Oh PLEASE do a lesson on gestures! I've long noticed during Spanish listening practice that gestures are a big part of what they are saying. Plus it should be a fun video.

@@LightSpeedSpanishChannel Just go to "Dreaming Spanish" to see Spanish taught using nothing but Spanish, gestures and props and drawing pictures without any English translations at all - even for beginners.

Me too. But we didn't have a choice. In high school and college it was the ONLY WAY they taught. It is the only way they STILL teach I think. "Cross-talk" is one method that is very good where two native speakers of different languages who want to learn each other's language can teach each other simply by pointing to pictures in a magazine or drawing pictures and explaining or talking about them. With Cross-talk, the idea is you listen and watch the native speaker but you answer in your native language so both of you are learning your target languages at the same time.

It means the same thing. The way they teach languages by teaching grammar is the slowest most inefficient unnatural way to learn. The best way by far is the way babies learn their native language - by watching, and listening and absorbing native speakers saying things they can understand. The call it comprehensible input but some who think they are teaching comprehensible input miss the boat by not using pictures and props to teach beginners. The grammar should be saved for those who want to become technical writers.

Comprehensible input is not for everyone because in order for it to work, you have to enjoy the process. If you enjoy grammar and tinkering with the language, finding patterns and whatnot, then I say follow that route. The best method in learning a language is the method you enjoy doing. What some people are forgetting is that there's a lot of 'comprehensible input' in these kinds of videos even though the topic is centered on grammar. An input in order to be comprehensible can be done in a lot of ways. Pictures and actions are one way. Explanations and translations are another. Which one you enjoy more should be your default in your learning process. You can cross-over to other methods from time to time. But the most important thing is that you enjoy the process. Even Luca, the polyglot guy here in youtube ( I forgot his surname), said that he uses translation method in his language acquisition. There's nothing inherently wrong with using translation and explanation as long as you don't fall in the pit of thinking that words and expressions translate word-for-word across different languages.

I find that too many videos use visuals that are often not really accurate or don't really represent perfectly what the orator is talking about. However, if you describe something fairly well, people can create that imagery in their heads very accurately. I suppose it's all about learning styles, as you say. I have lots of students who are principally auditory and aren't interested in images at all, but rather want something explained well with words. As you say, it all depends on what your style is.

@@user-sb7br1tk1r I'm not saying it is wrong. It is just slow and cumbersome and not conducive to becoming fluent or understanding native speakers. I've done it both ways. All the traditional grammar focused method got me after reaching advanced levels in college was the ability to read and write but not speak or understand what was being spoken without great difficulty and knowing ahead of time what the subject was and having memorized a lot of the vocabulary which I quickly forgot after graduating from college. What I think is a better way to learn is what Pablo Roman is doing at "Dreaming Spanish". He speaks NO ENGLISH and provides NO ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS/Subtitles. He does everything in Spanish using pictures and gestures to convey what he is saying. He says by waiting to try to speak until you've gotten proficient in understanding what is being spoken (which takes 500 to 1000 hours), you'll avoid the pronunciation errors and comprehension mistakes new learners make by trying to speak too soon. He speaks 6 languages and he says he became fluent much faster in the two he learned this way.

I know Dreaming Spanish. I've been following that channel for two years now. I love it. It provided me a lot of comprehensible input in my Spanish acquisition journey. But it did not deter me from studying grammar and learning through translation. It did not stop from learning through Gordon and Cynthia's videos and enjoying the same. Even in our first language, we did study grammar. Listening to native speakers use the their language let you learn their language on the surface. It doesn't permit you do be bold in the use of the language, or be creative enough. You have to study the language deliberately, read books, learn the intricacies and in and outs of the language to have a full grasp of the language. People have different goals in their language learning journey. Some people just want to be conversational and learn the language superficially. If that's your goal then you don't need grammar explanation. Grammar refines our use of the language. Learning through translations help us learn to translate ideas. There's a room for a combination of different approaches. Don't be naive to think that one method is enough for a more rounded approach to learning a language.
