This Saphos Trains early Spring tour from Holyhead to Cardiff (steam hauled Hereford, Cardiff, Crewe) presented a chance for us to brush the cobwebs off the camera gear whilst enjoying a couple of days in Wales around St David’s Day.
Both sides of the climb to Llanvihangel summit are captured here at two pairs of public footpath crossings close to each other. Locations for the southward leg at Pandy are Offah’s Dyke crossing and Powell crossing, then Llantilio Pertholey and Llantilio Pertholey 162 crossings for the return northward leg. The weather in the hills was cold, grey and showery throughout the day but the sound and ample exhaust combined to provide a spectacle which more than made up for the discomfort as 46100 attacked the inclines with regulator wide open.
Note: 46100 crosses from England into Wales over the river Monnow (Afon Mynwy) at 1:09
