There are currently 47 million Americans who turn to food stamps to help make ends meet. The program was just cut by $5 billion on November 1 and more cuts are expected.
November 1st marked the end of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that was passed in 2009 to temporarily expand the SNAP or food stamp program in the US following the economic recession.

Once I worked 80 hours but was paid for 40 hrs. Sometimes I went three or four days without eating. I lived upstairs and worked at of all things "A Funeral Home" I was paid $3.35 for a $3000 funeral! I took sugar packs from Mc Donalds and mixed them with water. It was a learning process for me. To say the lease. If you have never been so poor you did not have one cent. Do not be quick to judge others.

Exactly it's the same situation here In Australia we don't have food stamps but money is deposited straight into people's bank accounts & In some locations, funds are being put onto a card, Many people on social security & food stamps do work but they simply can't get enough hours to fully support themselves. Society needs to stop passing judgment on those who are In these circumstances & remember job loss, disability or Ill health does not discriminate.

Although we don't have SNAP here In Australia we still have people on welfare because they can only get part time hours at work, You can work 1 hour a week & you are still counted as being employed In the stats.

What so many people don't realize is that there are families on food stamps, either because the parent is disabled or because the parent's job is gone. There are also a lot of families who qualify for food stamps and they do work. There are a lot of elderly people on food stamps too. There's so much chatter that everyone on food stamps is lazy, alcoholic's or on drugs. I've seen hundreds of memes which show the ignorance of those who aren't on assistance. Memes that talk about how people work so that those who are on assistance can have full cabinets, that's not the case at all.

***** You do realize that if the past 2 Presidents hadn't of taken all of the jobs and sent them overseas, there wouldn't be thousands of people out of work. Easy to say go out and get a job and then get a second one, have you been job hunting in the past few years? Yes, there are some mom's who would rather be taking care of their kids because you can't trust nanny's and daycares these days to do it. Too many child molesters and child abusers out there working those caring for kids jobs.

+Carolee Kelly I don't know about all others. Elderly carried this country by paying taxes made it possible for us to go to school and we should pay them back when they need it. I'm for helping handicapped when their families can't aid them enough. People can insure their adult children until they turn 26-27 so I see no need for any child of theirs under 27 they should be getting welfare of any sort.

The so called good business model of hiring only part-timers and paying the minimal wages with limited benefits guarantee to yield more working citizens that require some sort of support to survive. Although more people have greater access to education opportunities, businesses are not willing to pay you for your work experience and education. Visit your local food pantry and observe the daily crowds; the mix of people (old and young, white, black, Hispanic, Asian etc.); what will congress do about this epidemic?

The crazy part of these budget cuts that are going to effect low income families are going to cause a ripple effect. When they cut off families from section 8 and welfare the stores who are also Snap and EBT dependent are going to suffer also because the less money they make the more people they're going to have to unemploy. I'm interested to see how this effects other small businesses like community store markets and grocery stores like Aldi and save a lot. It's going to get deep in 2018.

Damon Vinson No it will not that’s a bullshit statement, teach your daughters responsible sex by making the low live cap it before he taps it, or better yet do the correct parenting thing give them the pill, or the 5yr shot.Or have mom teach them to swallow, or better yet teach them to sustain until they meet a young man that is responsible by having a job, insurance , 401k and can provide for his spawns. These abusers of the system (the young healthy) can’t work but they can fuck and run around all day on taxpayers money, the gig is up, we the taxpayers are tired of feeding, housing lazy low life’s with no self respect or pride fuck them and anyone who doesn’t believe welfare is for short term help not a fucking career, and this goes for all felons you made your bed by not complying with the law of the land now do you want ketchup with those fries, because that’s your self worth. I know most all felons come from a so called family that was raised on welfare, and mom or dad couldn’t teach you the proper way to survive without government aid, so let’s keep paying cum dumpsters to repeat this cycle by shitting more welfare spawns out for monetary gain with no parents to teach them pride and morals seems it’s worked great the last 49 yrs. Why don't all the CEO's take pay cuts and the the rich pay their fair share in taxes. My question is what would happen if nobody bought only what they need and nothing extra. Because you have to pay attention to what your government is telling you is basically "we don't care if you can't don't have the money for necessities and we are not going to help you afford these things."

