Another student at the Forestry College where I earned my Scalers license asked the Instructor what is a face cord? The Instructor sat down , waited for silence and said,, face cord is only a word invented by dishonest firewood sellers to make customers satisfied with less then they paid for. He suggested that would be a good exam question . This is by far the best video out of many l have seen about firewood, thanks.

Good video. There is a lot of confusion with people. I’ve sold firewood and I’ve bought it at times too. There are way too many sellers that either don’t know or don’t care what a full cord is. The next biggest topic of confusion caused by bad or unknowing sellers would be what exactly seasoned firewood is.

Well done, your explanation was on the money. I have been cutting and splitting wood since I was 16 helping my Dad and Uncles at our hunting cabin in NYS. Then I was cutting it to heat my family home, about 4 years ago I had my hip replaced & 62 years young now it's not as easy to get fire wood anymore. So I started ordering some fire wood, it's very hard to find someone who knows what a cord of firewood is.

I’m almost 82 years old and I still drop trees buck and split them up I burn mainly oak,maple, hickory and locust. But the problem is as I have gotten this old it just takes a lot out of me. I learned early on (age 16 now 67) what a cord was. A lot of people in my area refer to 1/3 cord as a rick. Having hauled a rock I know it will fill a short box pick up. I wish more people would see this video. Great video by the way.

Many people in my area try to claim a level truck bed as a full cord, and unfortunately also price it as that. Often it will even actually be a loosely thrown in, level truck bed, claimed as a full cord!

I’ve been cutting and stacking firewood since I was 12 yr old which is about 50years. I’ve on occasion purchased firewood and have made it absolutely clear that I wanted a full cord 4’x4’x8’, 128 cubic foot and had them show up with pickup with 2’ side boards lose stack and mounded and advised them that what the brought me was not a full cord, I paid for a full cord and I expected a full cord and to prove it I stacked it with their help and sure as shit it was barely 2/3 of a cord so it it proves that there are those who are taking advantage of most people and there are those selling firewood who don’t understand what a full cord is either.

The way i could remember 128 cubic feet was there was also 128 ounces in a gallon. That part itself didn't help much but a quart of beer is 32 ounces. That part is easy to remember. One quart is 1/4 gallon. 32x4=128.

Nice to meet you, Brad. I'm new to your channel and appreciate a honest person when it comes to firewood sales. My wife and I are both 67 and cut, split and stack our own firewood, a great team. We mostly get logs that I haul home on my 5x10' trailer, pulled behind my 2001 Grand Cherokee and some rounds from our local Fire Chief that's clearing a large area of his property that has a lot of dead Ash trees. Keeps us busy and in some sort of shape and beats paying those high utility bills. Again, great to meet you and discover a great channel.

Very true there is so many people that really have no idea what a cord is, I don't deliver much people just come pick it up, and they think they can put a cord on a half ton truck, until I tell them they probably won't get it all on in 2 trips, you really have to do just as you did so they understand, Great Job !

6 cords going out will give u alot of free space for more maple ,ash, or cherry which dries very fast if u split it small

Greetings from Dorset (UK). Thanks for clearing up the cord/face cord thing. Never see 'face cords' over here. Fuelwood is often sold by weight. Bet you see the potential problem. Supposed to be sold by volume (cubic metres). Recently we have had legislation passed to say that you can't sell firewood in quantities of less than 2 CuM at higher than 20% moisture. You have to be registered and accredited which costs money and time yearly and directly penalises small producers. I don't sell wood, but I do cut and prep for my own use. I get through about 4 tonnes a year- my only heating. Small house. I don't split. I fell and cut to 5' lengths. I'm cutting derelict hazel coppice and max. stem diameter is about 10". I cut into 11-12" lengths (stoves are smaller over here) and then just cut it into billets with a chainsaw in a brake.

Yep , some are confused. A standard pickup truck, stacked evenly to the top of the bed is not a full cord. Those different adjectives confuse people. Good video.

Iike this fella and this is a great video . i wood like add to the pick up truck deal ..... 8x5x3.2= 128.so if you sell firewood in a full size pick up build some sides and a head rack and stack it 3 ft high and mound it up being higher in the center which will give you you 3.2 in the equation . firewood and power saws saved me from myself. good job on this video

Great vid👍. Here in SW Missouri I deal with the same confusion. The most common term here for a 1/3 of a cord is a “rick”. Most people call and want to order wood by the truckload and then I have to clarify things. I have also noticed that the people who heat with wood and will buy a cord or more they know exactly what they want. It’s the customers who want a rick or 2 for a fire place or a backyard fire pit that aren’t sure. And several times I have showed up to deliver a rick or two and stack it the customers are surprised by how much extra wood is there, which after an explanation of volume means they were cheated in the past. I've noticed in our area people selling "facecords" of wood which measure 4' x 8' x 12", which is 75% of a facecord. I've been sharing that information on my channel. A facecord of wood stacked loosely required approximately 60 cubic feet of space.

I live in Central Kentucky and buy my firewood from an Amish pallet mill. The wood is hickory, red oak and yellow poplar. The poplar is nice in the mix because it gets the oak and hickory going good when burning. $20 a half cord stacked as tight as you want in my 2x4x8 truck bed. So that's $40 a cord and no bark on the 4x4 or 4x6 cut off end pieces 6 in. to 24 in. long. No chainsaw cutting or splitting.

