio Pertholey 162 crossings for the return northward leg. The weather in the hills was cold, grey and showery throughout the day but the sound and ample exhaust combined to provide a spectacle which more than made up for the discomfort as 46100 attacked the inclines with regulator wide open.
Note: 46100 crosses from England into Wales over the river Monnow (Afon Mynwy) at 1:09
Chapters:
0:00 Powell foot crossing
1:53 Offah’s Dyke foot crossing
3:03 Llantilio Pertholey foot crossing
4:05 Llantilio Pertholey 162 foot crossing

Thank you Stephen for such kind feedback. I rarely get to film in the cold in South Devon, so this was a chance to film some decent exhaust steam! Best regards, Alan P.S. am loving your "Perfect Conditions" series.

Good job, Mate! The first time the engine went by, I did say a little 'wow' out loud - something about it got to me. 😀 Incidentally... 😁 ...A very good friend of mine, and photographer, met you the day you filmed and is in this. That made me really smile! So, thank you for the smiles. Much appreciated 🙂❤✌

Excellent clips; that's how it should be seen, at full speed. Memories of my youth in Lancaster Castle Station in the 1950s. I was with the crowds at Cardiff

Thank you for your kind and much appreciated comment Mike. Nice that you got to see her close up and you were probably a lot warmer in the crowd than I was out in the country! Best regards, Alan

. . . . and he's back in the saddle!!! 👍👍 Ah, the power and the glory of the LMS in the wet Welsh Marches, excellent as ever Alan, you certainly blew the cobwebs away this time (we just pop down the road, not another country😀😀) Hope you're wet weather gear was up to the job!! Many thanks.

Hi Bob, it's nice to be back to your fun and supportive comments. Sure, the weather could have been better but then again, it is Wales and so could have been a hell of a lot worse!! Best regards, Alan

A rare occasion where you are free from the frustration of being bowled. You ought to be so lucky, lucky, lucky. I do love LMS steam engines, like Royal Scot, with their nice hooter. However, not to make cute little Scot here jealous, I admit I love the shrill echoing Swindon whistle more. One reason why I love God's Wonderful Railway best of all, I guess.😂

You're brave calling it a hooter, I got a right old b******ing when I made that reference on another vid. It's not even remotely like a whistle. I shall remain impartial on the LMS v GWR front, dodgy territory!!!!

Hi Kelly. I think that I can best describe the Royal Scot class as a "pretty" design, they look just right to me as I like to see outside motion. However, like your good self, I am a "dyed in the wool" GWR fan and can't wait for 6024 (the King of beasts!!) to return. Best wishes, Alan

Sure, I could have adopted the (little used) Welsh spelling with an "f" but the Ordnance Survey, Google Maps, KZfaqrs and most of the rest of the population use the English spelling with a "v".