Food stamps do not bother me. They are an effective way of giving a bit of help to struggling households. Unlike other forms of offsets to the Great Recession, food stamps don't have a clock ticking. In many states, families in full time low wage work qualify for some food stamps if the household includes children. Hence food stamps can be a form of child allowance. Food stamps cost 31 / 73 / 69 billion in 2007 / 2011 / 2014. That's not a crisis. In those years, unemployment benefits ran 33 / 108 / 36 billion. I suspect that a lot of people apply for food stamps only when their other resources run out. The cost of unemployment is going down, because millions have exhausted their benefits. Food stamps (and Disability) are America's long term unemployment benefit.

I worked since high school. Been laid off too many times. Always to work on time, seldom took any sick days, got promotions. Yet here I am at age 64 on disability, have no home, no car, rent a room and work 24/7 as a caretaker. Get SNAP food. My food is from dollar stores. I don't smoke, no alcohol, don't go ti restaurants, get all my clothes from 2nd hand stores, no cable tv, no children, never married, health still declining and now I can't go to my rhuemalotogist next month because no longer accepting state asisstance in treatments. I always worked, still do and theres only one retirement plan for me. Death. I have neuropathy, fibromyalgia, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, herniated dics, raynauds, lots of bone spurs. Working hard for decades and look what it got me. No pension, no retirement and most those physical troubles from working hard. I work 24/7 at 400/week. Others doing it for a real employer get 845/ 5 days and 8 hrs. I work 7 days for less than that. Because of my situation I'm taken advantaged of. And this senior has a family with a great income and have her getting free food delivered!! Thats my existence- babysitting a senior because the family can't be bothered so they can spend lots yet skimp on this granny. There's your greedy people with great income yet have their parent living on welfare so they have more money to spend on themselves and having me here- like a prisoner- because I have no days off, little time for myself. Ywt I'm going to be critized as lazy and to get a job!? I could be where I am now without all those decades of hard work. As for gardening- nit in my condition and this is a cold climate. Not my home so I have NO permission to grow food on this property. See, the neighbors here want a certain look for the neighborhood and to conform. Very snobbish, fussy people here. Then how many of you see few checkout lanes open in stores? How many immigrants do you see operating minimarts? Driving cabs? When in younger days all checkout lines be open, all stores run by those born here. Everytime I go out I feel as if I'm in a foreign country. Ywr some "A" holes say get a job. How about aiming that attitude at big buisness? Or have you forgot about how they are screwing over everyone? Or is it just easier to kick at those already down?

I grew up poor and ate the Gov. cheese once per month and lived in a old coal miners row house that was 1 to 2 inches out of plum and use to wear cheap clothes and shoes and we were happy as a family. my mom and Dad both worked low end jobs so I know what it's like but on the other hand is this also Many not all leach of the system due to laziness these days, I call it like I see it, it's the truth. People have no shame anymore like it was when I was growing up. I pulled myself out of being poor by myself with NO help. I used to work 6 days a week and earn $150 dollars a week after taxes, making 3,50 per hour that was minimum wage back then people. I put myself through Community college by my own money no free handouts for me, I drove an old car that was handed down several times when I got it. I was willing to move from my comfort zone also which I did because my area was very depressed for work. I had saved a little money and a suitcase and drove out of state with an old car to where an area was more jobs and got a job. Hey I'm not saying it was easy no it was not it was very hard I sleep on a floor almost a year before I could buy a bed so don't tell me People. I say this tenderly without any malice because everyone situation is different. It can be done, I'm proof of it. I grew up when hard work meant something unlike now where most want the easy way out. 50 million people living on the system is crazy!! sooner or later good old Uncle Sam will not be able to fund these programs for this large amount of people because it cost to much and some people make it a way of life when its not made for that so someone has to have some Balls and start making effective changes to the system before it implodes on itself. It's NOT the Gov. JOB to take care of you for life start taking responsibility for yourself. I always say what did people ever do before all these FREE programs ever came about because there was a time these did NOT exist.

Maybe they're buying that as a treat to celebrate a birthday, new job, or some other special occasion. Maybe it's marked down significantly because it's a day before the sell by date. Or maybe, it's none of your effing business! I'm not on food stamps (I actually make $200 a month over the limit as a single adult without dependents here in Virginia), but I am low income and I know how to stretch my food dollars- Monday's are the best times to go shopping because they're marking down stuff (including meat) that didn't sell over the weekend and is close to expiring ; I've gotten ground turkey that normally retails $3.50 for a 16 oz. package for $1.77 and I can make several meals out of just two or three packages. I've also gotten chuck steak to make beef stew that way because it's cheaper to buy it as a chunk when it's marked down and cut it up yourself at home than it is to buy pre cut stew meat and I've even seen prime rib and London Broil marked down significantly (and I would've stocked up myself if I had room in my freezer at the time), so I'd be like "Damn these people really know how to shop the sales better than I do!".