Brad your true on your words . Back in my wood days we delivered 3 full cords in a tandem dump truck patch and round off to it. We cut into 2 lenght 12” for the cook house stove and 16” for heating stove . Your very true about a pick - up take a cord off wood . It’s can be done went dry , BUT BUT you got to put high sideboard on the pick - up . My wet yellow birch a full cord might take it 1 ton or 3500 . Good luck on your axle weight on the license road . Here there highway inspection will be on to you for weight on your truck from 3500 and up , plus weight license on your trailer . Here we pay for weight to haul onto your axle . We call it’s axle weight , so went we haul max axle weight we paid for it’s to haul . A lot put minus weight on trailer about its less money , but if the highway inspection weight your load it’s will cost you $$$ in weight over your permit . Back in the wood a big timber use to take 1 1/4 tons pick back out to the landing .it’s a load with no B s..t down off a mtns . Take cord and 1/4 at 8’x 4” long put a cable around the centre, pull it’s tight up behind the jack and drive it’s straight down a mtns . See if your nerve as steel in the mtns off Newfoundland ca. Brad your right A CORD in USA and CANADA are the SAME . 8’ long , 4 ‘ height and 4’ wide . How you want to cut its up , you can pick a # 12 “ , 16” , 24 “ and so on . Brad great video, if your buddy take 10 full cords , you will make a hole into the wood yard for sure . Be careful and god bless to you and the family .

Excellent info. There’s so much confusion and misinformation on this topic. I too have heard people say that a full cord can fit in a pickup truck. I always say, “my truck is an F350 with an 8 foot bed. I can’t fit a cord in my truck.”

Of course, that was before I watched your video and found out I have been wrong for 20 years. I was sure that a face cord was 1/2 of a cord. So all these years I have been getting a cord delivered and thought the guys was being generous because after filling 2 face cord holders, I always had some extra. Ha Ha, joke was on me. I am about to order firewood and have called around to get prices here in Northern New Jersey. You mention in your video that you like the chance to educate your customers and try not to embarrass them. A face cord here in Tennessee is called a Rick or a third of a cord about 42-43 square feet

HOW TO FIND NUMBER OF CORDS IN ANY SIZE RELATIVELY SQUARE STACK OF FIREWOOD Use a calculator. 1. Measure the stack in inches. Inches Wide or Deep X Inches Tall or High X Inches Long = a big number. Example: 36 in wide X 69 in tall X 156 in long = 387,504 cu inches. 2. Now divide 387,504 by 1728, (cubic inches in a cubic foot) = 224.25. 3. Now divide 224.25 by 128, (cubic feet in a cord of wood) = 1.75 cords of firewood.

good job on explaining the difference lengths, in the suburbs of Levias Ky most suppliers have 12 16 and 24 in. the price for face cord is the same, a lot more labor in a 12 in verses 24 in. cords.

Really good explanation Brad. A lot of people don’t have a clue about what a cord is. I can’t believe you need to have a permit to sell firewood. Just another revenue stream for the government, smh. I left upstate NY and moved south 42 years ago. I was glad to get away from a lot of that government control. Unfortunately I think it’s creeping towards NC.

Around here I rarely see face cords sold. It's generally a full or a half cord. Some guys will make a box out of pallets and split and stack it neatly in the box and call it a half cord. That way the air can get at it through the gaps in the pallet and its very roughly 4x4x4 which is a half cord. Most pallets are 48x40 so the respectable guys will stack it over the top to make up for the lost 8 inches

The way I was taught was a face cord was 4'x8'x16", a full cord was 4'x8'x4' and a bush cord was wood bought in log form and it was 4'x8'x4' but it was still in log for and you would lose approximately 15% of the volume when you cut and split it. So a logging truck is the person selling bush cords. Hope that makes sense.

If you have side boards. And you stack it above cab. You can most definitely get a cord of wood in a pickup truck.

Correct me if I am wrong, (but I am not), a FULL cord of wood is a stack of UNSPLIT wood 4 feet long, 4 feet high by 8 feet long. 128 cu ft. When you split it, it now becomes more than 128 cubic feet.

When I stack my wood, I always try to go 54 inches. By time it drys down and shrinks its a little more than 48 inches. (Depends on the type of wood) I would rather give more than less.

spot on! a tigyht stack full cord is 128 cubic ft minus rot and air space which is 90 cubic ft solid wood, a loose tossed cord is 180 cubic ft. Thanks

Also by having wood staked in measured sections it takes the guess work out of knowing how much is being loaded. I have a truck that easily hold 1/3 thrown in loose. However , if i stack it tight and 2ft high i can get 60 cubic ft in my truck bed. Nice video brad.

A standard size pickup bed, slightly mounded is appx a face cord. If you really mound it, you can fit a half a cord. I like to pick up my own wood, and that's what I get when I throw a measured face cord in there. (I don't have anywhere for a vendor to dump off a load here, and rather than waste his time- and clog up the road- while we transfer the wood to MY truck, or haul it out back 1 cart at a time, it's just easier to go get it) I believe "Rick" is another term for face cord. More common in the South and parts of the midwest. Sometimes the confusion goes both ways. I ordered a face cord of mixed premium hardwood for grilling from a guy advertising green/fresh cut firewood, with a list of available species. Cherry, hickory, and sugar maple is what I asked for. He turned out to be a tree service with a nice side gig. He shows up to my house with a dump truck! One of those small ones they use to haul mulch and stuff. By the time we emptied it out, my pickup was piled 3-4 feet above the roof, and squatting hard, lol. He said that's a face cord- and charged me as such. I ended up filling TWO 1 facecord woodhaven racks! (one of which I had to order because of this, lol) So, sometimes it works out. And yes, I DO keep a sharp eye out for his ad on marketplace, lol. ( it was seriously nice quality wood- I'd gladly buy again even if I knew I would get a measured face.)

I have seen folks happy with receiving face chords as skinny as 8". I hope folks listen to what you are saying.
