In this video I take a detailed look at how to use double clutch (semi-automatic) transmissions, such as BMW's M-DCT gearbox, the VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda DSG and Porsche's PDK.
These gearboxes differ from traditional (torque converter) automatics in a number of ways, so I borrowed a friend's BMW M4 which is fitted with BMW's version - the M-DCT gearbox - to show you how to get the best from these gearboxes & how to use them in conjunction with the Roadcraft system of car control.
The car is a bit special too - it's been considerably modified & now puts out in excess of 550bhp!

Really good video Reg, however one thing that is good to know with these cars (I have a DCT M2 Comp) - When in Drive, if you come to a complete stop, with your foot on the brake it will also put it into a non creep mode partial neutral like when you first put the car into Drive.

DUAL! ;) Interesting video. I didn't realise that the BMW variants of these gearboxes doesn't have the creep function. My RenaultSport Clio 200 has an EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) gearbox. This does have creep but, unlike many, has two DRY clutches. You really must drive this in a similar way to manual, even down to applying the handbrake and selecting neutral for longer stops at junctions or traffic lights. One thing you can do with the Renault is temporarily over-ride the auto gear selection using the paddles and then after about 7-10 seconds it reverts to full auto, which can be useful for overtakes. For downhill descents though I do put the car into manual mode to select a lower gear to hold the car back, as otherwise it will revert to full auto too soon resulting in a higher gear and a speed increase. It was interesting to hear you mention brake/gear overlap, and with the smoothness of the changes these boxes produce, doing this at the very end of the braking phase when driving manually makes my little red rollerskate the closest thing to a four wheel motorcycle I have driven. I use both full auto and manual modes depending on the circumstances and types of roads I am on. Having switched to a DCT and adjusted my driving accordingly, I'll not go back to a true manual (although I have the luxury of still driving a manual as well). The question is now, will I switch to DCT on my motorcycle? Have you tried one?
@RegLocal
@RegLocal 4 жыл бұрын
Not tried DCT on a motorcycle yet - I think only Honda offer it as an option on some bikes at the moment. My bike has BMWs “gear shift assist pro” which is basically a quickshifter which allows clutchless gear changes both up & down the box. You still need the clutch to set off from stationary and I use it through from 1st to second as it occasionally misses, but overall it’s a great gearbox.

@@RegLocal I've ridden all of Honda's DCT equipped bikes. The latest incarnations are very impressive when used in sport or manual mode. Drive mode is an acquired taste as it rushes up the box way too quick in the name of economy. When these first came out on the VFR1200F many years ago I was put off DCT when a test bike tried to kill me coming out of a very wet roundabout! I was riding listening to the engine. The bike was obviously in a high gear so I applied enough throttle to overcome this, use the torque, and accelerate smoothly/briskly out of the RAB. The DCT 'decided' to change down two gears and lit up the back wheel. Click forward several years and I'm a convert. Both cars and bikes. Once you 'get' that you truly control the gearbox with the throttle, subtle use of can produce a drive/ride that many don't understand and dismiss DCT out of hand. Strange you mention the quick shifter. Loads of riders will happily crave a QS but look down on DCT, calling it an auto. Yet it does all a QS can do, but better, and more besides. Give one a go, but hide your wallet up! :)

Love the videos, having recently got back into a reasonably rapid 428i with the ZF 8 speed auto you have given me some really good reminders on good driving techniques. My question is with the manual paddles on the auto is there any advantage in lifting between changes as with he DCT? My inclination is probably not as the system probably cuts the power momentarily. I’m more interested in giving the gearbox an easy time.

Hello, what is the best way to hold the car with a double clutch transmission when going down the hill for long time? Specially to not warm the brakes a lot. Usually I select a lower gear and the engine goes to more high revs. Is this ok? Another question is how do you get a better smooth gear change when downshifting with not using the brake? Do you release the throttle completely or just a little bit? Many thanks, really great videos

My Seat DSG will change up or down to prevent damage to the engine. I do notice that if i manually select a lower gear on the paddles whilst in Auto, say 2nd for going down a hill it normally holds it, must recognise when engine breaking is happening.

@@nessuno5403 it's an interesting video but nothing I didn't know. I'd still love someone to demonstrate this on video. Stick the car in sport plus, automatic with fastest gear change. I bet it's impossible to drive unless you are on a track and you floor it all the time. Any trying to drive smoothly in first gear is in my car impossible. I need to short shift and change into manual mode. Auto is not possible because it will hold first gear to almost the redline. It's not great and pointless. I've driven Ferrari Pistas in their track settings in auto and it's perfect.

I have a Hyundai i40, so not a high performance car, that has this type of gearbox. The things I find difficult are a) hill starts; b) holding constant speed downhill; and c) when driving slowly in 2nd in auto mode when approaching a roundabout or junction, it can’t decide if the next gear should be 1 or 3. Any suggestions? Also, should you just sit in D with foot on brake when at traffic lights, or shift to N or D?
@mikeroberts
@mikeroberts 4 жыл бұрын
Here's my thoughts. Will be interesting to hear Reg's reply. I don't know your driving experience but all DCT cars require a much heightened level of finesse on the throttle pedal. Many people have got used to controlling their manual car using the clutch pedal to smooth out poor throttle control. It takes some time and practise to change driving style and needs thinking about until you have adapted. a) Drive it like a manual and use the handbrake to assist your transition from foot brake to throttle. Some cars have hill hold assist. I don't know what Hyundai have, but my Renault (when activated) is a bit like a champagne cork from a bottle on steeper hills as you apply enough throttle to overcome the brakes of the Hill Hold feature. I therefore stick to the handbrake method. b) Select manual and select a gear to hold you down the hill (just like a manual car). c) Try to be off the throttle on approach to the RAB. If you are lightly on/off the throttle on approach it will get confused. For long stops I select N and handbrake, just to turn off the brake lights as much as for mechanical sympathy ... and to give my leg a rest. Shorter stops, I just use the foot brake.

That seems like a great improvement over a manual transmission. I'm still waiting for the (imaginary) transmission that uses electric assist motors on each wheel for instant response, backfilling with power from an engine for efficiency. Maybe it's already obsolete compared to all-electric cars.