They open the items and wait for them to go bad before disposing of it. I have asked for food to give to the food pantry and give to homeless knowing after the dates most food is still edible. Yet they are bound by the rules and cannot. It’s sad the way our world disposed of so much knowing it would literally feed all of the homeless and probably ally of the ppl needing items in food banks and food kitchens. Last week we threw away 36 cartons of eggs. It was heart breaking. I just don’t understand the lack of compassion. This is why I don’t manage places anymore. Most of us would not let someone starve. But those of us from working household, the ones who live within their means and are careful not to have more children than we can afford, are tired of supporting these other people who think it's a free ride and abuse it. It's 'free' food for them, but costs the rest of us. Every dollar that goes to folks who won't care for themselves takes away from someone trying to take care of their own. I am in support of having systems to help those who cannot help themselves, but I am against our current system, which is often abused. In my state, it is legal to buy cigarettes with benefits! That's not right, not right at all, and people who abuse the system like that should be ashamed.

Lisa, no one 'forced' you to be or do anything. So, according to you, you're homeless and starving but don't qualify for benefits, yet here you are, on the internet, replying to things frequently? I don't buy it, your claims don't add up. No one is keeping your from anything but yourself. You want something, go earn it. Services are there for the poor, but if you don't qualify, there's obviously something else going on that you don't wish to disclose. That's fine, it's your business, but stop pretending that America, as a whole, is responsible for your position in life. It's up to you to change it, and services are there and available for people in the position you keep insisting you're in. If you were homeless, you would qualify for certain benefits. Same thing if you were starving. And it doesn't even have to be government assistance- many private entities offer help as well (shelters and food banks). So you can save the boo-hoo, poor me spiel for folks who have any pity for those who won't help themselves. You won't find it with me.

I suggested in another thread that you look up Dave Ramsey. Did you? No, I'm sure not. That would require effort on your part, and you prefer to call people names and place the blame anywhere but on yourself. I answered you quite kindly elsewhere on here and gave you good info to get you pointed in the right direction to better your situation. But it's clear you prefer to wallow and whine. So be it, it's your hide. Nothing else I can do for you, you're too busy throwing yourself a pity-party to find your way up. No one can help you when you won't help yourself, and it's clear you're angry no one will just hand things to you. Your level of feeling on entitlement is mind-boggling.

A lot of people abused the welfare system in the 70's. They were having kids to get more benefits from the government. Then the government started paying their their rent. Then Obama let immigrants (they like big families) come into the country gave them free healthcare (Obamacare) plus all the other goodies, so it became a chain reaction. The government is not suppose to feed your family and kids long term. True Americans believe in working for a living and use free handouts when they are in need. Not enough working tax paying people to take care of all these kids and the growing older population. The young can work and companies do not want to hire old people.

