It works pretty good I use on. Now it’s not perfect but it will get close and more or less uniform lengths. Which is what we wood producers are looking for. The nice part for me is I don’t need to pre mark anything or try and eyeball off a marl on the bar. Just nose the bar to the log and put the laser dot on the edge of the last cut and go. I’ll have to get my tape measure out tomorrow and get a reading but based off my old measuring stick it’s with in a half inch to an inch of 16”.

Great video sir, I personally have one on my Stihl MS-311. Was given to me but the guy that makes them, gave away a handful for people to try out. Was really neat to when found out he's only 10min from my place. I wouldn't say I'm in love with it but I don't hate it, have cut about 6 cord of wood with it and only complaint is that I find that over time the laser kinda moves and eventually some logs end up being more like 17in or 15in rather than 16 (which is not preferred as I sell a lot of the wood I cut). Also noticed with the spring system on the stihl the cut point with fluctuate a bit depending if I'm holding the saw fully or the tip of the blade is resting on the log (Taking the slack out of the Handel springs) Great video, inspired me to go out here soon and do a video for my channel here as well when I get better, I also had done and unboxing video but never finished that video.

I think it would need a square at the end of the saw so you could get a “true” 90 so you could get 16” if your worried about an “exact” measurement. But if you just want to get close then by all means use it!

Uniform wood can still be stacked with plenty of pieces in or out of the plane by a couple of inches... Also, MY OCD is that if I am within a couple of inches of the size I'm shooting for, and there's a decent sized knot thereabouts, I'm going to opt for bisecting that knot with my bucking cut, for ease of splitting...that's more important to me than a couple inch variance in the wood pile.

Greetings Gord, Lee here, nice gadget, looks good on paper, I'll wait to have a further opinion after I see you try it out. The first thought I had was, I junk my wood at 16 inch also, but, the way I cut an 8 foot log is not all the same, the first half I cut from left to right, then the 2nd half its right to left, so that might be a little bit of a pain, when you give it the test can you try cutting a log from right to left so I can see how well that would work? If you have it fully charged you can see it in the sun ok, but if it's not fully charged I had a hard time seeing it (and ended up stopping sooner that expected to charge it) Other than that I do find that it's good to check after every tank or 2 of gas if the laser is still accurate, also found that on my Stihl Ms 311 that it will shift just a bit with the spring system and handle design and will occasionally throw the cut off an inch (Wich as someone who sells firewood can be a bad thing at times) Other than that it's fairly good, I wouldn't say I love it but it's definitely nice, especially the fact that there made just 10min away from me!

Don’t think that would work for me. Not only can anyone who’s cut firewood for more than an hour already eye-ball the right dimension with reasonable accuracy (it’s all turning to ash eventually), but also it looks like it would be in the way of my hand, vibrate loose/misaligned and require precise “set” step each time to mark the log which I don’t want. I’m always amused by those that think having each section be exactly 16”, not 15.5” or 16.5” (the most variation I usually get) is somehow better. I just cut and stacked 4 cords today and the least of my concern was the 1” variance in length when stacking. For me, any deviation from a perfectly round log does far more to interfere with my perfect stack than the odd length interval. Since they haven’t made a massive log lathe to make perfect cylinders so my stacks are standing even, I think obsessing over the length is hilarious! I mean, does everyone just throw out the last length of the log that’s not exactly 16”?! I just keep an eye down the log and adjust the last few cuts to make it work. Waste not, want not. As I said before, it’s all tomorrow’s ashes anyway. At any rate, it’s always fun to see something new, but I think this is more hassle than it’s worth. Seems like just another thing I have to charge and another battery the environment has to deal with. Rant done! 😂 Keep up the great work, Gord!

Great rant! Well said! The difference in the shape of each chunk is going to affect the stacking much more than the +1"/-1" difference in length...ESPECIALLY since splitting a knot within the last couple of inches is more important anyway...

If the idea is perfect accuracy then it's a fail if the saw bar is on a thicker part it will have the laser follow a diaganal line at that plane so the result would be slightly different measurement same with going thinner also any change in perfect 90°would also change the measurement

I hear you about the geometry of the varying thickness of wood, but practically speaking, not too many sections of log change diameter THAT radically, within a firewood-length distance. The aspect of the perpendicularity of the saw to the log, on the other hand, is very easy to screw up, and if I really cared, it would be quite frustrating. I feel like just as easily as I could train myself to be sure the saw was exactly perpendicular, I could ALSO train myself to guage whatever length I wanted to have.

As a new subscriber here - so my vote does not count high. Also breaking my Mother's rule - if I can't say anything nice then.... I am flabbergasted at this toy. I've only cut maybe 50 full-size trees in my life but if I can't tell 16, 18 or 24 inches by eye or laying the saw across the log- I should not be cutting wood. I bet the laser is very visible at dusk or nighttime after I've been cutting all day. :) :) Cutting wood is not an art or government spec project - 15.75 - 16.25. Just get it done - all you are going to do is burn it. I also viewed the Mingo marker video - my gawd Paul Bunyan would be disappointed and laughing. These toys will be very helpful and tradeable in the coming apocalypse. Rather than toys be sure to have good shoes, hearing/eye protection, chaps....

Good morning Tim and thanks for sharing your thoughts - they count for sure. I appreciate hearing different thoughts and views from folks, especially when I am trying out new tools. And yup, my Gramma always told me the same thing. :)) Enjoy your weekend!

@@GPOutdoors Thanks back - I could have been blasted for my flip posting. I stihl could be blasted. Speaking of flip - I had NO idea that smarter people flipped the bar for even wear - Glad I did not say anything. I may do that bar flip but I am hoping I don't have to do much cutting unless we have a ice storm. I will keep watching and learning.

@@johnambro7181 - I remember when my buddy's grandfather shot at us with rock salt, back in like 1982....they sold the farm a few years later, to developers for $10 million, and retired to Florida....till this day, when I drive by that fancy development, which used to have nothing but a little rickety hillbilly shack and barn smack in the middle, people don't believe me when i tell them what used to go on out there...lost world...

Just more junk on the market. Heck when I’m cutting fire wood the saw is running all day. An that light could an would get in my way. Besides the battery only lasts for 5 hours. What I’m going to stop an wait for it to recharge? Heck no I know how to measure with the saw blade. As I move down the tree trunk. I WAS BORN AT NIGHT BUT NOT LAST NIGHT.
