46115 Scots Guardsman on the Santa Special at Carlisle 18 11 23 - and Carlisle by night

A rare steam train actually commencing its journey at Carlisle - rather than finishing there. The Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Co's "Settle-Carlisle Santa Steam Special" departed in the early dawn and arrived back late at night, giving me a rare opportunity to explore Carlisle station in the dark.
It was a 23-hour shift for me and I was back again the following morning so I'm now absolutely knac.... sorry - exhausted and in need of a day or two with nothing to do.

Thanks Brian. I don't often get the opportunity for night-time filming as little of interest happens at Dumfries even in the daytime, let alone after dark, so an occasion like this makes a very welcome change. Best wishes.

Thanks Stephen. It's been a LONG weekend and both the Saturday and Sunday videos took about twelve hours editing - each! - thank God for a few days' rest now. What we do for a hobby, eh? Best wishes.

I once walked into Carlisle to have a beer in between trains home to Glasgow, boy is that place a scary one on a Saturday night. That was pre-Covid utterly even so… never again. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

A long tiring day, nice night time views so worth going. I did not get to see the steam in York, I had already arranged a day out. York was absolutely packed so I would not of enjoyed tying to get a good view there.

The night-time views do make a welcome change, don't they? I heard from several people that York was fairly hectic so I'm glad on the whole that I didn't buy that ticket. Overall, it was a 23-hour day and I had just four hours sleep before setting off for the following day's Flying Scotsman - public transport on Sundays is very restricted in this part of the world. However - a few quiet days coming up - and I need them! Best wishes.

@@schoolshorts Yes I do like the lights in the trains at night. I have now seen a couple of videos at York and the platforms were packed end to end on one of them. If I had gone I think I would of got a spot not tried before outside the station. I was thinking of going out for Flying Scotsman at Leeds but woke a bit too late for a leisurely start then it began to rain steadily so I decided not to set off to Bradford for Tangmere. It is years since a steam locomotive was there and since then a shopping centre has been built on the open land I used to go to so I was looking at going to a road bridge.

Thursday Tim? I thought it was Saturday but every day can be a blur. Caught a fleeting glimpse of myself filming (safely) from my coach. From the looks of it Guardsman was getting away with a little push - all was fine until we got to Howe & Co's Siding where we were stopped for 12 mins o let the late running service train got well ahead of us. On the return we over-stayed at Hellifield for the loco change by 25 minutes - and almost caught up time until London Road where we lost 5 minutes. Still the families aboard were very happy. - not seen a jollier set of passengers.

Thursday/Saturday - that's what lack of sleep does for you. Actually, Einstein's Theory of Relativity explains how time changes with travel - well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Glad the passengers enjoyed their day.

Yes, I got a bit confused with the Thursday in the title. Had a long weekend in the Carnforth area and was in Skipton a day earlier on the Friday so definately the wrong day for me to see the special pickup at Skipton. Unfortunately had to go to Garstang to meet up with family on the Saturday otherwise might have tried to catch the special somewhere along to SC. Thanks again for catching it on video for all of us.

Thursday/Saturday.. It's getting close to the time when they take me to the vet and have me humanely destroyed! Far too many hours spent filming and editing - not enough sleeping. Fortunately there's some quiet time ahead so I can relax and concentrate on other things. Sorry you missed the special - there'll be other occasions, I'm sure. Best wishes.