My mom works at a 8-6 job and makes minimum wage at a car dealership. Don’t judge others on their looks or backgrounds. One time it was my brothers birthday and he wanted to go out to eat but my single mom couldn’t afford to. So we went to a hyvee and bought lobster. The type of food people on foodstamps by makes no difference to the issue at hand about a system of dependancy-financially in the United States in general.. Every State recieves a certain amount to be distributed to applicants in need of assistance and each State has different policies and they do have to obide by different federal guidelines as far as income guidelines based off of the federal poverty level..but each State handles their public assistance depending on the State,it just depends...BUT..regaurdless of all of the negative stereotypes and misleading assumptions-MOST people who recieve public assistance DO work..There are strict policies regaurding a persons eligibility and employment is one...Of course yes there ARE alot of lazy people who don't work and sit around and live off the government and abuse the welfare system..but most of those people are commiting fraud by lyeing on their applications etc...There is a gateway to work program attatched to every public assistance program-it varies depending on the State but It's amazing to me how soo many people can judge people because they just go by what they keep hearing over n over n over again about a negative view on the welfare system and people who recieve them-So many people say things like, "I'm sick of working so people on welfare can sit and get free money while I'm working,etc"...and things like what you just said about limiting the TYPEs of food a person can recieve..And again..Coming from a person who has A-been born into poverty and relied on public assistance growing up as a child although my dad was a very hard working single father-and B-I used to work at the Division of Family Resources/(public assistance office)...believe me when i say that the main thought that comes to mind about welfare recipients is a negative, misleading, judgemental stereotype about ALMOST HALF OF ALL AMERICANS..I've seen everything from young college students who were working their way through school and maintaining a home and the cost of tuition and books supplies even after financial aid (if) leaves them applying for public assistance....to mothers(fathers too) of children who got sick and diagnosed unexpectedly with a serious/terminal illness and had to wipe out their savings and basically lost soo much n were again left to apply for medicaid and foodstamps..some families got sick children and require a parent to quit their job to become fulltime caregivers...same for people who have parents they have to be caregivers for etc and people who are suffering disabilities from physical to severe mental illnesses and are unable to work a regular job and applying for disability has become very hard and most people get denied..etc...people who have spouses deployed to fight for our Country...contrary to popular belief soldiers and other military are not rich..the pay is no where near what most people assume it is..unfortunatly..and couples who are/were married for years having a male breadwinner and a homemaker wife(which was originally what welfare was MEANT to support anyway)-mothers who became single or who one or both had got laid off...also take into concideration that a person can work 40hours a week-making minimum wages and recieves under 300a week depending on taxes/deductions...and people(MANY)..actually worked well over 40hours and the overtime barely makes a difference because their taxes increase if wages increase..also most employers offer a less than affordable Insurance IF they offer any..and when the economy is bad it's not just a topic for discussion..It's real life and it affects real people everyday...If i had a dollar for everytime i seen someone walk in to apply for assistance and could barely make eye contact with me and the look of shame and embarassment and eyes filled with tears an it's very sad that ANY person who is in need and is NOT a crook or a person whos just wanting free money-should never be made to feel ashamed of anything...and whats REALLY amazing is when people who are actually concidered below the federal poverty level that have minimum wage paying jobs like a cashier at a gas station(ive heard more than one make a comment about someone using ebt n making remarks like "some of us have to work so people can live off foodstamps with my tax dollars"...or a fastfood and grocery store employees i've heard on more than one occasion make a similar remark"I wish they would let people on welfare work for a day and have to pay taxes so other people can live off the system..or "People on welfare/foodstamps should have to drugtest since i have to work to pay for them!"-...really saddens me to hear how people are truely mistaken when they continue the negative flow/stigma around people who need assistance which is WHY sooo many applicants are ashamed..and to now tell them what KIND of food they're "allowed" to buy?...First of all again there are millons of people who recieve foodstamps and or medicaid/Hip and DO work..probably more than the people judging them..And if a person works as a fastfood worker,cashier,etc..making minimum wage..and they file taxes at the end of the year and fall into a certain tax bracket and get TAX REFUNDS back like MOST do..not even counting having children and recieving the child tax credit..and are not only NOT contributing to government assistance at all but ALOT of the time can claim certain tax exemptions that enables them to GET back more money from the Government than they actually paid through payroll deductions..and of course there are different situations and alot of factors come into play but generally speaking but people are different and some people have also gained custody of one or more child when a family member dies..or some couples lose a spouse either to death or divorce, seperation etc..people get laid off everyday n the numbers are growing..My sister has 4 kids and now is getting Government Assistance untill she geta financially stable...She has always worked at LEAST one job and has been with her childs father for almost 11 years and they built a life based on two incomes including house/car/basic living expenses-gas for the car and gas for home/electric/water/sewege/Car Insurance/Health Insurance and she had worked n went to college a few years ago but it didnt pay off like she thought and the cost of living in general is growing quick-and is now headed for a divorce and its easy for people to say things like "people who have kids and are on welfare shouldnt have kids if they cant support them"-and again..an ignorant assumption that women who fraud the system n have multiple children by multiple men n never work etc-that theyre the majority and what comes to mind when you see a woman with kids using EBT benifits-my sister has been with their father since THEY were kids...hes the only man shes ever even been with and has always worked her ass off..and going through a divorce is like splitting everything you have but still having the same expenses just half of the income now-so shes rearranging her life and was very upset and embarassed and ashamed it seemed to need some help...and to imagine a store clerk judging her like I'm sure many do all EBT cardholders and thinking they have some sort of right to decide WHAT people can eat is ironic and ridiculous because alot of people on benefits have probably paid double the amount of taxes that the people judging them have..You never know what a persons situation is..and for a person who is working a job that barely requires a GED and is not very physically demanding and that falls into a certain tax bracket as I said that actually entitles them to tax REFUNDS ..can so quickly judge a person on foodstamps like theyre somehow superior to them just adding to the stigma..It's a shame..not to mention millions of people/kids with food allergies and limited diets/diabetics/parents of kids with eating disorders-anorexia..but most importantly Public assistance is meant to assist the public as it reads...I have worked my ass off my entire life and had HARD jobs that physically, mentally, emotionally drain me..just like my sister has..and through the years shes already paid more than her fairshare of taxes and I mean shes ACTUALLY contributed when they were married..they bought their own house and took care of my neices n nephews on their own n never asked for anything from anyone..and shes had her world turned upside down n is now preparing for life as a divorced single mother and she got the house so she gets all the bills on her own too..and public assistance was designed specifically for a situation like hers.. and she needs help while shes getting stable single now an shes like millions of other people who are just asking for the help that they PAID for to be there over the years so she can buy a steak and feed it to her dog if she wants..not really but it's just the point..this negative outlook has really got to get better..I really hope morr people will do research before making assumptions based of what theyve heard..

