Watching your videos strenghtens my belief that mostly anybody can drive “sportily” (think fast and furious, ‘dramatically’ might be a better word) but takes real patience and practice to acquire the skill of driving smoothly (again ‘properly’ might be a better word). Another excellent video. Thank you.

Yay. Nice one Reg. 👍 Constant throttle down changing is a technique not very often mentioned but really smooths things out. I use it on the motorcycle as well and people think you are mad when you discuss it. They so like blip changing (especially if they have a noisy pipe). I tend to use the constant throttle technique when preparing for corner entry and want to maintain speed, and use the blip method when actually slowing. For example when entering a lower speed limit. There's a lot of crossover between your car and bike videos, so worth watching both types whether you use 2 or 4 wheels (or both).

Pro Drive did a short video several years ago that showed what happened when you change gear the input revs were constant but when the gears were changed you saw the instant change in the driveshaft speed rotation. Gearbox man has a facility on his website to allow you to enter gear ratios and engine rpm. This will allow you to see the different engine speeds needed for any given speed.

I think my gear changes are pretty smooth (after plenty of practise) but I’ve never been able to master a smooth change from 1st to 2nd from a standing start, particularly when moving out onto a fast road or busy roundabout. I will certainly be trying some of this, thanks,

In these situations you’ll have revved higher than normal in 1. The clutch plate is then far too fast for the flywheel when engaging 2, and you shunt due to the engine braking. What works for me is a good positive squeeze of the gas during change up, and extra-gentle clutching.
@Hotoadle
@Hotoadle 10 ай бұрын
Quite common. You're asking the car to do 2 different things, pull out quickly and then sit at a reasonable road speed. With practice, you can engage 2nd from 1st earlier and power away, or hold revs higher when changing up within road speed limits. Reg does show these techniques.

Just thought I'd say, my copy of your book arrived today Reg. I've already read the latest edition of roadcraft. Seems driving standards have come along way. However it's not always demonstrated by emergency services on the road unfortunately.

Diesels can lurch between 1st and 2nd gear changes, a tip to smooth this out is to press clutch before coming completely off accelerator gives you a smooth change 👍

All cars nowadays artificially alter the tickover speed for gear changes. This can be good if you're lazy but bad if you want to be accurate.
@mammadtori3964

@@buggs9950 I get your point but when I say a shitbox, I mean a super cheap car that has cable controlled throttle body and garbage clutch disk and transmission which causes all kinds of funny reactions from the car whenever you change gear - or lift off the accelerator for whatever reason -.

@@mammadtori3964 I see what you mean. Thing is I like a cable throttle, hydraulic or manual steering, no ecu etc. It's direct and raw and you know where you're to with it. Generally the car will do exactly what you tell it, or at least do the same thing every time.
@nvl2691
@nvl2691 2 жыл бұрын
@@mammadtori3964 It's not about shitboxes, it's about the age of the car. Older cable throttle cars, wether a high end BMW or a low-end Mazda, do not have any form of gear changing assist whatsoever, while modern cars with electronically controlled throttle bodies do.

Does it cause any extra wear just to hold the clutch on the bite point when changing down gears? I find it is easy and smooth. You did it at 23:18, although you were slowing down.

A non-existent art here in Australia. Even rare for a truck driver to have a 'Roadranger' (crash) gearbox licence. Very difficult to get any new cars with manual transmission although "free upgrades to auto" are offered - there are no manuals! What's going to happen in the UK with new petrol and diesel cars banned from 2030? I suppose there will be some demand to keep the older manual cars going for longer.

Manual cars will disappear from the market quite soon as most cars get hybrid systems. So far as I know there are no manual hybrids.

@@markburton5170 And no new hybrids in the UK from 2035! The fleet (300+) I oversee here in Oz will be 100% electric by 2030 and we are well behind in electric vehicle sales and use.

great video :) 7 speed really forces you to remember the neutral phase. With auto-blip, is there any reason to miss out gears coming down the box? Is the any reason to avoid brake-gear overlap?
@markburton5170
@markburton5170 3 жыл бұрын
Even if you have auto rev matching there are other advantages to leaving the car in the higher gear until you have finished slowing and have chosen the gear for driving through and out of the hazard. You keep both hands on the wheel for longer and until you are going slower. You make driving simpler and avoid an unnecessary action. If you slow early enough to finish slowing before you change gear and then to finish changing gear before entering the hazard you have added a margin of safety.

@@markburton5170 I worry about making big steps down in gears... possible to grab too low a gear and kaaaboom! .. but yes - I'm practicing getting the speed right, then the gear..
@markburton5170
@markburton5170 3 жыл бұрын
@@richardbower8707 Yes I quite understand that concern. On track I would go down through the gears rather than missing out intermediate gears. On the road I don't normally change down anywhere near the rev limit of the lower gear. For example I don't often change into second above 30 mph (or 40 mph if changing down before the end of braking using H & T), in a car in which second is good for 60 mph. I have an idea what sort of revs I need for the relevant speed - which you judge using any of engine noise, amount of throttle pressure and rev counter.
@richardbower8707
@richardbower8707 3 жыл бұрын
@@markburton5170 good point.. I just checked the manual. I’d have to be doing 80+ to blow the engine by down-shifting to second (absurdly long gears in modern cars!).... maybe I just need to stop being paranoid :)