+MizzGreer I think it does. Let me explain. If they spend x amount on pricey items, instead of stretching it to buy basics, they're not going to get very far with it. If they stop buying junk food, but real food staples, they wouldn't have to need to go to soup kitchens and food banks to get real food. It's my simplistic understanding for this issue. It's all about spending wisely. If you can't use food stamp to buy diapers (as per another video I watched), it doesn't make sense to be able to buy luxuries like crab legs and junk food.

more like 70 million when you include illegal immigrants. A single family of four receives more in aid in a single year than the average single worker makes in wages. Rent food clothing utilitys and cash money for household items. It's became a way of life for generation to generation of familys. When people make more money to have kids and not work.. That's a problem. By the time their done having kids and lived off the system for fifty years. Then they apply for social security that they never paid one dime into. That's a problem.

Also if you keep having children when you are in this situation you are a selfish human being plain and simple because nobody has the right to bring a child into that situation. This really sucks - let's cut all our food Stamps -kick everyone off that needs them while I am hearing we are running out of funds wow! That is a load of shit I tell you Especially when all of a sudden there is a new crisses at our boarders with kids and those invaders needing help -all of a sudden there is all kinds of funding -food-snacks and funding for them! We got to support them -train them-give them jobs-and there families a place to stay We are screwed why are we having. Food Stamps -homeless issues? Not enough funding? I don't think so!

Pisses me off when I see shoppers using that gold card and buying crap. I'm on a budget and am very careful about my food purchases, and then I see someone getting assistance who buys ice cream, soda and cupcakes.

purewonka with an ebt card i buy ice cream and soda but i go for items on sale and use manufacturer's coupons because at ralph's the first dollar can be doubled combined with store coupons found in the local paper, oftentimes go for day old bakery items as they are cheaper

Guy in front of me at sunoco today bought chips a butterfinger and a coke with his ebt then pulls out two dollars for a shot of fireball whiskey. Then got in his escalade and drove off. literally didn't know what to say when the teller asked me how i was, I told him about how when i was broke and hungry in college i applied for food stamps and they offered me 10 dollars a month. I said keep it. also for the record i drive a 15 year old beat up focus and work my life away to pay for my roof with 0 aid. how is it this guy gets to drive an escalade and eat junk food that the rest of us paid for?

It's time for the children to learn how to eat differently now they eat at school during the weekday and learn how to fast on the weekend no one teaches our children...... And or and also with taking food stamps away it's time because a lot of people will go into our grocery stores or even our restaurants and try to act like something they're not when they're actually on food stamps they are not like us Joneses.... Welfare and food stamps need to be gone...

People not wanting to raise Min. Wage I don't understand. Make companies pay people liveable wages so people don't have to be on food stamps and your taxes wont have to pay for it. But I suppose rich people don't really pay taxes so they don't care but they do have to pay wages so that's the part they will fight against. If the Republican middle class wants to help themselves work together, instead of having the mindset of a millionaire.

If you grew up on welfare they allow you to continue the cycle. However, if you work youre entire life and fall on hard times, you will get denied. If you get approved you will have to pay it back and look for work. Yet the lifers dont have to do anything.
